EnglishSafety Precautions andWorking TechniquesBecause a trimmer /brushcutter is a highspeed, fast-cutting powertool sometimes equippedwith sharp cutting blades, special safety precautions must be observed toreduce the risk of personal injury. It is important that youread, fully understandand observe the followingsafety precautions andwarnings. Read theinstruction manual andthe safety precautionsperiodically. Careless orimproper use may causeserious or fatal injury. The terminology utilized in this manualwhen referring to the power tool reflectsthe fact that different types of cuttingattachments may be mounted on it. Theterm "trimmer" is used to designate anFS unit that is equipped with a nylon linehead or a head with flexible plasticblades (i.e., the PolyCut head). A"brushcutter" designates a unitequipped with a rigid metal blade. ManyFS models may be used as either atrimmer or a brushcutter – therefore, thepower tool is referred in this manual as a"trimmer / brushcutter." Some smallerand / or lightweight FS models may onlybe used as a trimmer, i.e., they may notbe used with metal blades.2The term "clearing saw" indicates ahigh-powered trimmer / brushcutter thatis particularly suited for use with acircular saw blade to clear saplings orsmall trees.FS models with an "R" on the nameplatewere originally configured (at the time ofdistribution) as a trimmer with a loophandle.Warning! As more fully explained later in theseSafety Precautions, to reduce the risk ofpersonal injury, make sure your unit isequipped with the proper handle, harness and deflector for the type of cuttingattachment you are using. Use only cutting attachments that are specificallyauthorized by STIHL for use on your FSmodel.Have your STIHL dealer show you howto operate your power tool. Observe allapplicable local safety regulations, standards and ordinances.Warning!Do not lend or rent your power tool without the instruction manual. Be sure thatanyone using it understands the information contained in this manual.Warning! The use of this machine may be hazardous. If the rotating line or blade comes incontact with your body, it will cut you. When it comes in contact with solid foreign objects such as rocks or bits ofmetal, it may fling them directly or by ricochet in the direction of bystanders orthe operator. Striking such objects coulddamage the cutting attachment and maycause blades to crack, chip or break.Thrown objects, including broken headsor blades, may result in serious or fatalinjury to the operator or bystanders.STIHL does not recommend the use ofrigid blades when cutting in stony areas.Use your trimmer / brushcutter equippedwith the appropriate cutting attachmentonly for cutting grass, brush, wood andsimilar material.Warning!Do not use it for other purposes, sincemisuse may result in personal injury orproperty damage, including damage tothe machine.Warning!Minors should never be allowed to usethis power tool. Bystanders, especiallychildren, and animals should not beallowed in the area where it is in use.Trimmer and Brushcutter Safety Manual

EnglishWarning! To reduce the risk of injury to bystanders and damage to property, never letyour power tool run unattended. When itis not in use (e.g. during a work break),shut it off and make sure that unauthorized persons do not use it.Most of these safety precautions andwarnings apply to the use of all STIHLtrimmers / brushcutters. Differentmodels may have different parts andcontrols. See the appropriate section ofyour instruction manual for a descriptionof the controls and the function of theparts of your model.Safe use of a trimmer / brushcutterinvolves1.the operator2.the power tool3.the use of the power tool.THE OPERATORPhysical ConditionYou must be in good physical conditionand mental health and not under theinfluence of any substance (drugs, alcohol, etc.) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgment. Do not operatethis machine when you are fatigued.Trimmer and Brushcutter Safety Manual–Most STIHL power tools areavailable with an anti-vibration("AV") system designed to reducethe transmission of vibrationscreated by the machine to theoperator's hands. An AV system isrecommended for those personsusing power tools on a regular orsustained basis.–Wear gloves and keep your handswarm.–Keep the AV system wellmaintained. A power tool with loosecomponents or with damaged orworn AV elements will tend to havehigher vibration levels.