New report: Legal aid cutsdeny thousands of migrantchildren justiceleft to fend for themselves. Many are having togather witness statements, evidence about theirpast and risk having to represent themselves incourt — a challenge that even adults find difficult. The report found that, across theUK, free regulated services whichdealwithappealsandrepresentation have been reducedby almost 50%, while overallimmigration advice services havebeen cut by at least 30% since theLegalAid,SentencingandPunishment of Offenders Act cameinto force in 2013.A new report by TheChildren's Society "CutOff From Justice: galaid" found that theremoval of legal aid formost immigration casesmeansthatmanychildren, including thosein local authority care, areat risk of abuse orexploitation because theirimmigration status cannotbe resolved, increasingtheir vulnerability. As a result, even children who arestill entitled to legal aid, such asthose seeking protection frompersecution or who are known tohave been trafficked, may beunable to get the legal support theyneed due to a lack of free servicesThe Children’s Society is calling on the Governmentto make sure that children with immigration cases, who are here on their own can, once again, get legalaid. Without it, huge numbers of children are beingin their area.See our website www.cfed.org.uk for a full copy ofthe report under publication.Criminalisation of WomenThe All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Women in the Penal System has published a'Report on the Inquiry into Preventing Unnecessary Criminalisation of Women'. The Inquirystemmed from the conclusions of previous APPG inquiries and reports by the HowardLeague for Penal Reform that found themajority of women involved in the CriminalJustice System do not need to be there, womenare criminalised too quickly and easily, and theproblems they face ought to be addressed byother agencies at a much earlier stage. TheInquiry focussed on what criminal justice andnon-criminal justice related agencies weredoing to reduce unnecessary criminalisationand any barriers to their work. For a copy of the report go to: orts/11
