1.Start by removing the front stock spring hangers. Toremove the rivets, grind the heads flush. Center punch anddrill using progressively larger drills up to a 5/16" drill. Therivet should be easy to punch out. If not, then drill with a3/8 bit. Take care not to drill the original rivet holes largeror off center, the new parts with use these holes. The brackets will bolt directly to the existing holes on the1948-1952 Ford pick up and only the 7/16 underside holewill have to be drilled using the tab hole as a guide asshown in instruction #2.On 1953-1956 Ford pick up draw a line down through thefront set of original hanger holes. Draw a second line 1½inch rearward of the original holes. Position the new hangerbracket straight edge forward as pictured so that the fronttwo holes line up with the new line and the bottom tab isflush with the bottom of the frame. Square the bracket tothe top of the frame and clamp securely to frame.2.Using a 7/16 transfer punch, center punch the bottom framerail through the bracket tab hole. Use a center drill or 1/8inch drill bit to pilot drill starter hole through the frame railand the lower cross-member flange. It is easier to drill thehole out to 7/16 inch using progressively larger drill bitsstarting with ¼ inch. It is also better to use a drill motorwith a side handle to steady the drilling process to preventthe bit from catching and twisting out of your hands. On 1948-1952 Ford pick up proceed to instruction #5.On 1953-1956 pick ups next, using the 7/16 by 1¼ inchbolt, temporarily bolt bracket to frame as pictured in upperright.3.1953-1956 Ford pick up onlyCheck the bracket again to be sure it is square with thetop of the rail and using a 3/8 inch transfer punch, centerpunch the top two holes through the bracket onto the side ofthe frame. Center drill front hole as before and then drillhole to 3/8 inch. Temporarily install a 3/8 by 1 inch bolt inthe drilled hold and tighten. This will keep the bracket frommoving as you drill the remaining hole. After the top two holes are drilled, remove the bracketfrom the frame rail. You are going to use the hanger bracketfrom the opposite side as a pattern to drill the bottom holes.Page 2 of 7(c) 2011 Total Cost Involved Engineering, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

4.1953-1956 Ford pick up onlyYou have to use the bracket from the opposite side as apattern because the cross-member rivet will interfere withthe lower inner tab on the bracket you were originallyusing.Bolt the opposite side bracket upside down on the framerail as pictured and use the same drilling procedure asbefore. When drilling is finished remove the bracket and replacewith the correct side.5.1948-1956 Ford pick upAlign the correct bracket over the drilled holes and usingthe furnished 3/8 by 1 inch bolts, washers and nuts fastenthe hanger to the side of the frame. The top bolts go throughthe bracket from the outside of the frame, the bottom boltsgo from inside the frame with the nuts on the bracket sideand the 7/16 by 1¼ inch bolt with washer goes through thebottom tab and through the frame and cross-member lowerflange with the nut and washer on the inside of the framerail as pictured in lower left picture.Note: Driver’s side bracket shown.6.Remove the stock rear shackle hangers. Use the sameprocedure to remove the rivets as the front bracket. The brackets will bolt directly to the existing holes on the1948-1952 Ford pick up and only the 7/16 underside holewill have to be drilled using the tab hole as a guide asshown in instruction #7.On 1953-1956 pick ups draw a line through the frontoriginal shackle hanger hole. Draw another line 1½ inchforward and position the new hanger bracket straight edgeand shackle bushing hole to the rear as pictured and line therear two holes with the new line and the bottom tab is flushwith the bottom of the frame. Square the bracket to the topof the frame and clamp securely to frame.Page 3 of 7(c) 2011 Total Cost Involved Engineering, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

