ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 1Basic GripsTeacher’s GoalsPupil’s GoalsThe purpose of this lesson is to introduce the:By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to: sport of badminton; describe what badminton is like; backhand “thumb” grip and forehand “v” grip; demonstrate two grips used in badminton; importance of reach. demonstrate a relaxed reach when striking the shuttle(or soft ball / balloon).EquipmentTeaching Situation / Context Balloons – at least one for each pupil. Preferably the lesson should be taken inside – but it is possible to take outside– you will possibly need to use shuttles / bean bags instead of balloons or putless air in the balloons. No nets are required for this lesson. Rackets – one for each pair (one each if possible). Shuttles – one per child. DVD player if possible.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 1: Basic GripsPhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Introduction(10 min)Pupils observe: Pupils are asked to describethe sport, supported byquestioning from teacher –example responses – over anet, volleying, hit hard and soft, changes of direction, jump, fast, smash. Open questions –example – “can youdescribe what the sportof badminton is like? Closed questions: a live badminton match or avideo clip of badminton; singles and doubles.Safety If observing a live match, make sure the group is a safedistance from the court. Is badminton a fast game? How many doublesdisciplines are there? Do players change theshuttle in a match? or teacher simplydescribes the maincharacteristics.Balloon tap(5 min)L1 – V1 Every second pupil is given aballoon. They must run in pairs“tapping” the balloon withtheir hands to avoid the balloontouching the floor. Progression – each pupil hasa partner and they must movetrying to tap the balloon withtheir racket hand only. Blow up the balloons beforethe session. Vary the distance between thepartners, according to level. Change directions usingchasses if appropriate. Begin with walking pace. Keep pairs well spaced apart. Begin exercise only when theteacher blows the whistle /gives signal.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 1: Basic GripsPhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Balloon taprelay game(10 min) Pupils work in teams (up tosix pupils in a team). Line upat one end of the hall. Eachteam is given a balloon. Eachpupil in the team must rundown the hall and back tappingthe balloon with their handsto prevent the balloon fromtouching the floor – and passesthe balloon to the next personin the team. Pupils need to find the rightfeeling for controlling theballoon instead of just trying tohit it hard. L1 – V2 The distance of the course mayvary (suggest 20 metres).Safety If pupils can do thisexercise well, they couldtry this game using aracket (only one racketper team). Progression – complete thesame exercise using rackets.Backhandthumb gripwith balloon(10 min)L1 – V3Forehand –basic (“V”)grip withballoon(10 min)L1 – V4 Teacher demonstrates thethumb grip. Working with a balloon and aracket, children asked to keepballoon up in the air with backof hand leading and moving upand away from the body. Teacher demonstrates the basic(“V”) grip. Working with a balloon anda racket, children asked tokeep balloon up in the air withbasic grip. Emphasise thumb grip. Encourage creativeroutine – example –standing, on one knee, both knees, sitting, lyingdown getting back up. Use very short grip(“T” piece of racket). As above As above Back of hand leading andmoving up and away fromthe body. Do not need to use nets. Fingers are well spread. Hit the balloon in front of body. Check there is a V shapebetween thumb and forefinger. Do not need to use nets. Keep group well spaced apart. Keep group well spaced apart.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 1: Basic GripsPhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Grip changewith balloon(10 min) Teacher demonstrates thechange between the grips. Change from 3-3 to 2-2 andthen to alternate changebetween the two grips. If executing shots wellmake it into competitivegame and countsuccessful shots. Progressto alternate forehand andbackhand. Reinforce correcttechnique. Use questioning to checkachievement of lessongoals. Teacher explains anddemonstrates onceagain to reinforce mainteaching points.L1 – V5Summary /cool down(5 min) Working with a balloon and aracket children asked to keepballoon in the air three timeswith thumb grip and then threetimes with basic grip. Pupils stretch out fully on thefloor and discuss lesson. Teacher reviews main pointsof lesson. Hand moves towards the shuttle. Do not need to use nets. Badminton is a “volleying”game over a net with hard andsoft shots, changes of direction, jumps and fast movements etc. Backhand and forehand grip(demonstrate again). Hit with elbow away from thebody and move the racketactively towards the shuttle.Safety Recommend use of balloons orsponge balls – safety issues.