Pearl Harbor Remembrance Dayby Jeff (W4BIX)What a great turnout we had for the Pearl HarborRemembrance Day on board the Battleship NorthCarolina on December 7th! Both operating areaswere overflowing with our club and visiting clubmembers. Using a group of 18 operators (yes youread that right!), a total of 216 contacts were madebetween phone and CW with stations thatstretched halfway around the world.I also had posted a picture of us operating on theship in the Ham Radio group on Facebook. Inaddition to posting the photo I ran a six minuteLIVE video feed of the SSB operation whichgarnered some great comments and questionsabout QSL’s, what frequencies we were operatingon and several who mentioned that they hadvisited the ship in the past. Several contacts weremade as a result of posting the event on Facebook.Thank you everyone for your participation. Thosewho wanted to operate were given a chance at themike or key and there was plenty of action to goaround. Another great club function in the books!A side note – why the NI4BK call sign? The ship’soriginal call sign during World War II was NIBK, sothe club decided to get a club sponsored FCCapproved call sign for the battleship for when weoperate from the radio rooms, hence the creationof NI4BK.

Member Spotlightby Linwood (NT4F)Name: Mike HartmannCall sign: NI2SAny previously held call signs: WA2QICWhat class are you (Tech, General, Extra): ExtraWhat year did you first get licensed as a hamoperator: 1977What made you want to become a ham: I wasinterested in short wave radio for many years afterbeing exposed to Ham Radio by my father, K2AJV(SK). I participated in the CB craze of the 70's andthis was further impetus to get my ticket. I pulledtwo life-long friends along with me – John,WA2LWT/N2NO (recently SK) and Alan, WA2LXUwho now holds my Dads old call.Any memorable moments from your hamexperience that stand out: I've had many - but Ithink my adventure into NYC as a teenager to takethe Novice test at the FCC office on Varick St, andmy first (CW) contact - I was a nervous wreck. Thefirst Field Day I attended at age 7, which started myHam Radio adventure (I was hooked on Ham Radioand Field Day from then on). There are also manymemorable moments over the course of my 20 years of service in RACES organizations, whichinclude the Sept 11 WTC attack, and also winning1st place in the 1F category of Field Day in 2017.My role in 9/11 response was insignificant, butthose events are, of course, seared into mymemory.Did you have an Elmer & if so, who was it: My Dadwas an Elmer, of course, though he favored the'throw 'em in the deep end of the pool' approach, and my High School Physics teacher Bill Grahn,WB2QFZ (SK)Your favorite modes of operation and bands: I'mnot a 'mode snob', I've worked CW and Phone, butmy CW skills have atrophied from lack of use.Working on getting back into operating conditionon CW. I haven' t done any digital mode workmostly due to the lack of equipment and time todig into a new mode. I'm also interested in Satellitecoms, but have yet to dive in, though I do have thegear for it.Anything you want the club to know about YOU:Since first being introduced to Field Day I haveattended every Field Day since. Of course, since Igot my ticket, I’ve been operating at every FieldDay. That would be 51 years in attendance, and 42years operating field day. I am proudest of my hamradio public service over the course of 20 years –first with Essex County NJ RACES, and then as theleader of the municipal RACES Team at ParsippanyOffice of Emergency Management, where my teamwas one of the best, if not the best, and certainlymost active emergency services of it’s type in theState. This is a pic from a Field Day I think around 2011 or so under the ParsippanyOEM banner. Standing is myself, and standing to my right is my brotherWalter, KC2WJN, Seated left is Nick Karkanias, KC2KND, and right is AlanMachbitz, K2AJV, with his son Lee at the mic.

Christmas Ho Ho Ho on theBattleshipby Jack (WD4OIN)On Black Friday,Nov. 29th, 4 members of theAzalea Coast Amateur Radio Club set up radio's onthe Battleship USS North Carolina for the kids totalk with Santa's chief elf, Norman(KI4YSY) at thenorth pole to tell him what they wantedfor Christmas. Allan, KX2H and June, N4FAMmanned radio central for the kids and Norman,KI4YSY and Jack, WD4OIN manned the North Poleelf station. There was a line of excited kids in radio central totalk to the North Pole all day. They had a list oftoys, games and all kinds of requests includingdogs, cats, cars and even a shotgun. We weresurprised at how many of the kids ask aboutRudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and was told thatRudolph was doing fine and resting up forChristmas. We’re all brothers and sisters!contributed by Linwood (NT4F)We're all brothers and sisters!A little black box of jewels and rocks, with lanterns that flicker and glow,Make lighter the gloom in my little back room, where often I haste to go.An anthem it peals of whistles, tones and squeals, and voices so ghostly and near,That you'd never decry, should you chance to passby, what a brotherhood and sisterhood foregathershere! Each separate tone has a soul of its own;each voice is the voice of a friend,United through space in this gathering-placeat the radiant rainbow's end.Reverberant sounds ride the wave that rebounds, like the wave of the sea, from afar.Reporting the doings, the comings and goings ofbrothers and sisters, wherever they are.A curious band, spread over the land, yet joined from equator to poles,Disperses the gloom in each little back roomby this magic communion of souls.I could part with a lot of the things that I've got,but I'll carry my love to the tomb,Of that little black box and the joys it unlockswhen I enter that little back room!By: Max P.
