In fact, every career path is different. It’s a position that takes unique skills,perspectives and backgrounds. The two things all Special Agents share are a drive to help keep our nation safe andpride in making a difference in the communities they serve.FBI Special Agents are responsible for conducting sensitive national security investigations and enforcing morethan 300 federal statutes. Those who make it through the process become part of an elite team that keepsour country safe. The SASS typically takes one year to complete, often longer. FBI Special Agent Selection ProcessAll You Need to Know to ApplyGeneral InformationSpecial Agent Selection System (SASS)Step 1: Application and ScreeningYou must attach to your application all other necessary forms (your official or unofficial transcripts, a DD-214 forformer members of the armed forces or your military enlistment contract for current members of the armed forces).Applications are screened for eligibility and suitability.Applicants who reside outside the United States should be aware that candidates must be available for travelto the United States for testing. Travel is at the applicant’s expense. Candidates may choose whicheverProcessing Field Office (PFO) is most convenient for them. A list of all 56 Field Offices is on the FBI websiteat FBI.gov/contact-us/field-offices.Timeframe: The initial screening process varies greatly and is dependent upon the completion of applicationmaterials, the overall application volume and the current needs of the FBI as a whole. Following the guidelinesin the Special Agent job posting and on FBIJobs.gov will expedite processing.Step 2: Phase I TestApplicants who pass preliminary screening will be invited to take the Phase I computerized test within a proctoredenvironment. The Phase I test is a three-hour exam consisting of five assessments: Logic-Based Reasoning,Figural Reasoning, Personality Assessment, Preferences and Interests and Situational Judgment.Timeframe: Once invited, candidates have 21 days to schedule their Phase I Test and will receive a pass/failnotification within one hour of completing the test.Step 3: Required InformationOnce you have completed the Special Agent application and received a passing score on Phase 1 Testing, we will sendyou an email notification to access and complete the Required Information part of your application. This includes theSpecial Agent Physical Fitness Test (SA PFT) self-evaluation, Critical Skills and Self-Reported Language sections.Timeframe: You must submit the Required Information before you can move forward in the SA Application process.Step 4: Meet and Greet Session / Review ProcessNext, applicants will be scheduled to attend a Meet and Greet session conducted by their PFO. During the Meetand Greet session, one or more evaluators will conduct an in-person review of your application and validate theinformation you submitted. Your information will then be evaluated to assess your competitiveness for Phase II.Timeframe: The average timeframe for a candidate to move from Phase I to Phase II is 23 weeks.Step 5: Phase II TestPhase II consists of a writing assessment and a structured interview conducted by a panel of three Special Agents.(See Testing Overview Guide for more details.)Timeframe: Candidates receive their Phase II results within approximately two weeks of completing the test.6

FBI Special Agent Selection ProcessAll You Need to Know to ApplyGeneral InformationStep 6: Official Physical Fitness Test (PFT)Candidates who pass Phase II will be required to pass a Physical Fitness Test (PFT). An official PFT will be conductedat the applicant’s local Field Office by trained FBI personnel and scored in the same manner as the PFT self-assessment.The FBI is currently running a PFT pilot where applicants must pass a PFT before taking Phase II. If the processingoffice is a member of the pilot, the applicant will be informed before or during the Meet and Greet.Timeframe: Candidates have 14 days after passing Phase II to take their PFT, with exceptions made for inclement weather.Because of this quick turnaround, PFOs often tentatively schedule candidates’ PFTs before they take their Phase II.Step 7: Conditional Appointment Offer (CAO)Candidates who pass both Phase II and an official PFT will receive a Conditional Appointment Offer (CAO).Hiring is contingent on the successful completion of the remaining SASS components (medical, backgroundinvestigation, polygraph test, etc.).Timeframe: Candidates will receive their CAO shortly after passing their PFT and will have five days to acceptor reject the offer.Step 8: Background InvestigationCandidates who receive a CAO will need to complete a background investigation to get a Top Secret Clearancefrom the FBI in order to become a Special Agent. The background investigation includes a Personnel SecurityInterview (PSI), polygraph examination, drug test, fingerprinting and medical examination. It also includes creditand arrest checks, interviews with associates, references and verification of educational achievements.Timeframe: The average background investigation takes approximately six months, but can take up to 18 monthsor more depending on where an applicant has lived, worked and traveled.Step 9: Basic Field Training Course (BFTC)Candidates who successfully complete the steps as described above must pass a PFT no more than 60 days priorto arriving at the FBI Academy. After passing, candidates are eligible to be scheduled for the Basic Field TrainingCourse (BFTC) at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. Assignment to the BFTC is based on the needs of the FBI.Though New Agent Trainees (NATs) are paid for their time at the FBI Academy, they must successfully completeall portions of the BFTC in order to be fully hired as FBI Special Agents.Timeframe: The BFTC lasts 19 weeks (including orientation) and candidates are typically notified two to four weeksin advance of their class date. Applicants are allowed to request a different BFTC only once, with sufficient cause,after an initial BFTC date is provided.Finish: PlacementUpon successful completion of the background investigation and BFTC, candidates officially join the FBIas Special Agents.IMPORTANTApplicants must not post information about the application process on socialmedia, message boards, chat rooms, blogs, internet forums or any other publicforum. Use discretion when discussing the process with family and friends.Applicants must not solicit help, tips, advice or assistance of ANY kind onsocial media, message boards, blogs, internet forums or from FBI employees.7

