Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter2020 Voter GuideDear Sierra Club Friends,I hope you are staying well during these extremely challenging times.Our voices and our votes are more important than ever as we seek to addressthe systemic injustices and unprecedented rollbacks of protections for ourair, water, public lands, and wildlife. The global pandemic has highlightedinequities in our communities, including with Indigenous nations who havesuffered disproportionately from COVID-19.While the challenges are many, we also have so much to be hopefulabout. We are closer than ever to electing a majority of candidates to theArizona Corporation Commission who will advance clean solar energy andenergy efficiency, impacting the lives of Arizonans for years to come. Thereare three seats up for Arizona Corporation Commission this cycle. There arefour seats for the Arizona Legislature where our endorsed candidates lost byfewer than 2,000 votes last cycle. In the Arizona Legislature, he cosponsored legislationto promote cleaner air and tofund environmental education,among other positive environmental legislation. During hisservice on the Arizona Corporation Commission, he wasa strong voice for clean air and clean energy, helping toadvance a renewable energy standard for Arizona and todeny approval of a power plant siting that would haveharmed Picacho Peak State Park. For U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona(i) incumbentCongressional District 1: Tom O’Halleran (i)Representative O’Halleran is running for his third term to serve in the US House of Representatives. He previously served in the Arizona Legislature where he was a strong advocate for more sustainable water policies. Since being elected to serve in CD1, O’Halleranhas co-sponsored legislation to protect the Grand Canyon region from uranium mining, ameasure to address just and equitable transition for the Navajo Generating Station (NGS),and bills to promote clean energy. The Providing Recovery Opportunities and Mitigatingthe Industry’s Shifting Economics (Promise), proposed to establish job and skills trainingfor employees displaced by the closure of NGS. O’Halleran supported several bills foraction on climate, including H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, to honor the UnitedStates’ commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and to recognize the need for immediate action on climate. SierraClub is pleased to endorse Rep. O’Halleran in his re-election bid for the US House.Congressional District 3: Raúl Grijalva (i)Representative Grijalva is an environmental and social justice champion. As chairperson ofthe House Natural Resources Committee, he has helped to advance both bills and messagesto protect Indigenous culture, wildlands, and wildlife, and clean air and clean water. Grijalvahas led the effort to keep intact the mineral withdrawal on lands surrounding Grand Canyonand to permanently protect those public lands by introducing and helping to win Housepassage of the Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act to permanently protect more thanone million acres of public land surrounding Grand Canyon National Park. He has also ledefforts to stop the proposed Rosemont Mine from destroying the Santa Rita Mountains andto reverse the land swap that will allow Resolution Copper to take ownership of Oak Flat.Sierra Club wholeheartedly endorses Representative Raúl Grijalva.Congressional District 7: Ruben Gallego (i)Representative Gallego is a strong advocate for Indigenous people as Chair ofthe Natural Resources Subcommittee forIndigenous Peoples of the United States.He is also an advocate for action on climate change and promoting clean energyresources. He is a co-sponsor of legislation to require economy-wide net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and to direct agencies toreduce emissions, and has called on Congress to do more to help states such as Arizonawith the current impacts of the climate crisis, such as drought, fires, and extreme temperatures. Stanton is a strong supporter of parks and other public lands and believes wemust do more to clean up our air and water.
