THE HERO OF SWITZERLAND AS A WAYFINDING MARKERViews of the model were used to develop an appropriate massing forthe building.View from South-WestThe new development on the site of the Hero of Switzerland is envisaged as a wayfinding marker at the heart of the Loughborough Estate. ‘Hero Square’ is the largestpublic space in the Estate and has been identified in the Loughborough Junction Framework Plan as a ‘gateway project’. This new development will signal its locationfrom Loughborough Junction and on the approach from Brixton.32View from South-EastView from North-EastA model of the site, including the extent of the Loughborough Estate, was constructed at 1:1000 scale. This proved to be an extremely useful tool for assessing thewider impact of various massing strategies, and experimenting with various heights and forms.33

UNITÉ D’HABITATIONLOUGHBOROUGH ESTATELE CORBUSIER: THE HEROOF SWITZERLAND?Although the sign outside the Hero of Switzerlanddepicts William Tell, some believe that the pub mayhave been named by the architects in reference to LeCorbusier, the Swiss architect whose work was theinfluence for much of the architecture on the estate. The Unité d’habitation in Marseilles was the firstof several apartment blocks by Le Corbusier thataimed to reinvent high density housing.Maisonette blocks on Loughborough Estate, built 5years later, follow a similar design.3435

UNITÉ D’HABITATION RESEARCH TRIPWe visited the Unité d’habitation in Marseilles to continue ourstudy. This building was directly influential to the design of theLoughborough Estate so it is vital that we understand its design andsuccess.Studies of the sculptural columns at ground level. The varying columns in different Unité blocks began toinform those that can be seen on the ground floor of our design.3637
