So what do you getwhen a mistake turns into aworld-widephenomenon?The answer is Zumba ! In themid-90’s, Columbia native andfitness instructor, Beto Perez, forgot his traditional aerobicmusic one day and improvisedclass with a dance-like routineto salsa and merengue music. The participants, gleaming withsmiles, loved the class, and that“Happy Accident” became realityin 2001.Perez created the trademark,Zumba , and started with DVD’sand infomercials. As demandincreased, the Zumba Academyarose in 2005 to certify andlicense Zumba instructors toteach classes at fitness facilities. In addition, Zumba launchedthe vibrant and chic Zumba wearfitness clothing and accessoriesto dance fitness lovers, and in2007 Zumba went international. In 2008, the company alsolaunched the top-selling homeDVD, Zumba Fitness TotalPage 8 www.NWFitnessMag.comZumba offers various Zumba classes to include: Zumba Fitness,Zumba Toning,Zumba Gold, Zumbatomic ,Aqua Zumba , Zumba in theCircuit, Zumba Gold-Toningand Zumba Sentao. Today,Zumba is more than a workout,it is a global lifestyle brand thatZumba enthusiasts crave. One of Zumba ’s mantra’s,“Ditch the Workout, Join theParty”, continuously provesthe reputation of its’ brandwith fitness studios filled withsparkling smiles, neon coloredclothingandear-piercing“Woooohs” heard throughoutthe class. Most facilities at minimum offerthe original Zumba Fitnessclass, which seems to be the mostpopular class. The classic Zumba session is a cardiovascular “fitnessparty” where dance and aerobicmovements are choreographedto world-beat music. Zumba ’sclaim to motivation is thanks tothe all-inspiring, global musicutilized to keep hips shaking andhands waving.Zumba is not a one-size-fitsall workout. They welcome allfitness levels and walks of lifeto join the fun. However, unlikeother popular, choreographedclasses such as Body Pump orTurboKick, no one Zumba classis identical.Zumba isaninstructordependentworkout, whicheveryinstructorbrings a differentenergy and style tothe class. Instructor’smay come from anaerobic, fitness or dancebackground which createsvariety in choreography andability, or lack thereof, to movehips like the Brazilians’. If youenjoy the same thing every time,it is recommended to find aninstructor and follow his or herclass to learn the choreographyin rounds or series. Whenskipping from class to class atvarious facilities itis challenging tounderstand themoves, as everyi n s t r u c t o r ’s“round” varies. On the other hand, that maybe a benefitfor those who believe,“Variety is the spice of life.”There are thousands of certifiedZumba instructors and classesheld nationwide. To find aclub or instructor located nearyou, visit the www.zumba.comwebsite to explore your options. One local Seattle studio,Community Fitness, is one of thepremier hot spots for Zumba .Offering many classes each week.Community Fitness is focusedon providing the best Zumba classes and community in theregion.www.NWFitnessMag.com Page 9

NorthWest Fitness MagazineThe hiring of new instructors isselective on skill and personality.“Our entire Zumba staff haveextensive dance backgrounds.Whether it is classical dancetraining, dancing in theirbirth country or even cheeringprofessional basketball teams. They all bring a different approachto the core format of the classwhich is what makes themspecial.” states ss.With their varietyof instructors, time slots andstyles, there is a class for everyfitness level. From novice toexperienced exercisers andhip-shakers, each individualcan create Zumba to be a lowimpact or higher intensityworkout. For example, a personwith sacroiliac joint dysfunction,or other various lumbar-pelvicissues, must caution excessivespinal rotation, twisting andlateral flexion movement. Inessence, Zumba is still anachievable and healthyworkout, but regression, ormodification, tospecific dance moves isrecommended. For those with crunchyand achy knees and hips, andwho commit to Zumba longterm, it is advisable to weardance shoes rather than thetraditional running or walking.Zumba wear offers male andfemale dance shoes.Page 10 www.NWFitnessMag.comWhat is the difference? Locatedon the bottom of the danceshoe is a “pivot point” underthe metatarsal and calcaneusarea of the foot, which assistsin the turning and rotationalmovement. Packed classes startto heat the room with moistureand humidity. Once hardwoodfloors get tacky, the rotationalmovements “get sticky” withregular shoes, which causes achyknees and unhappy hips.In the fitness industry, fadsand trends happen incessantly.Zumba is one of the mostpopular trends, and continues toexpand globally. On a local level,visitwww.communityfitness.com to view the group exerciseschedule for on-going Zumba classes and events.