FBI Special Agent Selection ProcessAll You Need to Know to ApplyGeneral InformationPhysical RequirementsSpecial Agents are often placed in situations that challenge their physical endurance. Heightened levels of strength,flexibility and endurance are necessary for personal safety in an arrest situation, as well as to help ensure the safetyof fellow Agents, other law enforcement officers and civilians. To ensure Special Agents possess the necessary levelsof fitness to best complete any duty required of them, the FBI requires that applicants be in excellent physical shape.Applicants who pass the official Physical Fitness Test (PFT) are considered sufficiently fit to safely and successfullycomplete the physical training and defensive tactics portion of training at the FBI Academy and are prepared toeffectively respond to life-threatening situations on the job.Failing the Physical Fitness TestApplicants are offered three opportunities to pass the official PFT within one year after passing Phase II. If theapplicant failed his or her initial post-Phase II PFT, the applicant’s remaining PFT opportunities will be scheduledat any time that is mutually agreeable to the applicant, Applicant Coordinator and/or the physical fitness advisor.Applicants who do not pass the PFT within the one-year time limit will be deactivated and must reapply to thecurrent posting and take a PFT within 30 days. When reapplying you MUST use a different email address fromthe one you originally used. (Read more on page 25.)All Special Agent applicants must be able to pass several physical tests to be medically cleared to attend theFBI Academy. These include:» A minimum of one official, field-administeredPhysical Fitness Test (PFT).» Hearing test.» Medical/Health review.» Vision test.NOTE: Applicants for the Tactical Recruitment Program (TRP) have additional requirements. (Read TRP section on page 24.)Vision Requirements» Applicants’ distant visual acuity, corrected or uncorrected, must meet FBI standards, which are 20/20 inone eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye.» Applicants with distant visual acuity greater than orequal to 20/100 require medical documentation ofsuccessful soft contact lens use for at least one yearwithout significant problems or adverse effects.» Applicants with recent refractive surgery involvingthe creation of a corneal flap must wait six monthsfollowing surgery and complete an ophthalmologyevaluation to document complete healing prior toapplying for employment.» Color-vision deficient applicants may be consideredif they successfully complete a Farnsworth D-15 colorvision test administered at the Field Office. Please notethat the use of color-corrective lenses is not allowed.8

FBI Special Agent Selection ProcessAll You Need to Know to ApplyGeneral InformationHearing RequirementsHearing has long been considered a critical and essential job function for the Special Agent position. SpecialAgents must be able to detect, localize and locate the source of sounds that may indicate danger or risk whileentering locations tactically, while pursuing, confronting and arresting subjects and while transporting subjectsto custody. Additionally, Agents must be able to hear and understand the speech of subjects and witnesses duringinterviews and interrogations, which are sometimes conducted in noisy, hectic situations, as well as communicatewith team members during raids, arrests and searches when accurate communication without repetition isnecessary. Applicants who have an average hearing loss greater than 25 decibels (ANSI standards) at 1,000, 2,000and 3,000 Hertz should have no single value at 35 decibels. Additionally, no single reading may exceed 35 decibelsat 500 Hertz or 45 decibels at 4,000 Hertz.Candidates who fail the initial pure-tone audiometry screening will be asked to complete additional audiometrytesting (at their own expense and conducted by an audiologist of their choosing) to more accurately assess thecandidate’s hearing ability. For those who fail testing with their audiologist, following the above standards, the FBIHearing in Noise Test (HINT) will be offered. Only the FBI HINT will be accepted. This test was developed to evaluateone’s ability to functionally hear human communication in a noisy environment and is specifically designed toassess the hearing requirements for law enforcement duties.The HINT uses short sentences instead of pure tones to establish a functional level of hearing using both ears. Passingcriteria include the Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) in quiet (27.0 decibels) and Composite SRT in noise (71 decibels)measured in noise at 75 decibels. For those candidates who wear hearing aids, open field testing is available.Immunization/VaccinationsCandidates must provide documentation showing the following required immunizations:» Polio (four childhood doses) and/or a recent booster.» Meningitis (Menactra, Menveo or Menomune) withinthe past five years.» Tetanus Diphtheria (TD) or Tetanus, Diphtheriaand Pertussis (TdAP) within the past 10 years.» Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) (two doses).» Hepatitis A and B completed by one of thefollowing means:* Twinrix (A Hepatitis A and B combination, three doses). Hepatitis A (two doses) and Hepislay B (two doses).» Varicella (two doses) or proof of history of having hadchicken pox. This can be completed with a personalstatement that includes the approximate year of disease or by providing proof of a positive titer (blood test).» Influenza (current season).The FBI accepts the following documents as proof of vaccination history:» CDC 731 “International Certificate of Vaccinationor Prophylaxis” or Yellow Card» Military records.» Physician’s or licensed health care provider’s records.» Local or state health department records.» Proof of positive titer (blood test) will only be acceptedfor MMR, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Varicella.» School records.» Travel health clinic records.*Note: Hepatitis immunizations may take up to six months to complete if you have not already started the series with the exception ofHepislay B (newly approved by the FDA), which can be completed in four weeks.9