7.Using the same procedure for drilling the underside 7/16inch hole as you did on the front bracket. After the hole isdrilled, temporarily bolt the bracket to the frame using the7/16 by 1¼ inch bolt.1948-1952 Ford pick up proceed to instruction #108.1953-1956 Ford pick up onlyCheck the bracket again to be sure it is square with the topof the rail and using a 3/8 inch transfer punch, center punchthe top two holes through the bracket onto the side of theframe. Center drill front hole as before and then drill hole to3/8 inch. Temporarily install a 3/8 by 1 inch bolt in thedrilled hold and tighten. This will keep the bracket frommoving as you drill the remaining hole. After the top two holes are drilled, remove the bracketfrom the frame rail. You are going to flip the bracket upsidedown and use the hanger bracket as a pattern to drill thebottom holes.Note: Driver’s side bracket shown.9.1953-1956 Ford pick up onlyBolt the bracket upside down on the frame rail as picturedand use the same drilling procedure as before. When drilling is finished remove the bracket and flip rightside up and proceed with bolting hanger bracket to theframe.Page 4 of 7(c) 2011 Total Cost Involved Engineering, Inc. 10.1948-1956 Ford pick upAlign the bracket over the drilled holes and using thefurnished 3/8 by 1 inch bolts, washers and nuts fasten thehanger to the side of the frame. The top bolts go through thebracket from the outside of the frame, the bottom bolts gofrom inside the frame with the nuts on the bracket side andthe 7/16 by inch bolt with washer goes through the bottomtab and through the frame and cross-member lower flangewith the nut and washer on the inside of the frame rail aspictured in lower left picture.Note: Driver’s side bracket shown.11.Installing rear shock cross memberMeasured from the rear bed hole forward along the top ofthe frame rail and draw a line across the top of the framerail to drill the hole for the cross member. There are twodifferent measurements because of frame length.1948- 1952 Ford pick up-------27½ inches1953-1956 Ford pick up--------29¼ inches12.Set the cross member on top of the rail. Make sure theshock sleeves are parallel with the top of the rails. Centeredthe cross member for and aft on the line. Center the crossmember from side to side as pictured. Center punch oneside with a ½ inch transfer punch as pictured in lower leftcorner. Center drill the hole and finish drilling to ½ inch.Set the cross member back up on top of the frame rails andinsert a ½ inch bolt through the cross member and throughthe hole in the frame as pictured in upper right. On theopposite side line up the tube on the line and center punchthe frame and drill the hole out to ½ inch.Page 5 of 7(c) 2011 Total Cost Involved Engineering, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

13.Install the cross member between the rails with the shocktubes parallel to the top of the frame. If the cross member isinstalled upside down the shock tubes will be pointing up.Install a ½ inch bolt through the frame into the crossmember on one side to register it properly. Using a ½ inchtransfer punch go through the frame hole and the crossmember and punch center hole. Use a long small drill bitand drill through the ½ inch top hole to the center hole inthe bottom rail. The final ½ inch hole can be drilled fromthe bottom to keep the bit from ‘walking”. Slide the crossmember back up to the hole and install the ½ inch bolt allthe way through. On the other side now that the crossmember is positioned correctly you can drill through the tophole and using the cross member as a guide, drill the ½ inchhole all the way through the rail.14.Spring InstallationInstall the spring end with the pressed steel lined bushing inthe front hanger using the 4 inch x ½ inch bolt. Install nutand lightly tighten.Install the shackle urethane bushings into the rear of thespring and the rear shackle hanger. Use a soft hammer totap them in. The bushings will stick out just a little but willseat fully when the shackle plates are fully tightened.Lightly tap the shackle pins through the bushings in thespring and the rear shackle hanger. Install the shackle platesover the ends of the pins, install the nuts and tighten.Finish tightening the front spring hanger bolts.15.Installing spring pads.Measure the center to center measurement of the springcenter bolts on the springs that were just installed. This willbe the spring pad centers measurement. Center the pads onyour housing. The pinion angle is 5 degrees up from the spring pads withthe spring pads being level. Clamp or lightly tack weld thebrackets and double check brackets for equal side to sidecentering and the correct pinion angle. Finish welding thebrackets.Page 6 of 7(c) 2011 Total Cost Involved Engineering, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
