Pathology Newsletter2014-2015DR. LISA DIXONASSOCIATE DEAN FORGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATIONLisa Dixon, M.D., has been appointed ournew associate dean for graduate medicaleducation. Dr. Dixon replaces Dr. MichaelMahla, who has served as associate deanfor graduate medical education since2011. During that time, numerousadvances have been made in graduatemedical education efforts, including thedevelopment of a housestaff quality andpatient safety committee.Dr. Dixon has been a faculty member intheDepartmentofPathology,Immunology and Laboratory Medicinesince 2005, and during that time, she hasbeen heavily involved in our graduatemedical education program. Currently,she serves as director of the pathologyresidency program and director of theResident as Teacher program. She alsoserves on the Graduate Medical EducationCommittee and its Internal ReviewSubcommittee.Dr. Dixon earned her medical degree atthe University of South Carolina. Shecompleted an internship in pediatrics anda residency in anatomic and clinicalpathology at the University of TennesseeMedical Center. After completing herresidency, she joined UF in 2004 as anadjunct clinical postdoctoral associate.During her time at UF, Dr. Dixon hasearned honors such as being named oneof the college’s Exemplary Teachers in2012, and has published articles in peerreviewed journals on research related togastrointestinal and liver pathology. Shealso currently serves as vice chair of thePathology Residency Organization ofDirectors Council.In her new role as associate dean ofgraduate medical education, Dr. Dixon hasseveral key goals. She hopes to increaseprofessional development opportunitiesfor residency program directors, thosewho dedicate their time to shaping thefuture of tomorrow’s doctors and helpingdetermine how they will practicemedicine. She also hopes to lead al training in ation instills an appreciation ofwhat other professionals have to offer sothat we can work together as teams toprovide the best care to our patients.Congratulations, Dr. Dixon, on your newrole as associate dean!

CHRISTOPHER CARTERASSOCIATE RESIDENCYPROGRAM DIRECTORWe are thrilled to announce Dr.Christopher Carter as associate residencyprogram director after Dr. Craig Fletcherleft UF Health to take a position atBeaumont Health in Michigan. Dr.Christopher Carter joined the departmentin 2007 first as a resident and then as afellow in Hematopathology. He continuedas a clinical assistant professor focusingon Hematopathology and surgicalpathology, with particular interests inbreast, genitourinary and pulmonarypathology. Dr. Carter is known for hisability to be a team player and has showncommendable leadership skills. Wewelcome him to his new role and areeager to see the residency flourish underhis leadership.DR. DAVID GONZALOGI FELLOWSHIP ASSOCIATEDIRECTORAmongst other faculty members joiningto enrich our experience at UF, Dr. DavidGonzalo assumed the position of GIfellowship associate director in July 2014after joining the Department in July 2013.He completed his fellowship inGastrointestinal,HepaticandPancreatobiliary Pathology at theCleveland Clinic. Prior to that, hecompleted anatomic pathology residencyat Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocio(Sevilla,Spain) followed by secondpathology residency in Cleveland Clinic,Ohio. He has particular interests in thefieldsofGastrointestinal,Liver,Pancreatobiliary as well as Breastpathology. He is intimately involved inresident education and is a great teacherand mentor. We value his contributions toresident education and look forward togreat things from him.