“Weprovide an entire communityof people who participate andhave created a warm Zumba culture like nothing you can findanywhere else. It is a true Zumba Community.” States, MurphyMadden.BIO: Elizabeth Kovar M.A.,Seattle resident, is the fitnesscoordinator at the LynnwoodRecreation Center. NorthWest Fitness MagazineNorthWest Fitness MagazineHike of theMonthABy: Daniel LupasteanTuck and RobinLakest last, my first overnight hike of thesummer. With summer being in full swing,I decided to make this month’s hike of theActivity Type: Hikingmonth worthwhile. My first initial plan was to doNearby City: RoslynEnchantment Lakes, but with the clock windingLength: 15.6 total milesdown towards the end; the EnchantmentsElevation Gain: 3,700 feetended up being completely reserved and ISkill Level: Strenuousdidn’t want to take my chance on the lotteryDuration: Day-hike or backpack draw. As my plan went south, I ended up doing aovernightvery similar hike people call mini Enchantments.Season: Best midsummerTo reach Tuck & Robin Lakes, you must passthrough fallthrough the historic town of Roslyn. Once youTrailhead Elevation: 3,300 feetpass the little historic coal mining town, youTop Elevation: 6,330 feetcontinue to drive towards the Deception Passtrailhead. As the pavement comes to an end,Happy trails, you will continue on a dirt road for about 1Danhour until you reach the (Deception Pass 1376)trailhead. Once I finished my 1hr long drive onHiking time to Tuck 2hrs 51mins this slow dreaded dirt road, I reached a parkinglot full of cars. With the Northwest Forest passhanging on my rear view mirror, I gatheredmy gear and started my hike at 11:47am. ThePage 14 www.NWFitnessMag.comfirst part of this hike is fairly easy with no realelevation gain. In about 40 minutes, you willreach a lake called Hyas Lake. I didn’t stop thereand continued up the trail towards Tuck Lake. The trail starts to climb gradually after you passHyas Lake about 1hr or so into the hike. As Istarted to gain more elevation, the trail startedto get really steep and reminded me of hikingMailbox Peak. In some parts of the trail, you willhave to use both hands to climb over rocks andtree roots. The hike to Tuck Lake is about 2 milesoff the main trail of Deception Pass. I reachedTuck Lake about 2.38pm. The views are simplyincredible of Tuck Lake. The lake was completelysnow free with massive rocks and treessurrounding the lake. I didn’t stay long at TuckLake as I wanted to reach Robin Lakes beforeevening came around. The hike towards RobinLakes is also a bit tricky. I found the main trail bybushwhacking up the side of the mountain bywell-marked stone cairns. Once you hit the maintrail to Robin Lakes, your climb will continueto become more steep. There are some points in the trail where you will have to look out for the stacked stone cairns because thetrail will disappear into all the granite rock face of the mountain. I reached Robin Lakes from Tuck Lake in about 1hr 20mins. Althoughthe hike to Robin Lakes is only 1.7 miles from Tuck Lake, most of the incline is fairly steep. As I continued to look at the amazing viewsof Robin Lakes and the surrounding jagged mountain peaks, I spotted 3 mountain goats near the base of Robin Lake. After about10 minutes the mountain goats made their way up to where I was without any kind of hesitation. As curious as the mountain goatswere with my presence, they made circles around me and some other-fellow hikers I met at Tuck Lake. Although we outnumberedIf a goat approaches you, slowlymove away to keep a safedistance. If a goat decides to follow you,be prepared to chase it off bywaving your arms, yelling, oreven throwing rocks to scare itoffMountain goats love the tasteof salt, so please urinate off themain trail and away from yourcampsite at least 50 yardswww.NWFitnessMag.com Page 15