–Maintain a firm grip at all times, butdo not squeeze the handles withconstant, excessive pressure. Takefrequent breaks.Warning!Be alert – if you get tired, take a break.Tiredness may result in loss of control.Working with any power tool can bestrenuous. If you have any conditionthat might be aggravated by strenuouswork, check with your doctor beforeoperating this machine.Warning!Prolonged use of a power tool (or othermachines) exposing the operator tovibrations may produce whitefinger disease (Raynaud's phenomenon) orcarpal tunnel syndrome. These conditions reduce the hand'sability to feel and regulate temperature, produce numbness and burningsensations and may cause nerve andcirculation damage and tissue necrosis. All factors which contribute towhitefinger disease are not known, butcold weather, smoking and diseases orphysical conditions that affect bloodvessels and blood transport, as well ashigh vibration levels and long periods ofexposure to vibration are mentioned asfactors in the development of whitefingerdisease. In order to reduce the risk ofwhitefinger disease and carpal tunnelsyndrome, please note the following:All the above-mentioned precautions donot guarantee that you will not sustainwhitefinger disease or carpal tunnelsyndrome. Therefore, continual andregular users should closely monitor thecondition of their hands and fingers. Ifany of the above symptoms appear, seek medical advice immediately.Warning! The ignition system of the STIHL unitproduces an electromagnetic field of avery low intensity. This field may interfere with some pacemakers. To reducethe risk of serious or fatal injury, personswith a pacemaker should consult theirphysician and the pacemaker manufacturer before operating this tool.3

EnglishProper ClothingTo reduce the risk of injury, the operatorshould wear proper protective apparel.Warning! The deflector provided with your powertool will not protect the operator from allforeign objects (gravel, glass, wire, etc.)thrown back by the rotating cuttingattachment. Thrown objects may alsoricochet and strike the operator.Warning! To reduce the risk ofinjury to your eyes neveroperate your power toolunless wearing gogglesor properly fitted protective glasses withadequate top and side protection complying with ANSI Z 87.1 (or yourapplicable national standard). Toreduce the risk of injury to your faceSTIHL recommends that you also weara face shield or face screen over yourgoggles or protective glasses.Wear an approved safety hard hat toreduce the risk of injury to your headwhen there is a danger of head injuries.Power tool noise may damage yourhearing. Wear sound barriers (ear plugsor ear mufflers) to protect your hearing.Continual and regular users shouldhave their hearing checked regularly.Be particularly alert and cautious whenwearing hearing protection becauseyour ability to hear warnings (shouts, alarms, etc.) is restricted.4Always wear gloveswhen handling themachine and metalblades. Heavy-duty, nonslip gloves improve yourgrip and help to protectyour hands.Clothing must be sturdyand snug-fitting, but allowcomplete freedom ofmovement. Wear longpants made of heavymaterial to help protectyour legs. Do not wearshorts, sandals or gobarefoot.Avoid loose-fitting jackets, scarfs, neckties, jewelry, flared or cuffed pants, unconfined long hair or anything thatcould become caught on branches, brush or the moving parts of the unit.Secure hair so it is above shoulder level.Good footing is veryimportant. Wear sturdyboots with nonslip soles.Steel-toed safety bootsare recommended.THE POWER TOOLFor illustrations and definitions of thepower tool parts see the chapter on"Main Parts."Warning!Never modify this power tool in any way.Only attachments supplied by STIHLand expressly approved by STIHL foruse with the specific STIHL model areauthorized. Although certain unauthorized attachments are useable withSTIHL power tools, their use may, infact, be extremely dangerous. For thecutting attachments authorized bySTIHL for your unit, see the chapter"Approved Combinations of CuttingAttachment, Deflector, Handle and Harness" in the instruction manual or theSTIHL "Cutting Attachments, Parts &Accessories" catalog. If this tool is subjected to unusually highloads for which it was not designed (e.g.heavy impact or a fall), always checkthat it is in good condition beforecontinuing work. Check in particular thatthe fuel system is tight (no leaks) andthat the controls and safety devices areworking properly. Do not continueoperating this machine if it is damaged. In case of doubt, have it checked by yourSTIHL servicing dealer.THE USE OF THE POWER TOOLTransporting the Power ToolWarning! To reduce the risk of injury from loss ofcontrol and blade or line contact, nevercarry or transport your power tool withthe cutting attachment moving.Trimmer and Brushcutter Safety Manual