SAMER AL-QURANNEW SURGICAL PATHOLOGYFELLOWSHIP DIRECTORWe all stand united in thanking Dr. Reithfor his unwavering service andcommitment as he steps down from hisposition as the AP Director to focus onother commitments and we welcome Dr.Al-Quran as the new Director ofAnatomic Pathology. Dr. Reith served asthe Director of Anatomic Pathology from2010 to 2014.Dr. Al-Quran has been with theDepartment since 1998, starting as aresident, after which he completed afellowship in Surgical Oncology at MDAnderson. After completing furtherfellowships in Hematopathology andSurgical Pathology, he joined our facultyin 2006 and since then has been veryproductive and has received severalhonors. He is currently involved in GU,Breast, ENT pathology as well asHematopathology. Dr. Al-Quran is anideal faculty mentor for dealing with thecontinual improvement, innovation andadvancement of Anatomic Pathologyand we look forward to his continuedsuccess in this role.Ambition is the path to success. Pathology NewsletterNEW FACULTY MEMBERSDr. Jesse Lee Kresak2014-2015By Vatsal Pateljoins our department after completing theNeuropathology fellowship in our department. She attended USF for medical school andAP residency. Afterwards, she came to UF for her Neuropathology training and electedto stay on as faculty. When she isn’t finding microvascular proliferation and red deadneurons, she stays busy on the GI Pathology service as well. She has several researchcollaborations with the Department of Neurosurgery. In her spare time, she likes tospend time with her family (3 boys husband), baseball, car racing, and exploringFlorida’s natural parks and waterways.Dr. Stacy Bealjoined the department as an Assistant Professor in 2014. Sheattended the University of Texas (hook’em) for her undergraduate education andreceived her MD from the University of Florida in 2009. She finished her CP residency atBaylor University in Dallas, TX. Afterwards, she went on to do a Clinical MicrobiologyFellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2013. She served asthe medical director of the Microbiology laboratories at Baylor University MedicalCenter before returning back to Gainesville, FL to serve as the Associate MedicalDirector of the Microbiology Laboratory at UF Health. She enjoys spending time withher husband, who is on faculty with the Dept. of Ophthalmology, and enjoys snorkeling,scuba diving, cooking, sewing, electronic scrapbooking, and riding the tandem bike withher husband.Dr. Pelletieris our new director of the transfusion service and joined ourdepartment as associate professor in August 2014. He attended the University ofConnecticut for undergraduate education and received his MD from the ChicagoMedical School in 1991. Before doing a pathology residency, Dr. Pelletier completed aninternal medicine residency and practiced internal medicine at Tinker Air Force Base inOklahoma. He then completed an AP/CP residency and with the Air Force andcompleted a fellowship in transfusion medicine in 2005 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Hecontinued to serve in the Air Force afterwards as Commander of the 959th MedicalOperation Squadron at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio Texas. He is now at UFHealth serving as the director of the transfusion service. Dr. Pelletier enjoys hiking,biking, swimming, gardening, camping, reading and amateur astronomy.

Pathology Newsletter2014-2015Dr. Faisal Mukhtar joined us as associate director of transfusion medicine in2015. He completed his medical training in Pakistan in 2000 and attended HowardUniversity to complete his AP/CP residency in 2009. Afterwards, he completedfellowships in surgical pathology, cytopathology, and transfusion medicine at theUniversity of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). From 2012-2015, he was thedirector of the transfusion service at Howard University before arriving at UF Healthin 2015, where he will serve as Assistant Professor of Pathology and work with Dr.Pelletier on the transfusion service. Dr. Mukhtar enjoys badminton, hiking, tracking,and table tennis.Dr. Petr Starostikjoined as the director of molecular pathology lab forUniversity of Florida Health Pathology Laboratories in 2014. He earned his medicaldegree in 1984 from the Vienna University School of Medicine in Vienna, Austria. Hecompleted a fellowship in Hematopathology in 1997 at the University of Texas MDAnderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, following his 1995 residency training inlaboratory medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis,MO. He then founded a molecular diagnostics laboratory at the Institute ofPathology of the Wuerzburg University in Wuerzburg, Germany, in 1997. He was thedirector of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Roswell Park CancerInstitute Center for Personalized Medicine in Buffalo, N.Y., beginning in 2002. Dr.Starostik is board-certified in Hematopathology, as well as Clinical and MolecularGenetic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Throughout his career, Dr.Starostik has authored more than 80 journal articles, abstracts, book chapters andother publications on NGS, and he has been an active member of severalprofessional organizations, including the Association for Molecular Pathology; theAmerican Association for Cancer Research; and the American Society ofHematology.

Pathology Newsletter2014-2015Dr. Dara Wakefieldjoined UF as a new faculty for medical renal pathologyand the VA for general surgical pathology and Hematopathology in 2014. She isoriginally from Double Springs, Alabama. She graduated Summa Cum Laude inBiomedical sciences from Auburn University. She had a split residency with two yearsat University of Alabama, Birmingham and then completed her pathology residency atthe University of Florida. Afterward, Dara enjoyed a Hematopathology fellowship atUAB, then decided to return to UF to pursue additional fellowship training in bothSurgical Pathology and Medical Renal. She is board certified in AP/CP andHematopathology. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, andeating Krispy Creme donuts.Dr. Felipe Solanoholds certificates from the American Board of Pathology inAnatomical and Clinical pathology, and Cytopathology. Currently, he works as ananatomical pathologist at the Veterans Hospital Malcom Randall Medical Center. Hisfirst job post-fellowship training was in Augusta, Georgia, where he worked as anassistant professor. He is originally from Colombia, South America, where hecompleted his medical school at the “Universidad de Antioquia” after obtaining aBachelor in Science. He then spent time as a young research fellow in virology andprimary immunodeficiency’s labs, and later joined the workforce as a researcher on animmunogenetic lab at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He finished acombined anatomical and clinical pathology residency at the University of TexasHealth Science Center, San Antonio. He completed a full year of cytopathologyfellowship under the direction of Dr. Edward Wilkinson, and a partial year of surgicalpathology fellowship under the direction of Dr. John Reith at UF. His most rewardingrotation in pathology during residency training has been at the MD Anderson,Houston, Texas.