NorthWest Fitness MagazineNorthWest Fitness Magazinethe mountain goats 4 to 3, I dare not take any chances gettinggorged to death by their fierce sharp horns. As my bloodpressure remained normal, I took this opportunity tocapture some pictures and videos of these magnificentcreatures. Two of the goats were armed with hornsand one goat was actually a baby, always followingher mother close behind. As the mountain goatscontinued to get closer to us, we decided as agroup that it would be best to head back down toTuck Lake before any of us got traumatized withone of the sharp horns from the goats. Although Ididn’t get to stay much at Robin Lakes, the scrambleup to the lakes was well worth the excitement andexperience of these mountain goats. I then waved goodbye to the goats and started to make my way back to TuckLake. I reached Tuck Lake about 5:40pm and decided it wouldbe best to set up camp. With camp all in place, I managed tofix myself a meal and then do some exploring around Tuck Lakewith what light was left in the day. I ended up spending the nightat Tuck Lake next to the 3 people I meet earlier in the day, justbefore my ascent to Robin Lakes. As 10:30pm rolled around, Idecided it would be best to hit the sleeping bag.The next morning, I woke up around 7am and startedto gather up my gear and make my way back tothe car. I left Tuck Lake around 9:30am just beforeI said my farewells to my camping neighbors. With the sun out in full swing I started my descentback to the base of the mountain. Upon headingback, I encountered a few hikers going to differentlocations of the main Deception Pass trail. As myweekend couldn’t get any better, I managed toencounter a porcupine. To my surprise I have neverspotted a porcupine the in the wild, with the 22 yearsthat I have lived in Washington State. As the porcupinemade its way across its log, it managed to pick up my scentonce it hit the main hiking trail. With a little spook from me,the porcupine scampered off and started climbing a tree outof harm’s way and into safety. Might I add, these little spikedcreatures are great tree climbers. I captured some video andgreat pictures of the little bugger. I quickly got back onthe trail and started my way back to the car. I arrivedback at the car at about 1pm in the afternoon. As always make sure you carry your basic 10essentials and give yourself enough time to enjoyyour hiking experience. For those looking to do anovernighter at Tuck Lake as I ended up doing, makesure you bring enough gear to have a pleasantovernight hiking adventure. Although its summerand the weather is hot during the day, I would highlyrecommend bringing a warm jacket for the night, ascold wind temperature tend to drop.Page 16 www.NWFitnessMag.comStandup Paddle Board Yoga:The New Mind-Body ExerciseWritten by: Elizabeth Kovar M.A.Every year in fitness, there are new inventions or classideas to bring a fresh perspective to one’s workout. In the last several years, Standup Paddle Board Yogais one of those “fresh inventions” to where the boardis your mat, and nature isyour focal point. Plus, thecombination of paddling toand from the practice locationproduces a full-body workoutall while keeping the corestrong and stable to avoidfalling off the board.WASUP Yoga, located inthe Ballard neighborhood, conducts seasonal stand uppaddleboard yoga. Establishedin 2011, lead instructor, Hasna, met Andrew Drake whileshopping for a bathing suit atthe existing Surf Ballard. Drake, interested in offering yogaclasses, and Hasna, currentyoga instructor, exchangedbusiness cards and organicallycreated Washington StandupPaddleboard Yoga.Standup Paddle Board sizesvarious amongst differentlengths and widths, which isdependent upon the weightand skill level of the individual.Typically, the novice requiresa longer and flatter boardto offer more stability. Inaddition, standup paddlescontain an “elbow” in the shaftto maximize efficiency witheach stroke. Whether you aresitting at a desk or standing apaddleboard, posture is key to almost every activityin life. Paddlers must keep toes facing forward, feethip distance apart, soft bend at the knees and chestupright with strong and broad shoulders. Similarto riding a bike, once forwardmomentum increases, so doesstability. Yoga on land versus theboard differs greatly. First, themovement of water below theboard consistently challengesthe balance and the frame ofmind. If the board has a builtin handle, this is known asthe “Point of Balance” whilepaddling and during a yogapractice. When upright, keepingyour feet level with the handleand hip distance apart offersa place of stability. The pointsof balance are always on theright and left side of the board. While incorporating poses suchas warriors and wide-leggedforward folds the feet are placedin a wider stance with one footon each side of the board toremain balanced. This differsto land yoga where the feet arein alignment with each other;however, on the board, the morenarrow the stance the morechallenging.Second, in fitness there arevarious balance challengevariables to progress orregress an exercise. Thesevariables are commonly usedon unstable surfaces such aswww.NWFitnessMag.com Page 17

