The Commandant’s CornerBy Admiral Peg Pellerin,Academy CommandantGreetings from the great Halls of Learning,STARFLEET Academy.Well, two years have gone by since I startedmy tenure as you STARFLEET AcademyCommandant. Affirmative, I have only onemore year to go.I came into this positionfilled with anxiety; not knowing if I couldactually do the job. My fears were quelledquickly thanks to the knowledgeable staff thathas helped me out throughout this term. I’vebeen called the Silent ‘Dant because I’m notheard from as often as some of mypredecessors. Those of you, who have cometo know me, know that I speak out when I feelstrongly about something; such as thecheating policy that I worked on along withmy administration in order to make it firm butfair for all members. I took this position toassure that STARFLEET Academy wouldremain as it has always been, the Jewel ofSTARFLEET. If anything else, STARFLEETAcademy is the place where any member canfeel they are active in some way in their fanclub. Some may not consider me a strong leader. Ihave always felt that I’m not here to be pushyand use my position as status quo. Myposition is to listen, hear. I have listened tomany opinions and have based my decisionsupon them. Some of my decisions may nothave been favorable, but they were made forwhat I have felt to be for the good of themembership of STARFLEET.I may not have pleased some of the staff &/ormembers all of the time, but I do hope I havepleased most of the staff &/or members mostof the time. I will continue my final year as‘Dant the same as I have my previous twoyears; to be there for the members ofSTARFLEET. I have and continue to be ableto do this only because I have the best teamin STARFLEET. That team is comprised ofthose I have come to feel as family, thedirectors, deans and administrators ofSTARFLEET Academy. What can I say; STARFLEET Academy is acontinuous working machine. It continues togrow and improve itself. To paraphrase oneof my administrator’s comments to me oneday; STARFLEET Academy’s directors aremaking an extreme effort to enrich theAcademy. I don’t think we’ll ever run out ofsomething for everyone’s interest. If we do,please let us know.Adm. Peg PellerinSFA Have pride in how far you have come. Havefaith in how far you can go. (Motto at WinslowHigh School where I am employed).2

Academy Institute NewsInstitute of Special OperationsBy Admiral Carol ThompsonThe formation of the STAR division Special Operations, sparked the need for training to compliment theactivities of the Units for promotions and certifications.Hence was born the College of Special OperationsTraining (CSOT). It was placed in the Institute ofMilitary Science. This College was quickly followed by the College ofSpecOps Units (CSOU) and the College of SpecOps inMovies (CSOM). With another College in the making, the College of SpecOps Resources (CSOR) it was clearthat SpecOps was going to overwhelm the Star-Trekbased College of Military Science. So, in a brainstorming session between Admiral CarolThompson and Vice Admiral Glen Diebold, it wasdecided to petition Peg and Marlene for a new Instituteto separate the real-life subject matter of SpecialOperations from the Star Trek Military and Security material in the Institute of Military Studies. The verdict was an immediate “Yes,” so Glen, JT (the victim who had to retool the SpecOps webpages), and I began to reshuffle courses between the Colleges and prepare to move the Collegesinto their new Institute, the Institute of Special Operations (IOSO.) The Institute will go LiveJanuary 1, 2010.It was also decided that Glen will take the Deanship of the new IOSO and Carol Thompson will slipinto the deanship of the Institute of Intelligence Operations, replacing Glen in that capacity. Thechange in Deans will be seamless since both Carol and Glen created the IOIE early in 2006.But that is another long story! The material covered in the IOSO is different from that of the Special Operations Branch offeredby the SFMCA. The IOSO covers Special Operations among all armed forces in the US and manyaround the world.Reception to the Special Operations courses has been excellent, and we hope that many moreSTARFLEET members explore the world of Military Special Operations.3

Academy College NewsCollege of HumorBy Fleet Captain Ros HaywoodHumour is just something to do with making you laugh, isn’t it? (including whether to spell it humor or humour). The first course in this new SFA college splits theconcept into separate definitions, sothat when you split your sideslaughing, you know what you’relaughing at. Here, we talk aboutjokes, timing, hyperbole, puns, satire, irony, snowclones, slapstick, caricature, parody, farce, and burlesque. Afuture course still in pre-production investigates humouras it applies to Star Trek – the captains, severalcharacters, and various species. The new College combines the old exams formerlyoffered in COSFSTV and the IOIE:CIS with new exams.Students who have taken the existing exams need notretake them. Their credits are still on their records, justrenamed. It is expected that more exams will be written in thefuture.College of Babylon 5By Admiral Carol ThompsonThe College of Humour is not just a collection of jokes(although there are a few here and there; the author justcouldn’t help it!). The only prerequisite is that you knowhow to smile, and can have fun along the way!College of FarscapeBy Admiral Carol ThompsonAstronaut John Crichton assumes he'll be home in timefor dinner. But a freak accident during an experimentalspace mission catapults him across a thousand galaxiesto an alien battlefield. Suddenly, he's trapped amongalien creatures wielding deadly technology - a battle that20th century sci-fi pop culture never prepared him for.Hunted by a merciless military race, Crichton begins hisquest for home from a galaxy far, far away. Thus began the epic adventure "Farscape", thegroundbreaking award-winning sci-fi production that hasbecome a fan favorite around the world. (1998-2002)It was the dawn of the third age of mankind, ten yearsafter the Earth-Minbari War. The Babylon Project was adream given form. Its goal: to prevent another war bycreating a place where humans and aliens could workout their differences peacefully. It's a port of call, homeaway from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. Humans and aliens wrapped in twomillion, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal, allalone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it'sour last, best hope for peace. This is the story of the lastof the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name ofthe place is Babylon 5.With a still-active and rather large fanbase, this series(1994 – 1999) sparked a number of online RPG’s, anumber of movies and a short-lived series Crusade. This new College combines the old exams formerlyoffered in COSFSTV with new exams. Students whohave taken the existing exams need not retake them.Their credits are still on their records, just renamedThis College will be expanded to include more races, themovies and Crusade.5