EnglishWarning! It may be carried only in a horizontalposition. Grip the shaft in a manner thatthe machine is balanced horizontally.Keep the hot muffler away from yourbody and the cutting attachment behindyou.Warning!Always shut off the engine and makesure the cutting attachment has stoppedbefore putting a trimmer / brushcutterdown. When transporting it in a vehicle, properly secure it to prevent turnover, fuel spillage and damage to the unit.STIHL recommends that you keepmetal blades covered with the transportguard (optional accessory).FuelYour STIHL power tool uses an oilgasoline mixture for fuel (see thechapter on "Fuel" of your instructionmanual).Trimmer and Brushcutter Safety ManualFueling InstructionsWarning! To reduce the risk of serious injury fromburns, never attempt to refuel the unituntil it has been completely removedfrom the operator.Warning!Check for fuel leakagewhile refueling and during operation. If fuelleakage is found, do notstart or run the engineuntil the leak is fixed andany spilled fuel has been wiped away.Take care not to get fuel on your clothing. If this happens, change yourclothing immediately.Different models may be equipped withdifferent fuel caps.Toolless cap with gripWarning!Warning!Fuel your power tool in well-ventilatedareas, outdoors. Always shut off theengine and allow it to cool before refueling. Gasoline vapor pressure maybuild up inside the fuel tank dependingon the fuel used, the weather conditionsand the tank venting system. In order to reduce the risk of burns andother personal injury from escaping gasvapor and fumes, remove the fuel fillercap on your power tool carefully so as toallow any pressure build-up in the tankto release slowly. Never remove the fuelfiller cap while the engine is running. In order to reduce the risk of fuel spillage and fire from an improperlytightened fuel cap, correctly positionand tighten the fuel cap in the fuel tankopening.001BA220 KN389BA019 KNGasoline is an extremelyflammable fuel. If spilledand ignited by a spark orother ignition source, itcan cause fire and serious burn injury orproperty damage. Use extreme cautionwhen handling gasoline or fuel mix. Donot smoke or bring any fire or flame nearthe fuel or the power tool. Note thatcombustible fuel vapor may escapefrom the fuel system.Select bare ground for fueling and moveat least 10 feet (3 m) from the fuelingspot before starting the engine. Wipe offany spilled fuel before starting yourmachine. To do this with this STIHL cap, raise thegrip on the top of the cap until it is uprightat a 90 angle. Insert the cap in the fueltank opening with the raised positioning5

EnglishScrew Capmarks on the grip of the cap and on thefuel tank opening lining up. Using thegrip, press the cap down firmly whileturning it clockwise as far as it will go(approx. 1/4 turn).001BA227 KNLeft:Right:If the cap does not drop fully into theopening when the positioning marksline up and/or if the cap does nottighten properly when twisted, thebase of the cap may be prematurelyrotated (vis-à-vis the top) to theclosed position. Such misalignmentcan result from handling, cleaningor an improper attempt attightening.See also the "Fueling" chapter in yourInstruction Manual for additionalinformation.Warning!NN6Unit vibrations can causean improperly tightenedfuel filler cap to loosen orcome off and spill quantities of fuel. In order toreduce the risk of fuelspillage and fire, tighten the fuel fillercap by hand as securely as possible. Before StartingMisaligned, damaged or broken capNBase of cap in closed position (with open space)Base of cap correctly positioned for installation001BA226 KNFold the grip flush withthe top of the cap. Gripthe cap and check fortightness. If the grip doesnot lie completely flushwith the cap and thedetent on the grip doesnot fit in the corresponding recess in the filleropening, or if the cap isloose in the filler opening, the cap is not properlyseated and tightened andyou must repeat theabove steps.Warning! To return the cap to the openposition for installation, turn the cap(with the grip up) until it drops fullyinto the tank opening. Next, twist thecap counterclockwise as far as it willgo (approx. 1/4 turn) – this will twistthe base of the cap into the correctposition. Then, twist the capclockwise, closing it normally. If your cap still does not tightenproperly, it may be damaged orbroken; immediately stop use of theunit and take it to your authorizedSTIHL dealer for repair.Always check your power tool for propercondition and operation before starting, particularly the throttle trigger, throttletrigger lockout, slide control / stopswitch, cutting attachment, deflectorand harness. The throttle trigger mustmove freely and always spring back tothe idle position. Never attempt to modify the controls or safety devices.Warning!Never operate your power tool if it isdamaged, improperly adjusted or maintained, or not completely or securelyassembled.Trimmer and Brushcutter Safety Manual

