Instructions for Using the Volleyball Scoresheet Tracking the Libero121The assistant scorekeeper (libero tracker) is responsible for tracking liberoreplacements in keeping with several important rules.1. Once the libero is replaced, at least one rally must be completed beforethe libero can replace another player. An exception occurs when the liberostays on the court to serve in the next rally. In one rotation, the libero canreplace the player in the serving position and serve the next rally even if sheis already on the court having replaced another player. If the libero is going to serve the next rally, the libero does not have to exitthe court before replacing the player in the serving position. At all othertimes, the assistant scorekeeper should observe that when the libero isreplaced, she does not re-enter the set until after the next rally is completed.A ”rally” occurs when a team legally contacts a serve or the first refereeassesses a sanction penalty. The service position where the libero serves isnoted by placing a triangle around the Roman numeral (I - VI) in the ServiceOrder column. This triangle indicates the only position where the liberocan serve for the remainder of the set.2. When the libero leaves the court, the player replacing the libero mustbe the same player that the libero replaced when she last entered the court. The assistant scorekeeper uses the Libero Tracking Seet to record the liberoreplacements and ensure their legality. This form must always reflect thenumbers of the six players who are currently on the court for each team. The starting players are listed in serving order under the column labeled SPon the Libero Tracking Sheet. Libero replacements are recorded by writingL beside the number of the replaced player to indicate that the libero hasentered the court in that player’s position. When the non-libero playerreturns to the court, the re-entering player’s number is written beside theL. Neither the L nor the non-libero player’s number are slashed to recordthe replacement. All regular substitutes are also recorded on the LiberoTracking Sheet by slashing the number of the player leaving the court andwriting the number of the entering substitute (as on line VI on page 123).Each time a regular substitution is made, the next number (1 - 12) in theTeam Substitutions line is slashed as well. The substitution count on the

122 Instructions for Using the Volleyball ScoresheetLibero Tracking Sheet should always equal the substitution count on thescoresheet. This information should be confirmed frequently during thematch. The assistant scorekeeper can provide backup information abou thenumber of substitutions used by each team for the other match officials ifasked. When an exceptional substitution is made, the number of the player leavingthe court is circled instead of slashed, and the next number is not slashed inthe Team Substitution line (an exceptional substitution does not count as ateam substitution).3. The libero can only replace a back-row player. In the Servicecolumn, the assistant scorekeeper marks a tally ( ) when each playercontacts the first service for each of her terms of service. For example, thefirst time Red No. 6 serves in the example set below, one tally is enteredunder the Service column. Regardless of the number of times Red No. 6serves before losing a rally, only one tally mark is entered for that term ofservice. The tally indicates only that Red No. 6 is the current server, whichallows the assistant scorekeeper to deduce that the Red back-row playersare No. 6, No. 4, and No. 8 (the current server and the last two servers). Therefore, those are the only players that the Red libero can replace whileNo. 7 is in the service position (position 1, right back). If the assistant scorekeeper discovers that any of the rules above have beenviolated, the second referee should be notified immediately. The assistantscorekeeper is not required to wait for the next serve to be contacted beforereporting the problem. The assistant scorekeeper must also ensure that the six players for eachteam who were on the court before a timeout are the same players whoreturn to the court after the timeout. The second referee should be notifiedimmediately if this rule is not followed.Libero Tracking ExampleThe example on page 123 demonstrates the various notations commonlymade by the assistant scorekeeper on the Libero Tracking Sheet.

Instructions for Using the Volleyball Scoresheet 123The example shows that the libero has replaced starting players No. 6 andNo. 1 several times. At one point, No. 2 substituted for No. 6, and the liberothen replaced No. 2. Consequently, No. 2 must be the player who replacesthe libero. If the coach does not want No. 2 to remain on the court, the coachmust substitute for No. 2 (in the example, No. 6 was substituted for No. 2).Notice that the players’ numbers are only slashed when a regular substitionis made (not a libero replacement), and that the number of slashes on the sixServing Order lines should equal the tally of Team Substitutions. The libero also replaced No. 1 at some point in the set and served in thatrotation (note the triangle around Roman numeral IV under Serving Order). This is the only rotation in which the libero can legally serve for this entireset. The example also shows that the libero is currently in the service position(position 1, right-back). That is determined by noting that, in the Servicecolumn, line IV has 3 tally marks, and line V has only 2 tally marks, indicating that the player(s) on line IV is currently serving, and the playerson line V will be the next server. Therefore, the assistant scorekeeper canquickly determine that the back-row players at this time are the libero, No.7 and No. 3.Libero Tracking in a Deciding SetIn a deciding set, the three-column section of the Libero Tracking Sheet isused to accommodate the teams changing courts when one team has scoredeight points. Before the teams switch courts, record libero replacements

124 Instructions for Using the Volleyball Scoresheetand substitutions in the far left column of the libero tracking sheet forthe team that starts the set to the scorekeeper’s left. Record the positionwhere the libero serves (if applicable) and the tallies for Service and TeamSubstitutions for that team in both the far left and far right sections. Forthe team that starts on the scorekeeper’s right, record replacements andsubstitutions in the middle column only. When the teams switch sides, move the last entry on each of the six linesfrom the far left column to the far right column labeled CP (which standsfor “Current Player”). If the libero is on the court when the switch occurs, record the number of the player the libero replaced, and write an L to theright of it. For the remainder of the set, use the middle column for the teamthat is now on the scorekeeper’s left, and the far right column for the teamthat is on the scorekeeper’s right. See the example below.
