ABOUT THE VIETNAMESE ASSOCIATION, TORONTO (VAT)Established in 1972 as a fraternal organization and incorporated in 1979 as a non-profit charitable organization, VAThas the following Mission Statements: To provide settlement and adaptation services to immigrants and help them integrate and participate successfully inCanadian society. We achieved fantastic milestones this year andcould not have done it without the support of our members and community. The hard work, dedication andcommitment shown by the Board Members, VAT staff and volunteers have reiterated how generous, passionateand devoted they are in providing great services, knowledge and enthusiasm. She is very active in community works and wasBoard Treasurer of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto from 2008 to 2012 when she tookmaternity leave. Linh Nguyen returned to VAT board in June 2013. Ba D. Huynh.Mr. Ba Huynh has been volunteering for numerous community activities and a recipient of theOntario Volunteer Service Award in 2007. Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II DiamondJubilee Medal in 2012. Presently a board member of the Vietnamese Elderly Association ofToronto. Current status: Retired. James Nguyen, Honours B.Sc., M.B.A.Graduated in 2000 from Schulich School of Business at York University with MBA.Professional Career: has been working at UPS Canada for last 7 years as Senior AccountManager with professional accreditations; CITT designate (certified logistics specialist) andCertified Customs Specialist (CCS). August 3 - Vietnamese Association, Toronto (VAT) and the Elderly Vietnamese Association,Toronto (EVAT) jointly organized the community summer picnic. The event consisted ofVietnamese foods, BBQ, children games, and outdoor activities for seniors such as Tai Chi, Yoga,and Qi Cong.Ngày 3 tháng 8 - HNV Toronto và Hội Cao Niên VN Toronto cùng tổ chức buổi Picnic CộngĐồng. Vietnamese Canadian children performed traditional songs and dance at the Tet Festival. Thesechildren learn and practice the arts throughout the year to experience some aspects of the Vietnameseculture. At89 years old, Mr. ThanhTran is still an activecommunity volunteer.Ngày 4 tháng 5 - ÔngTrần Thiện Thanh (đứngthứ ba từ bên phải) là cựuthành viên Hội Đồng QuảnTrị Hội Người ViệtToronto, đã đoạt giảithưởng CMC cho cộngđồng người Việt.Ông Thanh tự đóng một chiếc tàu để thoát khỏi Việt Nam năm 1980 cùng với 55 người khác. VAT’S SETTLEMENT SERVICES - DỊCH VỤ ĐỊNH CƯ DI DÂN TẠI HNVVAT settlement counsellors serve newcomers under the funding of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.Programs include one-on-one counseling and monthly workshops on various topics such as employmentassistance and Citizenship Preparation Class.In the fiscal year from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, VAT staff served 8,267 client visits, an increase by47% from the previous year. VAT staff also organized 141 workshops, information sessions and classes. Thisnumber is a decrease by 44% from 251 last year, as VAT devoted more time for one-on-one counselling to meetdemand. VAT staff has helped many people adapt to their new environment and found jobs suitable to theirqualification and experiences.Besides the main funding of 631,696 from CIC during the fiscal year 2013-14, VAT also received smallerfunding from three other sources: Employment and Social Development Canada (HRSDC): 24,380 for the Computer Training Programfor seniors.
