-3-OVERVIEWLow pressure breathing air compressors supply air for low pressure constant flow type respirators only.Oilless compressors produce no oil mist, oil vapor, or carbon monoxide (CO). High temperature alarms and oil/water filters are not required as they are with conventional air compressors. Breathing air compressors do notsignificantly change the air quality of the ambient air and are not designed to filter carbon monoxide or other toxicgases. An optional carbon monoxide monitor is available where required. Clean breathable air must be providedto the breathing air compressor inlet at all times. Note: Tight fitting constant flow respirators require 4 cfm (115lpm) minimum flow rate at the manufacturer’s stated pressure. Loose fitting hoods require at least 6 cfm (170lpm) per respirator.Caution: Read and Follow AllInstructions1. Do not use kerosene or any oil based solvents for cleaning these compressors.2. Do not lubricate oilless breathing air compressors.3. Do not run these air compressors in the wrong rotation; check the rotation arrow on the compressor ifyou are rewiring the electric motor. Disconnect the power source before servicing the electric motor.4. Do not run this compressor without connecting at least one hose and respirator to the manifold quickdisconnect assembly.5. Compressors must be used with constant flow, low pressure respirators only. Pressure demandrespirators will not operate on this compressor.6. The breathing air compressor units can not be operated in an area that is Immediately Dangerous to Lifeor Health (IDLH).7. The air inlet to the breathing air compressor must be located in a clean air environment wherebreathable air can be assured at all times. Up to 150 ft. (46 m) of extension tubing can be used toremote the intake snorkel. Contact the factory for assistance in determining the proper size tubing forremote intake setup.8. Vortex tubes require high pressure air, 60 - 100psi (4,1 - 6,9 bar), and will not operate on thesebreathing air compressor systems. Use Air Systems’ Cool-BoxTM for air cooling; order ModelBACB-196LP. Provides approximately 50o output air temperature.9. Pump surfaces can become very hot during operation. Do not touch these surfaces until the unit hasbeen shut off and allowed to cool.

-9-TROUBLESHOOTING (MODEL BAC-20P)PROBLEMPOSSIBLE CAUSEMotor will not start Insufficient pressureMotor icing (exterior) Very high humidityNo lubrication in vanesSOLUTIONCheck pressure gauge on compressed air source toensure proper supply pressure. Turn regulator knobclockwise to increase air pressure to air motor andnote the gauge pressure on the regulator.Normal during hot weatherCheck oil in lubricatorMAINTENANCENote: Most problems can be prevented by keeping filters clean. Dirty filters decrease pumpperformance and diminish pump service life. Inspect filters every 40 hours.1. Do not lubricate the oilless compressor! The carbon vanes and grease packed motor bearings do notrequire lubrication.2. Replace intake and exhaust filters regularly.3. Should excessive dirt, foreign particles, moisture, or oil be permitted to enter the pump, the vanes maystick or crack. Flushing the pump should take care of this condition. Recommended solvent is PartNumber BAC-1001.CLEANING INTERNAL COMPRESSOR PARTSIf the compressor is permitted to operate with dirty filters or stored for over 14 days, foreign particles andmoisture can accumulate in the pump chamber. To remove these contaminants, the compressor should be flushed(cleaned) periodically using an approved safety solvent, Air Systems’ Part Number BAC-1001. Flushing shouldbe done in an open well ventilated area.Flushing The Compressor1.2.3.4.5.6.Eye protection should be worn when flushing the unit.To flush the compressor, remove the intake filter assembly and remove the compressor filter element.Install a blank male plug into one of the quick connect couplings to allow free flow of air through thecompressor system. While the compressor is running, spray one or two ounces of safety solvent into the compressor’s airintake port.Flushing should be done in an open area away from sparks and flames. Run the compressor for a minimumof five minutes before using the compressor with a respirator.Do not use a flammable solvent or a solvent with a toxicity rating of 500ppm or greater to flush the unit.Do not use a solvent that leaves a petroleum residue.Warranty DisclaimerAir Systems’ manufactured equipment is warranted to the original user against defects in workmanship or materials under normal use forone year after date of purchase.
