Gold Wing Road RidersAssociationVancouver, WashingtonCHAPTER WA-XFlights of the PhoenixMAY 2015 EDITIONHi Everyone,May is here, and looking at the ride schedule for the district, there will be a lot of rides going on. So pick out yourfavorites or ones of particular interest and enjoy the ride.It was a pleasure meeting up with Chapter “I” and riding with them to the Grist Mill in Woodland. It’s the first timethat I have been there when they were actually open and grinding, so it was interesting to see the entire processand take some pictures. The staff there were very helpful in describing the process, including selling the flour tohelp support the mill. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience, especially being able to share it with anotherChapter. The weather looks like it will be nice for our chapter gathering, so bring your bikes. There will be a ride after themeeting — we’ll be riding to the Berry Patch. The Ride Schedule for 2015: May– Berry Patch, ride leader will be Bruce HibbsJune-- Grayland State Park, leader will be Duane PetersonJuly— Ape Caves, leader will be Pete GoetzAugust— No Ride ScheduledSept— Johnson’s Ridge, leader will be Bruce HibbsOct— Troutlake, leader will be Michael MillerAny time you would like to get together for a ride, feel free to call me. I will send out an email to everyone to gettogether with time and place.Ride Safe, Ride Often, and remember we’ll be seeing you “thru the windshield” .Pete & Lynda Goetz, CD’s Chapter XGWRRA: DEDICATED TO FRIENDSHIP, FUN, SAFETY & KNOWLEDGE

Page 3 MAY 2015GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATIONCHAPTER WA-XReady, GoBy Bruce and Rose HibbsIattended the Advance Rider Course in Battleground on 18 April. The training was put on by MarkLewis and Tom Denny. Bob and Dawna Hitch were also there to assist. Lots of valuable information waspresented. The afternoon session provided the opportunity to learn and improve riding skills. Overall –the class was excellent and FUN! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new techniques !Well, we have talked about and hopefully done everything needed to get ready for the summer rides. We attended some training, performed a thorough inspection of our bikes, and ensured all our equipment (i.e. first aid kits, helmets, gloves and jackets) is up to date and in good condition. So let’s go for a ride but wait this is the Pacific Northwest. That means it could be raining now and ina few minutes the sun will be out. When it’s raining, we put on our rain gear. But when it gets warm out,we tend to take protective clothing off – not a good idea.Even if we never plan on falling off or laying our bikes down, we should always be prepared. We mayall be aging at the same speed, but I know my current age won’t let me recover very well or fast from aspill. At a minimum, a long sleeve shirt, long pants, over- the-ankle boots, and full finger gloves shouldbe worn. Tank top, shorts, and flip flops offer little protection against road rash.Don’t forget the sunscreen. Even with a helmet on, we are very susceptible to wind and sun burn. Thesun visor intensifies the sun rays. The back of the neck is another vulnerable spot. Getting burneddoesn’t feel good and distracts from your ability to concentrate on the ride and other elements.Let’s all get out there, have fun and be safe!!