Pathology NewsletterFIRST YEAR RESIDENTS2014-20152013-2014Naziheh Assarzadeganis originally from Esfahan, Iran andgraduated from Shahr-E-Kord University of Medical Sciences in Iranin 2009. She worked as a research fellow at Mount SinaiHospital, University of Toronto and St. John’s, NewfoundlandMemorial University from 2010 to 2014 during which she was quiteprolific. After this she joined us at UF as a resident. She is interestedin Gastrointestinal and Bone and Soft tissue pathology. Herextracurricular activities include traveling, playing volleyball, solvingJigsaw puzzles, Persian calligraphy and obviously shopping.Jim Sikorais from Vancleave, MS, attended undergrad at theUniversity of South Alabama and graduated with a BS in biomedicalsciences. He proceeded to get an MPH in Epidemiology from theUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham. He then went to medicalschool at Tulane University and the University of Miami. He joined usat UF in Pathology after completing 2 years at University of Miami inAnesthesia. He is interested in laboratory management, blood bank,and GU pathology. His hobbies include auto racing, cooking, running,and being a Dad.Wesley Hiseris from Lincoln, Nebraska. He completed his BS atNebraska Wesleyan University in Biochemistry and Molecular Biologyin 2010 and graduated from University of Nebraska Medical Centerin 2014. He joined us at UF and is interested in GYN Pathology,Bone/Soft Tissue Pathology and Microbiology. He likes to run, readand loves board games. He is expecting his first child with wife Ashleyin May.Jorge Trejo-Lopezis from Jacksonville, FL and completed hisundergrad in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame afterwhich he returned to his home state for medical school and residencyat UF. He is interested in Surgical Pathology and loves to walk theGainesville trails and preserves, visit the beach, and spend time withhis family.

Pathology NewsletterCURRENT FELLOWS2014-2015by Eva VertesDr. Ahmad Alkhasawneh is originally from Amman, Jordan. Afterreceiving his MD from the University of Jordan, he came to UF for hisresidency in Pathology. He stayed on at UF to complete a fellowship inHematopathology, followed by a fellowship in Gastrointestinalpathology. In his spare time, he enjoys playing table tennis andreading.Dr. Bret Huber is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He completedhis undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin and thenreceived his D.O. from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine(LECOM). He then came to UF for residency in Pathology and stayedon to complete a fellowship in Hematopathology. He has a 2-year olddaughter, Leona, and a newborn, Layton. He has many hobbies,including hiking, camping, fishing, running, biking, cooking, going tomovies/theater/concerts, NCAA football and, of course, the Packers.Dr. Brian Stewart is originally from Ocala. He did his undergraduatedegree in Spanish at the University of Florida and then went on tomedical school at Tulane in New Orleans. He did pathology residencyand a surgical pathology fellowship at University of Texas in Houstonand then returned to the University of Florida for a fellowship in boneand soft tissue pathology. He will be moving to St. Augustine to joinPantaleon Pathology Associates at Flagler Hospital. His hobbiesinclude gardening, running, kayaking, yoga, reading, camping andwatching soccer.Dr. Ethan Stoll is originally from Columbus, OH. He did hisundergraduate in psychology at Ohio Dominican University,completed a masters degree in human anatomy at Wright StateUniversity in Dayton, OH and then went on to complete a D.O. degreefrom Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) inBradenton, FL. He came to the University of Florida for his residency inpathology and stayed on to complete a fellowship in surgicalpathology. His interests include surgical pathology fishing, biking,tennis and watching "The Walking Dead". He will be staying on as anassistant professor at University of Florida next year.