NorthWest Fitness MagazineNorthWest Fitness Magazineexternal stimulus, which createsthe body to want to move awayfrom the center of gravity andbalance point. Finally, going beyond thefour walls of a room instantlyincorporates an assortment ofviews all while connecting withnature. “Every class is different. You are part of nature during thisexperience and some days yousee seals, salmon and bald eagles. Some days the weather is betterthan others, but we embrace theSeattle weather.” states Hasna. Inone word, Hasna describes theexperience as “esoteric”.a BOSU, SPRI-360, Versa-discs andthe same knowledge is applicableto paddleboards. These balancechallenge variables include: contactpoint, visual affect, movement andexternal stimulus.-Contact Points refer to anythingthat supports the body to remainbalanced. On the board this mayinclude body parts or the paddle. The more parts of the body thatremain on the surface of the board, the better the balance, whichalso makes the exercise easier. Inaddition, incorporating the paddlein an exercise to where it touchesthe board will add another contactpoint to assist the balance.Page 18 www.NWFitnessMag.com-Visual Affect in exercise stimulatesthe proprioceptive and sensoryreceptor systems due to the factthat the visual feedback has beeneliminated. Yogis may incorporatevisibility or focal points to aidor challenge the balance. Thefocal point concentrates on onespot, which assists in balance;where as watching a boat motoron by challenges balance andconcentration. The other visualaffect is visibility. Dirty sunglassesor closing the eyes completelyincreases the balance challengewhile relying on the sensory organs.Movement refers to the range ofmotion of an exercise, which mayincorporate low or high degrees ofmotor skills, which challenges thebalance. On the board, not only arethere challenging yoga exercisesthat require more movement, butthe movement of the board itselfadds another dynamic of mentalconcentration and physical control.-External Stimulus refers to anyoutside force exerted or used duringan exercise. In paddleboard yoga, incorporating the paddle with poseswill increase the balance challenge. For example, when in tree pose, raising the paddle overhead utilizesconcentration to balance andmaintain strong arms overhead. Inaddition, strong wind may act as anBeyond a physical practice, thereis a deep connection, with yourselfor possibly the earth, during aSUP yoga practice. “Connection isthe number one thing we seek allthe time. When we are peacefuland serene we are in connection. When we are stressed anddistraught, we are disconnected.”The connection naturally happenswithout trying. During myexperience, I was enthralled, whilein a forward fold, that the waterwas actually the sky. It was surrealand felt like a dream.Novice and experienced paddlersand yogis are welcomed to classes.“Small progressions make theclass successful. For beginners westart slowly to build confidencebefore moving to your edge.”From relaxing to advanced poses, students can go “full board” intheir practice, as long as you arewilling to experience the water ifthe balance nose-dives.Got fear of the water? “Seeingvast expansive water maybe scary, but it is important to comfortpeople to the board and exercise.”Students must remember thatthey are able to create theirpractice to cater their desireor ability. “We are able to seestudent’s fears, and the instructormust help recognize it and movethat fear toward intention.” claimsHasna.Plus, instructors of paddleboardclasses are not able to coastalong with only instructing yogaasanas. “Instructors must analyzethe weather patterns such as thecurrents, tide levels and winds.”states Hasna.Hasna hires instructors whoare friends or within her yogicnetwork. Paddleboard yogabrings a fresh perspective toworking out. In my opinion, itdefinitely beats staring in themirror with a set of dumbbells inhand, Happy paddling.Elizabeth Kovar M.A, personaltrainer and yoga/fitnessinstructor, earned Yoga Alliance318 hours in Ashtanga yoga& Chakra Meditation from theAyurveda & Yoga Retreat andHospital in Coonor, India.