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 2Grip Changes and FootworkTeacher’s GoalsPupil’s GoalsThe purpose of this lesson is to:By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to: introduce the use of chasse steps as a method of moving; demonstrate the use of chasse steps over short distances; develop grip changing skills. show the use of alternative grips in a predictable situation.EquipmentTeaching Situation / Context Bean bags Preferably the lesson should be taken inside – but it is possible to deliverthis outside. Shuttles Rackets

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 2: Grip Changes and FootworkPhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsIntroduction(5 min)Teacher explains anddemonstrates:Maintain straight body position(knees slightly bent / flexed) withhead staying at the same height. chasse steps – “one foot chasesthe other but never quitecatches up“;Variations ( Harder, Easier) Execute chasse stepsdiagonal (forward andbackward) movement(varied pace). Start with walking paceand slowly build upparallel movement only. Chasseing parallel, diagonal (forward andbackward) movement. feet don’t have to be parallel toeach other for a chasse; Safety Maintain safe distance betweenchildren when moving acrossthe floor. the use of chasse steps forparallel, diagonal (forward andbackward) movements.Mirror chase(10 min)L2 – V1Mirrorchase withthrowing(game)(10 min)L2 – V2 Keep the group wellspaced apart. Pupils are divided into pairsfacing each other. One pupil isthe “leader” and the other oneis the “chaser”. Using chassesteps, the “leader” moveslaterally and changes directionstrying to escape from the“chaser”. The “chaser” mustfollow and try to keep up withthe “leader”. Use only short distances tochasse (avoid over-chasseing) Encourage straight posturewith knees slightly flexed. Chasseing only onparallel line. Pupils remain in pairs facingeach other. One pupil holdsa bean bag (or shuttle) and isthe “leader”.The “chaser” mustfollow. The “leader” throwsthe bean bag and the “chaser”tries to catch it and return it. Change roles and partners onteacher’s signal. Throwing with “racketarm” only. Keep the pairs of pupils wellspaced apart. Throw with two hands. Allocate partners in terms ofskill level / ability. Change roles often (30-40 sec). Approximately 3 metresbetween partners. Allocate partners in terms ofskill level / ability.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 2: Grip Changes and FootworkPhase / TimeActivityGrip changeTic-Toc(5 min) Remind pupils of the twogrips used in badminton.Demonstrate change of grip byrolling racket grip with a thumb.L2 – V3Grip changewith shuttle(10 min)L2 – V4 Ask all pupils to shadow changeof grips on signal. For this theteacher gives signal like theTic-Toc of a clock. Pupils work in pairs practicingchanging grips by hitting ashuttle thrown by their partneralternately to forehand andbackhand sides.Main Teaching Points Change of grip by rolling theracket grip with the thumbwithout turning the whole hand.Variations ( Harder, Easier) Elbow in front of body. Teacher varies thedifficulty by change ofrhythm or change ofsequence. Relaxed grip, squeeze fingersonly when hitting. Alternate grips andreinforce teachingpoints. Throw underarm with “racketarm” only. Use racket leg to stepforward. Concentrate on correctgrip and relaxed fingers. Make the gamecompetitive and givepoints for hitting targets. Keep slow throwing pace. Use questioning tocheck learning. Teacher explains –group is listening. Alternate forehand/backhand(no change of direction). Safety Keep pupils well spaced apart. Practice in rows facing teacher. Keep pairs well spaced apartand use the whole spaceavailable. Practice 12 shots andchange roles. Practice without using net.Hitting withchange ofgrips(15 min)L2 – V5Summary /cool down(5 min) This is a progression. Work in pairs and practicehitting targets using change ofgrips hitting a shuttle thrown bypartner (with or without net). Stretching on the floor andteacher repeats key teachingpoints in lesson 2 (see above). Use hoops or draw targets onthe wall. Change partners.Teacher demonstrates againthe use of correct grip and thecorrect movement on court. Make sure the shuttlesare collected safely aftereach game. Show correct stretchingtechniques.