Mayor’s Youth CouncilRecognizing the need to honor the voices of young people in the City of Pittsburgh and the importance of highlighting youth’s lived experiences, Councilman CoreyO’Connor will launch the Youth Participatory Budget Council (YPBC) in 2017. The YPBC is a youth led program that focuses on promoting understanding of city government,developing youth leadership, elevating youth voices in the City of Pittsburgh, and providing a platform for youth to propose projects to City Council members and theMayor. In each session, youth will learn lessons on Teamwork, Planning Projects, City Government, Advocacy, and Research and Development, through a series ofactivities and guest speakers. These lessons will help the youth develop their project proposal. Youth are expected to participate in all sessions, develop a project proposal,and then present that project proposal to City Council at the end of the program. There is no cost toparticipate in the program. High school students produce a 30 second personal safety video for the program. The videos are entered into our contest to determine regionaland national winners. The goal of the program is to give teens a voice, encourage responsible decision making and promote personal safety. Dr. Helen Faison:Dr. Helen S. Faison was one of the first African American teachers in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Dr. Faison also was a fewother firsts for the district. An amazing educator, Dr. Faison became the districts first black guidance counselor atWestinghouse High School and then in 1968 Dr. Faison became the first female and African American to become a high schoolprincipal in PPS. Dr. Faison went on to become assistant superintendent in 1970 and then in 1983 became the first femaledeputy superintendent. Her leadership in Pittsburgh Public Schools was praised as she became interim superintendent in1999, the first African American to lead the school district.Dr. Faison was born in 1924 and her more than 43-year career in education undoubtedly shaped the lives of many studentsand teachers in Pittsburgh. The district recognized her contributions by naming Pittsburgh Faison K-5 in her honor. Herlegacy in education is well known in Pittsburgh.Dr. Faison is a graduate of Westinghouse High School and earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees as well has herdoctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. Her career also includes visiting professor and chair at Chatham College’seducation department and the director of the Pittsburgh Teaching Institute. Dr. Faison was also awarded the first fullyendowed chair of the University of Pittsburg’s school of Education and was also a member of the Board of Trustees of theFund for Advancement of Minorities through Education.Dr. Faison passed away in 2015.
