Reading prosody is evaluated using a qualitative scale.Essay CompositionGrades 3–12 The Essay Composition subtest is designed to measure spontaneous writingfluency at the discourse level. Examinees are asked to write a descriptiveexpository essay within a 10-minute time limit. Essays are scored forsemantics, grammar, and mechanics. Examinees write a sentence for each item using atarget word, completing as many items as possible within 5 minutes. Scoringincorporates the number of words written, use of the target word, andsubject-verb agreement.Numerical OperationsGrades K–12 The Numerical Operations subtest measures math calculation skills. Forearly items, examinees respond orally to questions about number conceptsand counting. For later items, examinees write answers to printed mathproblems ranging from basic operations with integers to geometry, algebra, and calculus problems.Decoding FluencyGrades 3–12 The Decoding Fluency subtest is designed to measure phonic decodingfluency. Examinees read aloud a list of pseudowords as quickly as possibleduring two timed trials.SpellingGrades K–12 The Spelling subtest measures written spelling from dictation. Examineeswrite words that are dictated within the context of a sentence. This characteristic of Normal curves is referred to as the 68–96–99.7 rule. Illustrative example: Wechsler IQ Scores. Wechsler IQ scores compare people of the same age using a score in which values are scalled to be Normal with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. Let X represent Wechsler IQ scores. Using our notation, X N(100, 15 .
