This is referred to as the “Post-First” setting. “Post-First” may help to promotemore original responses to a discussion question.

Discussion Boards 6GRADEGraded Discussion Forums. The grading option automatically creates a GradeCenter item for either the Discussion Forum or for individual threads. Note that youcannot select to grade threads and also let users create their own threads. If you select the radio button for Grade, you will also have to enter the number of pointsthat the graded forum is worth. In this example, this graded forum is worth 100 points:You can also specify a Due Date at this point. And you have the option to associate a Rubric. You can either attach a Rubric that youhave already created or create a new one. After clicking Submit, a column will automatically be created in the Grade Center withthe same title as the graded discussion forum, worth the number of points specified.SUBSCRIBETurning on these options will allow the members the option to receive an emailnotification when either a new post is made anywhere in the forum, or when a new postis made to a thread that they have subscribed to, depending on with option you select. We recommend that you enable the Subscribe functions.

Discussion Boards 7CREATE AND EDITAllow Anonymous Posts: If this is checked, students can opt to not associate theirname with a post. You might use this setting for a General Questions forum if you wantto remove any stigma to answering sensitive questions or with an Evaluative forum ifyou want students to give general feedback about the course.Allow Author to Delete Own Posts: Students can remove a post that they areunhappy with. You also have the option to allow the removal of Only posts with noreplies.Allow Author to Edit Own Published Posts: Students can modify their alreadypublished post if this is selected.*Allow Members to Create New Threads: Students can create new discussion threadswithin the forum.*Allow File Attachments: Students can embed a photo, video or attached document intheir discussion board posting*Allow Users to Reply with Quote: Students can easily quote pieces of another threadthat they are replying to.Force Moderation of Posts: Posts will not appear until they have been reviewed by amoderator, which would either be the instructor or an assigned student. We do notrecommend using this function, as it will create a significant amount of work for themoderator.ADDITIONAL OPTIONSAllow Post Tagging: This isn’t applicable to our installation of Blackboard.Allow Members to Rate Posts: This creates an option for students to give postsratings based on 1-5 stars.