EnglishWarning! The cutting attachment must be properly tightened and in safe operatingcondition. Inspect for loose parts (nuts, screws, etc.) and for cracked or damaged heads or cracked, bent, warped ordamaged blades. Replace damagedheads or blades before using the powertool. Always keep blades sharp.Keep the handles clean and dry at alltimes; it is particularly important to keepthem free of moisture, pitch, oil, fuel mix, grease or resin in order for you tomaintain a firm grip and properly controlyour power tool.Warning!Check that the spark plug boot issecurely mounted on the spark plug – aloose boot may cause arcing that couldignite combustible fumes and cause afire. To reduce the riskof personal injuryto the operatorfrom blade or linecontact andthrown objects, make sure your unit isequipped with the proper deflector, handle and harness for the type of cuttingattachment being used (see chart in thechapter on "Approved Combinations ofCutting Attachment, Deflector, Handleand Harness").As can be seen in that chart, somecutting attachments may require you tochange your deflector, handle and / orharness.Keep the deflector (and the attachedskirt where appropriate) adjustedproperly at all times (see chapters on"Mounting the Deflector" and "Mountingthe Cutting Attachment" of yourinstruction manual).A000BA006 KNDo not attach any cutting attachment toa unit without proper installation of allrequired parts. Failure to use the properparts may cause the blade or head to flyoff and seriously injure the operator orbystanders.Warning!B000BA007 KNWarning!Arrows on the deflector (A) and limitstop (B) (as seen from the underside)show the correct direction of rotation ofthe cutting attachment. When viewedfrom above, however, the cuttingattachment rotates counterclockwise.Adjust carrying harness and hand grip tosuit your size before starting work. Themachine should be properly balanced asspecified in your instruction manual forproper control and less fatigue inoperation. To be better prepared in caseof an emergency, practice releasing theunit from the harness as quickly aspossible.StartingStart the engine at least 10 feet (3 m)from the fueling spot, outdoors only. For specific starting instructions, see theappropriate section of your manual.Place the power tool on firm ground orTrimmer and Brushcutter Safety Manual7

EnglishTo reduce the risk of injury from blade orline contact, be absolutely sure that thecutting attachment is clear of you and allother obstructions and objects, including the ground, because when theengine starts at starting-throttle, enginespeed will be fast enough for the clutchto engage and move the cuttingattachment.Once the engine has started, immediately blip the throttle trigger, which should release the starting throttleand allow the engine to slow down toidle. With the engine running only at idle, attach the power tool to the spring hookof your harness (see appropriatechapter of this manual).Warning!Your power tool is a one-personmachine. Do not allow other persons inthe general work area, even whenstarting.Warning! When you pull the starter grip, do notwrap the starter rope around your hand.Do not let the grip snap back, but guidethe starter rope to rewind it properly.Failure to follow this procedure mayresult in injury to your hand or fingersand may damage the startermechanism.Important AdjustmentsHolding and Controlling the PowerTool002BA055 KNWarning!During OperationWarning!Warning! To reduce the risk of personal injuryfrom loss of control or contact with therunning cutting attachment, do not useyour unit with incorrect idle adjustment. At correct idle speed, the cutting attachment should not move. For directions onhow to adjust idle speed, see the appropriate section of your instructionmanual. If you cannot set the correct idle speed, have your STIHL dealer check yourpower tool and make properadjustments and repairs.002BA054 KNother solid surface in an open area.Maintain good balance and securefooting.Always hold the unit firmly with bothhands on the handles while you areworking. Wrap your fingers and thumbsaround the handles, keeping thehandles cradled between your thumband forefinger. Keep your hands in thisposition to have your power tool undercontrol at all times.
