T R A N S I T I O N T IMESPAGE 3Behind the Scenes– Producer, Director, Special EffectsDavid O. Selznick was the producer for such classic movies, like“Gone With the Wind”, “Rebecca”,and “King Kong.” He was born inPittsburgh to a silent film maker. Hestarted his career as a script editorbefore launching his own companyin 1935. He won two academyawards with “Gone With the Wind”and “Rebecca.”“Gone with the Wind’s” success overshadowed the rest of Selznick's career. The closest he cameto matching it was with “Duel in theSun” (1946) featuring future wifeJennifer Jones in the role of the primary character Pearl. With a hugebudget, the film is known for causing moral upheaval because of thethen risqué script written by Selznick. And though it was a troublesome shoot with a number of directors, the film would turn out to be amajor success. The film was thesecond highest grossing film of1947 and turned out to be the firstmovie that Martin Scorsese wouldsee, inspiring Scorsese's career as adirector.George Romero was born in NewYork City. He attended CarnegieMellon University. The majority ofhis films have been shot in oraround Pittsburgh. One of his early commercial films, was a segment for “Mister Rogers'Neighborhood.” In the film Mr.Rogers underwent a tonsillectomy. This inspired Romero to go into thehorror film business. He, along withnine friends, formed Image TenProductions in the late 1960s, andproduced “Night of the LivingDead” (1968). The movie, directedby Romero and co-writtenwith John A. Russo, became a cultclassic and a defining moment formodern horror cinema. His three films that followed “Nightof the Living Dead” were not assuccessful. In 1978, Romero returned to the zombie genrewith “Dawn of the Dead” (1978).Shot on a budget of just 500,000,the film earned over 55 millionworldwide and was named one ofthe top cult films by EntertainmentWeekly in 2003. Romero made athird entry in his "Dead Series"with “Day of the Dead” (1985).Some critics have seen social commentary in much of Romero's work. They view “Night of the LivingDead” as a film made in reaction tothe turbulent 1960s, “Dawn of theDead” as a satireon consumerism, “Day of theDead” as a study of the conflictbetween science and the military. He has earned the nickname Godfather of all Zombies.Pittsburgh-born actor/SFX wizard/stuntman/director Tom Savinidid a tour of duty as a combat cameraman in Vietnam, and has sinceacquired a remarkable cult following among film fans, primarily dueto his ground-breaking special effects (SFX) in the "splatter movie"explosion of the early 1980s. Alongwith fellow special make-up legendsDick Smith and Rob Bottin, Saviniwas one of the key SFX people behind the startling make-up & SFXseen in the fantasy/horror genrefilms of the 1980s-'90s. Savini washeavily influenced by the remarkable silent-era actor Lon Chaney, and he sought to emulate the amazing theatrical make-up effects thatwere a hallmark of Chaney's career. In addition to his special effectswork, he has appeared in front of thecamera, typically typecasted as aleather clad biker. Savini runs theSpecial Effects Make-Up and Digital Film Programs at the DouglasEducation Center in Monessen,Pennsylvania. He is the author ofseveral books on special effects including “Grande Illusions I and II”(1983, 1994) which detail the production and mechanical workings ofmany of his famous film effects. Heis also associated with other booksin the horror genre including “Bookof the Dead and Horror 101” forwhich he wrote the foreword.
