WelcomeA MAN WITHTARTAN IN HISVEINSA Scotsman winning the US Open! Who'd havethought Michael Campbell would become the firstScottish Major winner since Paul Lawrie in the1999 Open? Now I know strictly speakingCampbell is a New Zealander but he himself isquick to attribute his golfing prowess to hisScottishness. His great, great, great grandfather not sure about the exact number of greats - was aman called Logan Campbell who travelled fromScotland to the land of the long cloud and settledin very nicely it would seem.Like Lawrie before him Campbell did well even tobe at Pinehurst having to go through pre-qualifying.He snatched one the last qualifying places at the firstUK-based US Open Qualifier at Walton Heath, superblypresented by Ian McMillan. To then take on and beat the big boys in the mainevent was quite an achievement but no more than youwould expect from a man with tartan blood flowingthrough his veins.Taking the Championship as a whole the USGAwent some way to rescuing themselves following theself inflicted problems of the previous year atShinnecock when, in their manic desire to protect OldMan Par, they made the course virtually impossible toplay.Indeed on one green you'd have had more chanceof halting a droplet running down a window panethan of stopping a golf ball on the short stuff. Theproblem reached such heights that the USGA decidedto water the green during play which goes against therules of golf and is definitely unfair to those playerswho had already gone through. Now this year the weather was extremely hotparticularly in the early part of the week but they hadto do the same again and water greens which werethreatening to bake and become rock hard. Now,surely the trick is to anticipate the potential problemsand prepare the course accordingly. Euan Grant, at StAndrews, tells me that he could get the greensstimping at 14 for this month's Open but because itcan be windy and the ball can be blown around theykeep them down at around 12. Pure commonsense! It was also interesting to read about Ian Poultercomplaining about the hole cups not being insertedproperly after a perfectly good looking putt bouncedout. By all accounts, according to the British press, hehad a valid point.I've been to the US Open once, back in 1994, andwas amazed that in the Media Centre scores werewritten on the huge scoreboard manually and very, very slowly, years after a much more effective andquicker system was in use in Europe. We can be all too quick to compare ourselvesunfavourably against our American cousins but weshouldn't. Our know how and skills are up there withthe very best.We shall see a perfect example of that at The OldCourse where we will also see how the new US OpenChampion copes on his return home.Scott MacCallum, EditorJCB EXPANSIONJCB'S UK dealers are embarking on one of theirbiggest single investment programmes by settingup separate sales companies to concentrate on JCBcompact equipment. The project will see the number of dealersalesmen dedicated to selling JCB compactequipment increase to in excess of 50.The dealers - Greenshields JCB CompactEquipment, Gunn JCB Compact Equipment, Holt JCBCompact Equipment, Scot JCB Compact, TC HarrisonJCB Compact and Watling JCB Compact - will alsocreate separate compact equipment showrooms atselected depots covering England, Scotland andWales. The dealers' expansion follows a decision earlierthis year by JCB to set up its own CompactEquipment Sales division for Europe."JCB's compact equipment sales have beengrowing rapidly in recent years and have nowreached a level where the creation of new compactequipment sales companies, with a dedicated, specialised sales force, makes sense," said the JCBSales MD, Françoise Rausch.HUGE EFFORT AT WENTWORTHOnce again BIGGA Members who volunteeredtheir services for the BMW PGA Championship atWentworth had the pleasure of being part of agreat tournament on a Course superbly presented,as always, by Chris Kennedy and his GreenkeepingTeam. This year 15 BIGGA Members were on standbyduty in case of bad weather on the Thursday andFriday of the event. As it turned out the weatherwas kind with only a distant threat ofthunderstorms on the second day.On the Saturday and Sunday 40 volunteers plusa few reserves were available as bunker rakers forall the matches, played at times in very windyconditions, making scoring difficult. In the endAngel Cabrera was a worthy winner of theChampionship.I know Chris was very appreciative of all theteam who gave up their valuable time toparticipate, some making journeys from as far asthe West Country and the Midlands.I would like to thank everybody for making myjob so easy and representing our Association in avery professional manner.Clive OsgoodSouth East Regional AdministratorThe Wentworth Support Team with Championship winner Angel CabreraMORE DEALERS FOR KUBOTAKubota has appointed several additional dealersin southern England and Wales to strengthen itsexisting roster. The line-up of new Kubota ConstructionEquipment dealers across southern Englandcomprises Harper Plant of Salisbury, whose territorycovers Hampshire and Dorset; Lister Wilder ofReading, with other depots at Cirencester, Devizesand Ockham, whose territory covers Avon,Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Berkshire and Surrey;and South West Plant Sales of Monkokehampton, whose territory covers Devon and Somerset.Stubbing Brothers of Ventor has been appointedto cover the whole of the Isle of Wight, whileVincent Tractors of Fraddon now looks afterCornwall.