She went tocollege at the University of Rochester, where she majored in Biologyand then went on to medical school at the University of North Carolinaat Chapel Hill. She came to the University of Florida for residency inpathology and stayed on for a fellowship in Surgical Pathology with afocus in ENT and research. She has 3 kids, Abigail, Mia and Henry andloves spending time with her family!Dr. Matthew Martelli is originally from Lexington, Kentucky. He got aBS in biology from The University of the South and then went tomedical school at the University of Kentucky. Following medical school,he came to UF for his residency and stayed on to complete a fellowshipin gastrointestinal pathology. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting,fishing, and has been on several medical mission trips. He is moving toMeridian, Mississippi to practice general AP/CP pathology as part of arural regional health system.Dr. Sarah Tinsley did her undergraduate at the University of Rochesterand then went on to complete medical school at the University ofBuffalo. She then moved to Orlando to do her residency in Pathology atOrlando Regional Health. She came to UF to do a fellowship incytopathology. She loves music and played the violin throughoutcollege. As well, in her spare time, she enjoys traveling to places ofhistorical interest.

Pathology NewsletterGUEST SPEAKERS 2014-2015Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery is aprofessor of pathology at theJohn Hopkins School ofMedicine where she directs theDivision of ClinicalGastrointestinalPathologyservice. She is board certified in y. She has been on the JohnsHopkins faculty since 1999. She is author ofnumerous articles and textbooks ongastrointestinal pathology and has extensiveexperience in evaluation of mucosal biopsiesin general and Barrett’s esophagus inparticular. In addition, she has publishedmany primary soft tissue articles and a softtissue textbook.Dr. Montgomery completed her M.D. degreeat George Washington University in 1984.Following her medical school, she completedher AP/CP training at Walter Reed ArmyMedical Center in 1988. She became amember of the Soft Tissue PathologyDepartment of the Armed Forces Institute ofPathology, where she was on theconsultation staff until assuming a positionat Georgetown University in 1992. AtGeorgetown, she worked with theOrthopedic Surgery staff to develop thesarcoma service. During this time, she alsoheld a joint appointment in the DepartmentofGastroenterologyandgainedconsiderable expertise in gastrointestinalpathology. She has lectured nationally andinternationally and published widely in bothdisciplines. She participated in the WHO SoftTissue Classification (2002), which includedtwo new entities for which she wrote thedefining papers. She works closely with thesarcoma team at Johns Hopkins to care forthese complicated patients.2014-2015By JT KimHer research interests include severaltopics in gastrointestinal pathology,especially Barrett esophagus. Additionally,she has studied soft tissue pathologyincluding telomeres in translocationassociated sarcomas compared tochromosome unstable types.At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Montgomerycollaborates with Dr. Arlene Forastiere andDr. Elisabeth Heath in the Department ofMedical Oncology and with Dr. MarciaCanto in the division of Gastroenterologyon Barrett's esophagus clinical trials.Dr. John R Goldblum hasserved as the Chairman of theDepartment of Pathologysince 2002. He received hisundergraduate and medicaldegrees from the University of Michigan,where he also pursued a residency inanatomic pathology and fellowship insurgical pathology with a focus on both GIand soft tissue pathology under thetutelage of Drs. Henry Appelman andSharon Weiss. Dr. Goldblum joined theCleveland Clinic in 1993 and has expertisein GI and soft tissue pathology. He has coauthoredover300peer-reviewedpublications and serves as the author oreditor for major surgical pathologytextbooks including Enzinger and Weiss’sSoft Tissue Tumors (4th, 5th and 6theditions) and Surgical Pathology of the GITract, Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas (1st,2nd and 3rd editions). He will give a2014-2015departmental lecture titled “Mad Cows,Wasted Deer, and Public Health" on June5th. A keynote presentation, “IsAlzheimer’s a Prion Disease, will also begiven at the Research Symposium on June6th. We are looking forward to having Dr.Cohen visit our department.Dr. Cohen received his medical degree fromthe Cornell University Medical College in1983, completed internship in 1983 andtrained in anatomic and clinical pathologyat the University Hospitals of Cleveland in1984-1988.After his residency, hecompleted a fellowship in Neuropathologyas well. Dr. Cohen joined the faculty of theUniversity Hospitals of Cleveland, CaseWestern Reserve University in 1990 andhas served as Director of NeuropathologyDivision (1988-present) during his tenure.He is board certified in ogy.Dr. Cohen's research interests include priondiseases, gliomas, and neuromusculardiseases.Dr. Cohen has authorednumerous peer reviewed publications andserves as a officer and secretary-treasurerfor the American Association ofNeuropathologists. Subspecialty: Hepatobiliary Pathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology Assistant Professor of Pathology Dr. Kiyoko Oshima is the Director of Clinical Hepatic Pathology and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital University School of Medicine. She joined the Hopkins faculty in 2017.
