Director’s NotesConfusion of the heart. Quotable moments. Mischievousservants. A contrived weekend in the country. Soundslike one of Shakespeare’s comedies, doesn’t it? It’s AMidsummer Night’s Dream with a Stephen Sondheim scorebut it is so much more. Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s1959 film, Smiles of a Summer Night, Sondheim’s operettaleaves room to explore loneliness, aging, suicidal selfloathing, and the disappointments of missed opportunity.Choices have consequences, and relationships sting asoften as they soothe.I, like so many others, am a long-standing StephenSondheim fan. His music and lyrics are second to none andfrom the instant you hear the first few notes of a song fromJennie Gray Connard, Directorany of his long list of works, you know it’s his. My very firstintroduction to Stephen Sondheim was A Little Night Music.I must have been somewhere between 8 and 10 years old and it was one of the manymusicals my family would listen to during “Saturday cleaning” day. There was somethingso special about the music and the way it moved and ebbed and flowed that just struckme, even at such a young age. When I was 11 years old I was so fortunate to get to see my oldest cousin, who Icompletely idolized, playing the part of Fredrika in a production in Los Angeles. Seeingthe music come to life was fantastic! I was mesmerized by its elegance and beauty.I’m sure I didn’t understand the adult themes both complex and simple but it didn’tmatter, the music and the brilliance ofthe story and how it intertwined so manycharacters thoroughly entertained me.I feel incredibly blessed to get to directthis show at Coronado Playhouse. Thistheatre has been like a second hometo me for many years and the staff andboard have entrusted me with somefabulous pieces of theatrical works butI think this will be my favorite. My mostrecent endeavors have been, fun, funny, irreverent and downright naughty. I’mthrilled to share this lovely story filled withfamily, love, lust, humor, heartache andhappy endings. Please sit back and relax and let themusic wash over you.Get social with oplayhouse
