RWA Mystery/Suspense Chapter presentsThe Daphne du Maurier AwardFor Excellence in Mystery/SuspenseUNPUBLISHED DIVISION 2019CONTEST RULESThe Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense (The Daphne) is awriting contest with two divisions, one for published and one for unpublished authors.The Daphne is named for Daphne du Maurier, the author of REBECCA, a suspensenovel with romantic and gothic overtones and a precursor to today's romantic suspense.The contest provides helpful feedback by trained judges. Winning or placing in thecompetition adds a boost to the entrant's writing career.These rules apply to the Unpublished Division of the contest.Eligibility: The Daphne is open to all writers who have never been published in book-lengthfiction (40,000 words or more). All work must be the entrant's original work, and notbe contracted for publication prior to entering the contest. The contest is also open to published authors who have not been published,including but not limited to self-published, during the last five years and never inmystery/suspense.Qualifications for published authors wishing to enter:- Not published, including self-published, in book-length fiction during the lastfive years- Have never been published in any form of mystery/suspense- New work must adhere to the contest’s mystery/romantic suspense guidelines- This new work must never have been published in any venue, and it mustnot have been viewed by or under an editor’s eye.- By signing the waiver when entering to this effect, learning otherwiseconstitutes an immediate disqualification and nonreturnable entry fee. Any manuscript that has previously finaled in The Daphne (including HonorableMention) is not eligible for entry. Membership in Romance Writers of America and/or KOD is NOT a requirement forentry.1

There is no limit to the number of entries per author or per category, but each entrymay be entered in ONLY ONE category.Entry Caps: Category (Series) romantic mystery/suspense: 50 entriesHistorical romantic mystery/suspense: 50 entriesInspirational romantic mystery/suspense: 50 entriesParanormal/Time Travel/Futuristic (PTTF) romantic mystery/suspense: 50 entriesMainstream mystery/suspense: 100 entriesSingle Title romantic mystery/suspense: 100 entriesEntry Timeframe and Deadline: Entries must be received ELECTRONICALLY NO LATER than 11:59 PM MT,March 15, 2019. You will receive an entry confirmation email.The contest opens for entries on January 15, 2019 at 12:01 AM MT. Entries will notbe forwarded to judges until all entries are received. Entry Payment: Entry Fee: 15 for KOD members; 30 non-KOD members.Payments will be made through the Daphne registration process and may besubmitted using PayPal, credit card, personal check on US bank, or money order inUS funds. Links are provided on the entry form. (See more in the How to Entersection below.)When paying by personal check or money order you must still complete the paymentprocess section, and then include the invoice and entry numbers on your payment.Personal checks and money orders must be postmarked no later than March 18,2019, made payable to RWA Romantic Suspense/Mystery Chapter and sent to thechapter treasurer per the instructions on the Daphne Contest confirmation email.Entries without completed profile, entry form and correct payment will not be judged,and any entry fee paid will not be returned (see How to Enter section below).For any questions regarding the entry payment process, please email the DaphneContest Chair at: daphnecontest@gmail.comUnpublished Contest CategoriesCategory (Series) Romantic Mystery/Suspense: any manuscript that fits into seriesromance defined as: romance written within a set of parameters that establish a style fortone, page length, sensuality level, and the requisite happy ending. Examples arestories similar to those found in the Harlequin Intrigue or Harlequin Romantic Suspenselines.Historical Romantic Mystery/Suspense: any manuscript set in a time that predatesthe end of World War II.Inspirational Romantic Mystery/Suspense: any manuscript in which religious orspiritual beliefs form a significant part of the story.2

Mainstream Mystery/Suspense: any manuscript where the mystery/suspense is themain plot.Paranormal (PTTF) Romantic Mystery/Suspense: any manuscript in whichparanormal elements play a significant role.Single Title Romantic Mystery/Suspense: any manuscript where the romance is themain plot but which contains elements of mystery/suspense. Helpful Hints for Determining CategoryThe entries in the Category (Series), Historical and Paranormal (PTTF) categoriesmay contain varying degrees of mystery or suspense with the romance as theprimary or secondary focus.If the romance is the primary focus, the story should follow the guidelines of aromance; the hero and heroine must end up together in a happy, committedrelationship.If the romance is the secondary focus, the story should follow the guidelines of aromance, but the committed relationship may be only alluded to.Entries in the Mainstream Mystery/Suspense category may contain only minorelements of romance or even none at all.Attention Young Adult Mystery Writers:o Does your YA mystery contain a romance? If not, please enter this manuscript inthe Mainstream category and label it in the header: Mainstream Mystery (YoungAdult). Romance is optional in this category.o If your YA mystery or romantic suspense contains romance, does it also haveparanormal, inspirational or historical elements? If so, please enter yourmanuscript in the subgenre category that best fits your work and label your entryas a Young Adult in the header, e.g. Paranormal (Young Adult) etc.It is the author’s responsibility to enter the work in the correct category. Allclarifications as to category should be made prior to submission. Final Round Judges have agreed to judge the first fifteen pages (15 pages) of theentry. The additional ten pages are for final round judges who wish to continuereading.Announcement of Finalists and Winners: Under normal circumstances, Finalists will be notified on or before May 5.Winners will be announced during the Awards Ceremony at the Death by ChocolateParty held annually during the RWA National Conference.The first place entry in each category will receive an engraved bookmark, an awardcertificate, a digital medallion, a cash prize of 25 and a voucher for one COFFINonline class.The second place entry will receive an award certificate, a digital medallion, a cashprize of 15 and a voucher for one COFFIN online class.The third place entry will receive an award certificate, a digital medallion, a cashprize of 10 and a voucher for one COFFIN online class.The remaining Honorable Mentions will receive an award certificate, a digitalmedallion and a voucher for one COFFIN online class.The top overall scoring entry will receive The Daphne du Maurier Award forExcellence in Mystery/Suspense, and will also receive a commemorative pin, anaward certificate, a digital medallion and voucher for one COFFIN online class.First through third place winners in each category will be published in the RomanceWriters Report (RWR ) the monthly magazine of Romance Writers of America .If you have any questions, please contact the Daphne Contest Chair at:daphnecontest@gmail.com6
