The F cal PointOf 14!-!Vol.!11,!No.!6Looking back to move forwardBy Izabela KorwelWhen photographers talk about !nding inspiration, quickly two camps form. There arethose who think looking at Masters, as widely de!ned as you want, is a waste of time, and you are better off checking 500px. The other camp suggests you rather look at Cartier-Bresson and Paul Outerbridge than admire Cliff Ratcliff latest HDR.The arguments of the second camp appeal to me more. While I do look at the contemporary work, spending endless hours browsing Flickr or 500px just doesn’t appeal to me. I’drather get a coffee table book of somebody de!ning the photographic medium. There aretwo advantages at looking back, at the established Masters:1. Visual literacy – I take pride in recognizing famous photographs, knowing who shot them. At the same time, I learnabout variety of techniques and styles, seeing slow shutterlandscape photography by Michael Kenna or "owers onwhite background by Irving Penn. Being aware of them,I add them to my visual toolbox and get reference pointwhere I should go exploring to take my photography further. !Izabela!Korwel2. Shot/light ideas – I enjoy learning about subjects, light andother elements of great images, and remembering to lookfor those things when I go out and photograph. I mightuse particular portrait light to shoot a still subject, or lookcloser at the manhole or light in skyscrapers and see howelse it can be represented, take Jay Maisel’s ideas and turnthem into something mine. How about you? Do you !nd valuein looking at photographs of theMasters? Or do you prefer to check500px, sorting through great andsome mundane images? Or do youjust go out, oblivious to all the workdone in photography to this day, doing your own thing?www.linnareaphotoclub.org! !Izabela!Korwelpage!1!of!11

The F cal PointJune!2014!-!Vol.!11,!No.!6May Monthly Meetingby Cherie FlintShowcase Photographer:This month, Bill and Joyce Schoon shared their slide show presentation from their trip to Baja, Mexico. Duringtheir once in a lifetime trip they had an opportunity to capture a variety of birds including blue footed boobys, pelicans and seagulls. They spent some time with a kayak tour and was able to see dolphins. They also sharedimages of the missionaries and buildings in the area they were able to visit while they were dry docked on landwaiting for the weather to clear for their kayak trip.Monthly PresentationKen Boardrow shared his method of preparing photographs to be mailed into to the State Photo Salon. He usesa box with the dimensions of 15-1/8” X 11-1/8” x 4”. Ken has purchased a package of 5 boxes at Staples for about 10.00. Ken wraps the individual photographs in tissue paper to protect the photographs from each other duringshipping. Next, Ken puts the required forms (entry forms, entry fee, return address label, return postage) in aenvelope and ships them using the US postal service. This year’s entries must be postmarked by midnight on Saturday, June 7th. For more information regarding the2014 Iowa State Fair, check out the web site: .pdfThe !nal portion of the presentation was spent critiquing black and white photographs that are being considered for State Fair submissions. Members were able tovoiced their likes and dislikes and provided constructivesuggestions to make the images better.A special thanks goes to the members who submittedimages to be critiqued by fellow club members. It takes aspecial amount of courage to put your images in front ofothers and hear what they like and dislike about it. !Cyd!Grafft !Cyd!Grafftwww.linnareaphotoclub.org!page!4!of!11

We will be shooting Star Trails and wide !eld astrophotography. If it is raining, or if there are solid clouds and/or rain that are predicted past 8-830ish, the rain date for the Astrophotography shoot will be Friday August 1st, same time, same place. Check the website the evening of the shootfor any updates.Suggested equipment to bring:Red "ash light (No white light please)Tripod-Shutter release (cable or wireless)Batteries# With cooler temps and longer shutter times batteries go much quicker than usual. They have cans of soda available for 0.50 but you may want to bring your own snacks.Clothing/shoes/etc: We will be inside for the initial presentation and then outside for viewing/shooting. Nohiking. Indoor kitchen and full rest rooms will be available all night. Despite being July, it can still get chillyafter sun goes down. Lynn would advise against bug spray as it can eat mirror/lens coatings. If really neededyou would need to walk away and downwind of scopes to spray. Try to keep spray off of hands as it will eat offequipment lettering as well.July 19th is a club night for CAA members. We will be sharing the observatory with the club. This is good forLAPC members as there will be plenty of CAA members besides Lynn to help with questions. Lynn says he hasheard nothing but positive reception and excitement from CAA members about this. The Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Center is located at Palisades-Dows Nature Preserve and Observatory on the southeast edge of Palisades-Kepler State Park.
