Dielectric FluidsElectrical ApparatusR2000Envirotemp FR3 FluidDESCRIPTIONEnvirotemp FR3 fluid is a renewable,bio-based natural ester dielectric coolantfor use in distribution and power classtransformers where its unique firesafety, environmental, electrical, andchemical properties are advantageous.Acceptance limits for new fluid areshown in Table 1. More than 20 yearsof field experience (with over onemillion transformers in service) confirmsexcellent performance.Envirotemp FR3 fluid is formulated fromseed oils and performance enhancingadditives. It does not contain petroleum, halogens, silicones or corrosive sulfur. Itquickly and thoroughly biodegrades1 inthe environment. The fluid is non-toxicin acute aquatic2 and oral toxicity tests3.The Color Green tint reflects its favorableenvironmental profile (See Table 2) andreadily distinguishes it from petroleumbased oils.Dielectric Liquid for use in complying withthe National Electric Code6 (NEC) andinsurance listing requirements7.Envirotemp FR3 fluid has exceptionallyhigh flash/fire points of approximately330/360 C - the highest ignitionresistance of any high fire point dielectricfluid currently available. It qualifies as a“high-fire-point”, “less-flammable”, “IECClass K”, and “non-propagating” fluid.Envirotemp FR3 fluid is Approved4 by FMGlobal and Classified5 by UnderwritersLaboratories as a Less-FlammableEnvirotemp FR3 fluid is compatiblewith standard transformer constructionmaterials and components. EnvirotempFR3 fluid should be stored, handled, and processed in a similar meticulousmanner as transformer mineral oil. SeeCargill’s Envirotemp FR3 Fluid Storageand Handling Guide, S10, for additionalinformation.A transformer filled with FR3 fluid complieswith the transformer temperatureoperating range requirements defined inIEEE C57.12.00 and IEC 60076-1.TABLE 1Acceptable values for receipt of shipments of new FR3 fluidPROPERTYASTMPhysicalColorFlash Point PMCC ( C)Flash Point COC ( C)Fire Point ( C)Pour Point ( C)Density at 20 C (g/cm3 )Relative Density (Specific Gravity) 15 CViscosity (mm2/sec)D1500D93D92D92D97D1298D445ISO/IECISO 2211ISO 2719ISO 2592ISO 2592ISO 3016ISO 3675D1524BiodegradationElectricalDielectric Breakdown (kV)Dielectric Breakdown (kV)Gassing Tendency (mm/min)Dissipation FactorChemicalCorrosive SulfurWater Content (mg/kg)Acid Number (mg KOH/g)PCB Content (mg/kg)Oxidation Stability (48 hrs, 120 C)Total Acidity (mg KOH/g)Viscosity at 40 C (mm2/sec)Dissipation Factor at 90 C (tan δ) 1.0 250 275 300 -10 300 -10 0.96 0.96 15 50 500 15 50bright and clearclear, free from sedimentand suspended matterreadily biodegradablereadily biodegradableD877 30D1816D1816 20 35 35IEC 60156 0.20D924 0.05IEC 60247 4.0D924D1275D1533D974D4059NOTE: Specifications should be writtenreferencing only the defined ASTM or IECindustry standard acceptance values andtest methods. Additionally, the study reportsthat Envirotemp FR3 fluid’s overallenvironmental performance impactscore is 1/4th that reported for mineraloil (and that’s without considerationfor Envirotemp FR3 fluid’s transformerinsulation life extending properties). This cumulative score results fromadding the impacts of water intake, smog, ozone depletion, indoor air, human health, habitat alteration, global warming, fossil fuel depletion, eutrophication, ecological toxicity, critical air pollutants, and acidification.Envirotemp FR3 fluid, and transformersfilled with Envirotemp FR3 fluid arelisted in the US Federal BioPreferredProducts Program, making themreadily identifiable as BioPreferredto all applicable Federal agencies.Envirotemp FR3 fluid is an excellentoption for ISO 14000, Green Build, andother similar environmental programsthat promote the use of alternative, environmentally preferable andsustainable materials and procedures.SMFigure 2.Flash & Fire Point of Dielectric Fluids ( C).FIRE SAFETYEnvirotemp FR3 fluid has a fire point ofapproximately 360 C, well above theminimum of 300 C required for highfire point fluid classifications. Its flashpoint (approximately 330 C) is higherthan the fire point of most other ignitionresistant dielectric fluids in use today(Figure 2).In laboratory and full-scale ignitiontests, Envirotemp FR3 fluid hasdemonstrated greater fire resistancethan other dielectric fluid types. Basedon large-scale arc ignition testing, FMGlobal concluded that the probabilityof a pool fire evolving from EnvirotempEnvirotemp FR3 fluid was so lowthat a heat release rate need not bedetermined or considered for FMGlobal approval.Figure 3.Fire Hazard Rating UL Standard 340.Based on large-scale arc ignition and hotmetal ignition tests, FM Global recognizesEnvirotemp FR3 fluid as an equivalentsafeguard to space separation, firebarriers, and fire suppression systems formost installations.containing 10,000 gallons of fluid orless, transformers’ separation distanceto buildings and other equipment maybe up to 1/10th the distance requiredfor mineral oil filled transformers, without fire walls or deluge systems.FM Global recognizes Envirotemp FR3fluid as a component of Approvedtransformers per FM Global Standard3990. When used in transformersOSHA recognizes this FM Globalstandard as fitting the definition ofa Listed and Labeled Product perNEC Section 110-3(b). The standardpermits Envirotemp FR3 fluid-filledtransformers to be installed indoors, typically without sprinklers or vaults, with a minimum clearance to walls ofjust 3 feet (0.9M).UL Standard 340 compares the firehazard ratings of various fluids. Figure3 shows the favorable rating assignedto Envirotemp FR3 fluid.3

Envirotemp FR3 fluidmeets the National Electrical CodeSection 450-23 requirements asa listed less-flammable liquid. It iscovered by OSHA Article §1910.305,Section 5(v).Envirotemp FR3 fluid is FM GlobalApproved and UnderwritersLaboratories Classified “LessFlammable” per NEC Article450-23, fitting the definition of a ListedProduct per NEC. For additionalinformation, request Cargill’s NECRequirement Guidelines 2008Code Options for the Installation ofListed Less-Flammable Liquid FilledTransformers.FLUID/PAPER INSULATIONSYSTEMThe unique chemical structure ofEnvirotemp FR3 fluid provides superiorinsulation system performancecompared to other types of dielectricfluids. The thermal properties ofEnvirotemp FR3 fluid make it a moreefficient coolant than higher molecularweight silicone and hydrocarbondielectric coolants.Envirotemp FR3 fluid has anexceptional ability to remove watergenerated by aging paper. Thisenables the fluid to significantly reducethe aging rate of transformer insulatingpaper. Per IEEE C57.100, acceleratedaging tests show that ThermallyUpgraded Paper (TUK) paper insulationaged in Envirotemp FR3 fluid takes 5-8times longer to reach the same endof-life points as TUK paper insulationaged in conventional mineral oil.Table 4 compares the time to reachinsulation end-of-life for TUK paperaged in Envirotemp FR3 fluid andconventional transformer oil. The timeto insulation end-of-life calculatedusing the IEEE C57.91 loading guide isincluded for comparison. Acceleratedaging tests show similar thermalaging improvement for non-thermallyupgraded Kraft paper.APPLICATIONSNOTE
