Katy ISD Parent Page – A View Into Elementary InstructionKaty ISD Elementary Curriculum and Instruction has recently launched a link to a Canvascourse (no log-in required) that will give parents a firsthand look into elementary instruction. This page can be found under the ‘Parent Tab’ on the Katy ISD homepage or by clicking on the following link: https://katyisd.instructure.com/courses/84117This Canvas course will give you several resources and tools to help you understand whatyour students are doing in the classroom and also ways that you can help them at home.There are three main sections to the course: ‘Windows Into the Classroom’, ‘Questions andAnswers’, and ‘Parent Resources.’ Under the first section, ‘Windows Into the Classroom,’you will find instructional videos for Math, Word Study, and Reading (these videos are being updated all the time), along with a brief presentation about what curriculum looks likein Katy ISD. The last section, ‘Parent Resources,’ will directyou to other various resources that might be helpful to you.President’s AwardOne of the awards 5th grade students are eligible for is the President’s Education Award. Since1983, the President’s Education Awards Program has provided individual recognition from thePresident of The United States and the US Secretary of Education to those students whose outstanding efforts in the classroom have enabled them to meet challenging standards of excellence.OKE 5th grade students are eligible to receive this award if they meet each of the following criteria: 4th Grade final grade of 90% or higher in each of the academic core subjects of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies; 5th Grade first semester average of 90% or higher in each of the academic core subjects ofReading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, and Receive Advanced Performance level scores on either Reading or Math STAAR tests in 5 thGrade.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS SELECTION 2016Instructional materials for the courses listed below are being reviewed and selected this year for implementation in the 2016-2017 school year. Instructional materials under consideration will beon display during business hours (8:00AM-4:00PM) at the Education Support Complex, 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy, TX77494, until Thursday, March 24, 2016, with the exception of the week of Spring Break, Monday – Friday,March 14-18, 2016. Instructional Materials will also be available for review on Thursday, March 10, 2016and Tuesday, March 22, 2016 until 7:00PM. Parents and community members will have the opportunity toreview these materials and provide feedback to the selection committees making the recommendation.

Testing Dates—Campus ClosedDue to testing security, our campus will be closed to all visitors yet students are still inattendance on several days throughout the school year on testing days. The followingdays are scheduled for STAAR testing: Tuesday, March 29, 2016 – 4th Grade Writing, 5th Grade Math Wednesday, March 30, 2016 – 5th Grade Reading Thursday, March 31, 2016 – Make-Up Sessions Friday, April 1, 2016 - Make-Up Sessions Monday, May 9, 2016 – 3rd and 4th Grade Math, 5th Grade Math Re-test Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - 3rd and 4th Grade Reading, 5th Grade Reading Re-test Wednesday, May 11, 2016 - 5th Grade Science Thursday, May 12, 2016 - Make-Up Sessions Friday, May 13, 2016 - Make-Up SessionsVisitors to the building, volunteers, lunch visitors, and birthday treats will not be allowed onthese scheduled testing dates. Thank you for your patience while we try to provide optimaltesting conditions for our students.On these “Closed Campus” days, we will NOT have I-Station, FASTT Math, and AcceleratedReader in the morning before school. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDFORMATH AND SCIENCE TEACHINGThe National Science Foundation is currently accepting nominations and applicationsfor the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching(PAEMST) program. PAEMST is the highest recognition that a kindergartenthrough 12th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Awards may be given to mathematics and science teachers ineach state and U.S. jurisdiction and up to 108 awardees may be recognized each year.This year the teachers in grades K-6 are eligible for this award.