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 3Net and LungeTeacher’s GoalsPupil’s GoalsThe purpose of this lesson is to introduce:By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to: net play and lunge; demonstrate a lunge with good range and the front foot pointing to theimpact point of the shuttle; lunging stability and balance. consistently strike net shots using a pushing action and appropriate grip.EquipmentTeaching Situation / Context Rackets Preferably the lesson should be taken inside – but it is possible to deliver thisoutside. You will need nets (or substitute) for this lesson. Shuttles Badminton nets (or substitute)

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 3: Net and LungePhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Introduction(5 min)Teacher explains anddemonstrates: Lift the knee before kicking thefoot forward. Ask pupils what is lungeand demonstrate this. Lunge – large step forward withthe “racket foot”. First contact on the floor is withthe heel. Teacher demonstratesand explains only. Backhand and forehand net shot. For the net shot demonstraterelaxed appropriate grip. Throw the shuttle slightlyto the right or left or workwith two shuttles (throwat the same time). Use a balloon or spongeball for throwing. Changelegs more frequently. Increase stride length. Walk with shuttle onthe head. Backhand and forehand netshot with lunge.Safety Keep group a safe distancefrom teacher whendemonstrating. Straight body position withstretched “racket arm”.Balanceand throw(10 min)L3 – V1Balancingshuttles(5 min)L3 – V2 Pupils work in pairs facing eachother standing on one leg. Theyhave to maintain balance whilstthrowing and catching a shuttleto each other. Pupils balance an upturnedshuttle on their heads whilstwalking forward using a basiclunge technique (see teachingpoints). Can be performed withracket leg only or alternate legs. Repeat exercise on theother leg. Lift the knee before kicking thefoot forward. First contact on the floor is withthe heel. Maintain upright posture. Be aware of shuttles onthe floor.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 3: Net and LungePhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Havinga lunge(shadow)(5 min) Pupils stand in line and makea step with racket ending withthe “racket foot” in front ofthem finishing with shadowingnet shot. The whole group movestogether when signal is givenby the teacher. Chasse to lunge position. One step only andthen lunge. Use targets and turninto a competition tomotivate pupils. Lower the net for youngerpupils or remove the netcompletely to work ontechnique only. Can be played in largerarea to include lunging.Turn into competition tomotivate pupils. Use a smaller area toconcentrate on the rackettechnique and lower thenet where necessary.L3 – V3 Common mistake is twistingthe foot. If available use mirror toreinforce technical pointsIntroductionnet shotsbackhandand forehand(20 min)L3 – V4 Pupils work in pairs. One pupilthrows the shuttle up and overthe net. Their partner practicesbackhand net shot. Progress the exercise bylunging forward with the racketfoot when playing the shot. The shot is a gentle pushover the net. Swap roles after 12 shuttleseach. Hold racket out in front of thebody.L3 – V5 Two pupils practice net shots byplaying a game in the net area. Play net shots only (from belownet height). Start the rally by throwingthe shuttle. Space the group well in two orthree lines facing the teacher When working with “multishuttles” watch out for shuttleslying on the floor. Contact with shuttle close tothe top of the net. Check grip. Repeat exercise onforehand side.Playing anet rally(10 min)Safety Relaxed grip. Check appropriate grip isbeing used. Pay attention to court safety.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 3: Net and LungePhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Summary /cool down(5 min) Group stretches on the floor. Arm movement before legmovement. Use questioning to seeif goals of lesson areachieved. Teacher summarises andrepeats the key points ofthe lesson. Teacher repeats the mainteaching points of lessons2 and 3. Teacher demonstrates onceagain the backhand net shot andemphasises the importance ofgood lunge to support the shot. Stretch to hit the shuttle in frontof the body. Appropriate relaxed grip.Safety Emphasise proper stretchingtechnique.