In the Franz Xaver Grubermemorial house in Hochburg-Ach, thelife of a poor family of linen weavers isappreciable at the time of the Napoleonic wars.A tour on the Franz Xaver Gruber peace path makes the timeless content ofthe song “Silent Night” perceptible.Stations are available for each verse ofthe song, as well as for the worldwidedissemination of its message of peaceon all continents. In contrast are thedetails of the troubled times in which“Silent Night” has its origin. On an inspiring walk through all continents,the peace path as a meditative journeyto inner peace can be experienced allyear round. At the end, take a visit tothe parish church with the “Franz Xaver Gruber Memorial Organ”.Day 2Ried im Innkreis – here in 1806 FranzXaver Gruber completed his apprenticeship. As in many cities of the Innviertel region, the centre of Ried ischaracterised by typical Bavarian Barock facades. Not until 1779, did Riedand the Innviertel come to Upper Austria. In Napoleonic times, it changedhands several times between Bavariaand Upper Austria.Hochburg-Ach – peace pathAlso the path to Ried was full of tribul ations w hich the cr ib fr om theOberndorf parish church took. Afterthe demolition of the Church, it firstwent into an attic and then into the collection of the vicar Johann Veichtlbauer. He donated these objects to thetown of Ried in 1933. And so it happensthat the old crib, before which theworld's most famous Christmas Carolwas sung for the first time, can todaybe seen in the Innviertler FolkloreHouse in Ried.Day 3Steyr – during the Advent time the Silent Night journey to Steyr ends at the1st Austrian Christmas Museum. When youvisit the Local History Museum in theWidumspfiste you will discover theworld's largest known Silent Nightrecord collection. Many of the recordscan still be listened to, and additionally one can learn more about the Zillertal national singers and the organbuilder Carl Mauracher, old crafts andmining in Fügen/Fügenberg.Achensee – SixenhofDay 1Fügen – home of the Ur-Rainer Singers. In the Baroque Chateau of Fügenin the 18 th Century lived the Major andChamberlain Count Ludwig von Dönhof f (1769-18 38). To enter tain hisguests, the Emperor Franz I and CzarAlexander I, he organised one eveningan appearance of the Ur-Rainer singerfamily - Maria, Felix, Franz, Anton andJoseph Rainer - from Fügen. According to oral tradition, they sang thesong “Silent Night! Holy Night!” amongother songs. The songs delighted thecelebrity guests so much that fromthen on the Ur-Rainer singers wereable to perform in many European cities and at the noblest princely courts,among them also before King GeorgeIV of England. Just a few steps besidethe Fügen Palace, in the graveyard ofthe parish church, a monument to the8 silent-night.comHippach – residence of the Strasserfamily. The four siblings of the Strasser family singers - Anna, Joseph,Amalia and Karolina - grew up in Hippach, more specifically in Laimach, ahamlet of Hippach. From here, thefour singers travelled and spread thesong “Silent Night! Holy Night!” TheStrasser House, their bir th housefrom the 18 th Century still stands today. It is a Zillertal farmhouse builtentirely from wood with smoke-stained wood beams, an old loungewith a barrel oven and sash and doorhinges. The grade II listed farmhousetells a lot about the austere life of theZillertal farmers in the past that carried the song “Silent Night! HolyNight!” out into the world. But there isalso a lot to discover there about thehistory of the most famous Christmassong.Day 2Achensee – home of Ludwig Rainer.When Ludwig Rainer, son of Maria Rainer from the Ur-Rainer, came back toAustria with his group from Americaand Russia, he built the Hotel Seehofat the Achensee in 1869, which laterburned down in 1900. The hotel, equip-ped with all comfor ts, at tr actedguests from all over the world andwas his home from then on. Accordingly, one embarks on the trail ofLudwig Rainer in Achensee. Additionally, the Lake Chapel with its altar inthe neo-Gothic style at the AchenseeLake was built by national singer Ludwig Rainer and after his death in 1893;he was buried gracefully in Achenkirch. During a visit to the “Sixenhof”in Achenkirch, the local history museum, you can get interesting historicalinsights such as on a clothing chest ofLudwig Rainer. Creation, Message and Commerce.” On show, among other things,there is the original autograph by Joseph Mohr.
