Recording Secretary’sReportCompact Day LuncheonOctober 30, 2016Bellevue Red Lion Inn, Bellevue, WashingtonOur Compact Day Luncheon began at 11:45 am with a socialhour. Members were invited to peruse the sales table for salesbooks and Mayflower items, view displays about the 2017 GSMDHistoric Sites Tour and a list of members who belong to otherheritage societies.Governor Guy Moellendorf called the meeting to order at12:20 pm.Elder Mavis Ratcliff led the Invocation, and Captain NickParrott led the Pledge of Allegiance.Governor Moellendorf introduced former Governors, SteveArnold, Catherine Roberti, Margaret Spangler, and DonWingerson, current Board Officers, and the Board of Assistants.Governor Moellendorf gave a brief summary of the MayflowerCompact and its signers (men). He then did the Ancestor RollCall, noting that in 2007 the list of ancestors was expanded toinclude all ancestors arriving on the Mayflower, including womenand children. There were 58 members, two junior members, and22 guests present. James Chilton had the most descendantspresent (7), and John Alden was second with 6 descendants.Since our speaker’s topic for today was witches, GovernorMoellendorf asked members with ancestors who were witches, judges, accusers, or others involved in witch trials to stand. Moremembers stood than didn’t, demonstrating how profoundly the“witchcraft” hysteriaaffected our ancestorsin New England.Historian JerriMcCoy andCorrespondingSecretary GenieParrott recognized ournew member inattendance, KatherineDoughty (JamesChilton), andpresented her with hermembershipcertificate. LynnPittier, in Pilgrimattire, introduced ourHistorian Jerri McCoy welcomed the one newmember in attendance, Katherine Doughty,Junior Members inby presenting her membership certificate.attendance, CalvinKatherine had also been given a LifePaulson and DinahMembership by her family.Reed, presenting themwith certificates of attendance.Catherine Roberti was presented with the Past Governor’sAward and Badge. Catherine also has 17 supplemental ancestors!Lunch was served at 12:45 pm. Tables were decorated in a falltheme, with gold tablecloths and napkins. Round mirrors werecovered with fall leaves and miniature flags. Food selectionsincluded burgundy beef tips, parmesan crusted chicken, pestochicken penne, and ratatouille, with chocolate cake or cheesecakefor dessert.Following lunch, Deputy Governor Jocelyn Paulson welcomedour guest speaker, Deborah McNally, PhD, Lecturer at theUniversity of Washington on Early American History. Dr.3 EVERGREEN LOGGuest speaker Professor Deborah McNally, left, and Deputy Governor Jocelyn Paulson, whochairs the Program Committee, making speakerand venue arrangements.McNally’s presentation was “The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of1692: Why Salem? Why 1692?”Some points Dr. McNally made were:This was different than previous New England witch hysteriacases.1600 were named, 162 were arrested, and 144-156 were saidto be “in the snare of the devil.”- Conflict with the Native Americans made this an intenselyfearful time. Many families had ties to the isolated frontier in Maine, whichwas experiencing severe Indian troubles.- Colonists who experienced or feared Indian attacks hadsevere anxiety and showed signs of Post Traumatic StressDisorder, PTSD.- Lyme disease and ergot-affected grain poisoning could causesymptoms similar to those attributed to demonic possession.- Family conflicts, disputes with neighbors, misogyny, andreligious disagreements could be to blame. These people wereunder a high degree of stress.- Afflicted and accusers were powerless young women. Beingin the spotlight gave them attention and control which they did nothave otherwise.- Almost everyone believed that witches (and devils anddemons, etc.) were real. It was just part of their religious beliefsystem. The reigning English king at that time, James II, became aCatholic when he married his second wife. He advocated religioustolerance to stop the persecution of Catholics (and others). Hemerged the New England colonies, creating the Dominion of NewEngland. This replaced the religious governments of the Puritansand Separatists, and advocated religious tolerance of Catholics,Quakers, and Baptists. They certainly did not want to toleratethese groups, and did not want to give up their original chartersand freedoms. In 1688, James II was overthrown by his Protestantdaughter, Mary, and her Dutch Protestant husband, William ofOrange (William and Mary). This inspired Massachusettscolonists to rebel against the Dominion and its officials, includingousting Dominion Governor Andros. However, the overthrow ofthe Dominion officials in the Massachusetts Bay Colony didn’twork out as the colonists had hoped. William and Mary refused toreissue the colony’s original charter and instead issued a newcharter in 1691 that merely continued the policies of the Dominionof New England, including restricting religious Puritan-based laws.Needless to say, this created intense strife for the Puritans ofMassachusetts. Governor Winthrop’s “City on a Hill” wasWINTER 2017

Twenty-four Mayflower Descendants attested they have ancestors involved tin the 1692-93 Witch Trials of Salem, Massachusetts.(Continued from page 3)coming to an end. More stress! This was a very litigious society, using courts to resolvedisputes. There were disputes over property lines, grazing rights, and church privileges to name a few. (Salem Village residentswere considered quarrelsome.) When the Colony Charter wassuspended, the courts were also suspended, leaving many issuesunresolved. In October of 1692, as more prominent people were beingaccused, prominent ministers began speaking out. They believedconfessions were being coerced, and spectral evidence was calledinto question.Governor Moellendorf thanked Dr. McNally for her enjoyableand thought-provoking program and presented her with acertificate of appreciation.Bylaws Committee Chair, Margaret Spangler, introduced theBylaws Committee and explained the proposed revisions to theBylaws, Article III. Members were given ballots upon arrival. Itwas moved by Margaret and seconded by Nick Parrott that we putthe revisions to a vote. There were five separate items to approveon the ballot by a yes or no vote: Section 5 – Transfers and DualMemberships; Section 2.c. – Membership Classes; Section 3.b. –Junior Member; Section 3.c. – Life Member; Section 6.b. –Reinstatements.Steve Arnold challenged the ballot vote, which required fiveseparate tallies, and suggested we vote only once with a show ofhands. We could vote yes if we approved all five revisions or no ifwe did not. This was done, and there were two no’s. Everyoneelse voted to approve all five revisions. Motion Passed to AmendBylaws, Article III.
