List of Human Research Ethics Committeesregistered with NHMRCThe table below lists the Human Research Ethics Committees (‘HREC’) registered with NHMRC.HRECs highlighted in blue have either been registered, closed or their details have been updated sincethe previous version of this document. What does ‘registered’ mean? For an HREC to be ‘registered’ with NHMRC, the institution(s) that established the HREC notifiesNHMRC of the HREC’s existence and provides a signed declaration that the HREC will comply with theNational Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, 2007 (National Statement) and anyrevisions made to it.Although the primary responsibility for monitoring the activities of an HREC rests with the institution(s)that established it, each year institutions that have established an HREC self-report to NHMRC on theHRECs activities over the previous calendar year. What is a ‘Certified Institution’?To be identified as a ‘Certified Institution’, the institution’s ethical review process has undergone anindependent assessment conducted by a certifying body (currently, NHMRC).Certification begins with the institution carrying out a self-assessment of its ethical review processesand supporting structures against agreed national criteria. This is followed by a desktop assessment bythe certifying body before an on-site visit to verify institutional claims and practices.Certification is dependent upon a satisfactory demonstration of institutional conformance with specifiedcriteria which, in part, are based on the National Statement - including that the HREC is appropriatelyconstituted, and that its institution’s policies, processes and procedures meet an agreed national set ofcriteria. Further information on the National Certification Scheme.
