Welcome to theSuburban EastConference MusicFestivalOn behalf of our tenmember schools, wewelcome you to the annualSuburban East ConferenceMusic Festival. The topbands, choirs andorchestras from ourrespective schools spentthe day working with threeprominent music clinicians,polishing and perfectingtheir own musical skills,and listening toperformances by theirpeers from other schools.Tonight we conclude ourmusic festival with aconcert that features thefinest vocal andinstrumental musicians inthe Suburban EastConference. Dr. Kristin TjornehojBand ClinicianKristin Tjornehoj holds a Ph.D. in music education and aM.M. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.M.degree in music education and performance from LutherCollege in Decorah, Iowa. Dr. Tjornehoj is a fullprofessor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls andthe conductor of the 9-11 Tribute Celebration.She is active as a conductor and clinician/lecturer,which has taken her across the U.S., Canada, China,Czech Republic, England, France, Iceland, and Scotland. She maintains a busyconducting/lecture schedule in both professional and educational settings, and iscurrently leader of the St. Croix Valley Symphony Orchestra, St. Croix Valley CommunityBand, and the adult choir at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton, MN. Shehas led ensembles on performance tours throughout the United States and abroad.Recent experiences include World Music and Music Appreciation study tours throughoutEurope. This May she will lead a group of students and interested adults in a music andarts cultural experience tour of the UK and Spain.Dedicated to the creation of new compositions, her credits of commissioned works orpremiers by prolific composers includes Joel Blahnick, Todd Coleman, Michael Colgrass,Gregory Fritze, Lars Jansson, Daniel Kallman, Johan de Meij, Joanne Metcalf, Craig Naylor,David Revill, Michael J. Roy, Jared Spears, Michael Torke, Joseph Turrin, Charles Young,and John Zdechlick.A participating member in several professional scholarly and community organizations,she currently serves on boards/committees of ArtReach St. Croix, Phipps Center for theArts, St. Croix Valley Community Foundation, and the Wisconsin Music EducatorsConference. She is also a member of the American Composers Forum, League ofAmerican Orchestras, National Band Association, and National Association for MusicEducation, the Minnesota Music Educators Association, Wisconsin Music EducatorsAssociation, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.Dr. Tjornehoj is the director for the Shell Lake Arts Center Band Camp, July 7-12, 2013.Other summer music opportunities led by Dr. Tjornehoj includes the St. Croix ValleyCommunity Band, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., from June 11-July18, 2013 with concerts throughout the greater St. Croix Valley.

Dr. Edith CopleyChoral ClinicianEdith A. Copley joined the Northern Arizona Universitymusic faculty in 1990 and is a Regents’ Professor of Musicand Director of Choral Studies. She conducts the highlyacclaimed Shrine of the Ages Choir and teachesundergraduate and graduate courses in conducting andgraduate choral literature. The Shrine of the Ages Choirhas performed at state, divisional and nationalconferences of the American Choral Directors Associationand the National Association of Music EducatorsConference. NAU choral ensembles under her directionhave toured internationally to Western Europe, thePeople’s Republic of China, Australia, New Zealand andSouth Africa. A concert tour performing Brahms "Requiem" with full orchestra is plannedto Bulgaria and Istanbul in 2014.In addition to her responsibilities at NAU, Dr. Copley conducts the Master Chorale ofFlagstaff, an auditioned 100-voice community chorus that performs majorchoral/orchestral works with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra (FSO). She has conductednumerous choral/orchestral works with the FSO, including Bach’s "B Minor Mass," Britten’s"War Requiem," Mozart’s "C Minor Mass," and Orff’s "Carmina Burana." In March 2013, Dr.Copley will conduct Verdi’s "Quattro Pezzi Sacri."Dr. Copley is a Past-President of the Western Division of the American Choral DirectorsAssociation (ACDA). She has also served as the Arizona ACDA President, program chair forthree ACDA western division conferences, and Interest Session Chair for the 2011 ACDANational Conference in Chicago. She will conduct the ACDA National Mixed Honor Choir inDallas in March 2013.Prior to her appointment at NAU, she taught secondary choral music for seven years in theMidwest and four years overseas in Vienna, Austria. She has also served as the assistantand interim principal conductor of the May Festival Chorus that performs with theCincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops. Dr. Copley has preparedchoral/orchestral works for the late Robert Shaw, James Conlon, Jesus Lobez-Cobes, andErich Kunzel.Dr. Copley has received numerous honors, including "NAU School of Performing ArtsCentennial Teacher of the Year Award" in 1999, "Arizona Music Educator of the Year" in2004 and the "Arizona ACDA Outstanding Choral Director Award" in 2007. Dr. Copley hasher own choral series with Santa Barbara Music Publications and is in high demand as afestival clinician and guest conductor in the US--conducting over 30 All-State Honor Choirs.She has also conducted international choral festivals in Germany, the Netherlands,Tasmania, Japan, Luxembourg, Australia, China and Turkey.

Mr. James BartschOrchestra ClinicianJames Bartsch is a native of St. Paul and a graduate of theUniversity of Minnesota. After teaching public schoolorchestra programs in Northfield and Red Wing for 16 years,he joined the administration of the Minnesota Orchestra in1999 as Director of Education, where he produces YoungPeople's Concerts, Family Concerts, and many othercommunity engagement programs.A conductor with the Minnesota Youth Symphonies for 22years, he is also active as a guest conductor including stateHigh School orchestra festivals in North Dakota and Montana,the Rapid City All-City Orchestra Festival, and others. A goal of the Regina Music Festival is to find stable financing to ensure the ongoing success of the festival. The Regina Music Festival costs 80,000 a year to operate. At present funding is provided by entry fees that cover approximately 35% of the costs to run the festival. Each year we seek the balance from individual and corporate