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 4: Net and StartingPhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Introduction(5 min)Teacher explains the mainteaching points of lesson 4: Split step – fast sidewaysmovement bringing one footparallel to the other. Question pupils onhow to start quickly andchange direction. Teacher explains anddemonstrates. Increase distanceof jumps. Reduce distance andchange legs moreregularly. Use 2 different signalsto indicate differentdirections(e.g. Clap and whistle). Make a split step to movetowards the shuttle. Strike forehand and backhandnet shots using pushing action, split step and lunge.Balanceexercise(10 min)L4 – V1 Pupils are standing on one legand jump forward sideward, backward, sideward andforward again to train jumpingon one leg. Low gravity body position (startsand change direction quickly). Pupils concentrate on balanceand control of movement. Progress is a game where theteacher shouts a direction(North, South, East or West))and pupils hop in that direction, balance and hop back tostarting position.Happy feet(10 min)L4 – V2Start with fast feet: Work in groups face away fromteacher or helper. Pupils move’on the spot’ – “happy feet”. Teacher gives signal (clap, stamp or whistle) pupils startand move as quickly as possiblein selected direction (e.g.forehand net corner). Make sure pupils cannot seethe signal. Flexed legs starting position. Safety Keep group a safe distancefrom the demonstration. Keep the groupwell-spaced apart. Keep the groupwell-spaced apart.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 4: Net and StartingPhase / TimeActivityMain Teaching PointsVariations ( Harder, Easier)Chasse stepsfor net play(20 min) Work in pairs – line the pairsup facing each other – about3 metres apart.Use the following progression(does not need a net): Use a net and place/drawtarget on the floor. No net or court required.Concentrate on correcttechnique. Allow pupils to play onlarger area and usingboth forehand andbackhand net shots (splitstep, chasse and lunge). Concentrate on thecorrect technique (nocompetitive situation). Use questioning to check iflesson goals are achieved. Teacher reinforces keyteaching points.L4 – V3 One partner throws the shuttle;the other partner is practisingforehand and backhand netshots. Change roles after 12 shots each. Start with backhand, thenforehand, then progress byalternating between forehandand backhand net shots.Playing anet rally(10 min)L4 – V4 Two pupils practice net shots byplaying a game in a small areanear the net. Play net shots only(from below net height). Play net shots with lunge. Play net shots with chasseand lunge. Play net shots with split step, chasse and lunge. Relaxed grip. Start on smaller area andincrease difficulty gradually onlarger area. Count the points to see whothe ‘winner’ of the game is. Teacher repeats the mainteaching points of the lesson(see above). The group is stretching on thefloor while listening. Keep pupils well-spaced apart. Play net shots only. Start the rally by throwingthe shuttle.Summary /cool down(5 min)Safety See main teaching pointsabove. General court safety. Correct stretching technique.

Teacher demonstrates –group is watching andlistening. Progress the game byselecting more than onechaser. Keep only one chaser tomaintain steady pace. Badminton in general is:running and hitting; starting andstopping; hitting hard and soft.Tagginggame(10 min)L5 – V1 One pupil is chosen to be the‘chaser’ and must try to’ tag’or touch all the other players. If a pupil is ‘tagged’ by thechaser, they must completetwo laps around the outsideof the playing area beforethey can re-join the game. Thegame is over if the chaser haseverybody running around theoutside of the playing area andnobody left in the playing area. Change the chaser often togive more pupils the chance tobe the chaser. When tagged, give otheractivities before pupils canre-join the game (10 lunges; 10sit-ups or active stretching).Safety Keep group well spaced apartduring demonstration. If the class is too big, separateinto more than one group anduse the whole available spaceto spread the group apart.

ShuttlETimeSchools Badminton LESSON PLANS – 10 STARTER LESSONSLesson 5: Revision GamesPhase / TimeActivityChassegame(10 min) Pupils work in pairs facingeach other. One pupil holdsbean bag (or shuttle) and is the“leader”. The other one is the“chaser” and must follow.
