Keynote Speaker: Dr. Thomas F. FlynnThomas F. Flynn, Ph.D., is Alvernia’s sixth president, havingserved since 2005. During this time, he has overseen thedevelopment of new strategic and campus master plansand the campus-wide process culminating in theachievement of university status. Under his leadership,Alvernia has launched “Values and Vision:” The FiftiethAnniversary Campaign. In addition to major capital projectsalready completed, endowed professorships and centers ofexcellence have been established, notably the O’PakeInstitute for Ethics, Leadership and Public Service and theHolleran Center for Community Engagement.Prior to his arrival at Alvernia, Dr. Flynn served as SeniorAdvisor for the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC),where he led a national symposium on the relationbetween liberal arts education and professionalleadership, involving corporate leaders and universitypresidents. Previously, he served nine years at Millikin University (IL), initially as Provost andsubsequently as President. He also spent fourteen years on the faculty of Mount Saint Mary'sCollege (MD), where he was Professor of English and served as Dean of the College.A native of Boston, he earned his B.A. in English at Boston College and his M.A. and Ph.D. inAmerican Culture from the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of Harvard University'sInstitute of Educational Management and New Presidents' Institute and has spent asabbatical in the President's Office at Georgetown University, where he assisted on strategicplanning and a symposium on Ex Corde Ecclesiae.Active in economic development, intercultural dialogue, and community-based learning, Dr.Flynn serves on the Board of Directors of both Caron and Reading Hospital as well as theadvisory board for the Jesuit Center in Wernersville. He is a past member of several nationalboards, including the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), the Association of FranciscanColleges and Universities (AFCU), and the American Council of Education's (ACE) coordinatingboard for all sectors of higher education. Currently, he serves on the boards for theAssociation of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) and National Association ofIndependent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) as well as for the Association of IndependentColleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP). Honored as an academic leader in 1992by the National Center for the First Year Experience and in 2001 by the Council ofIndependent Colleges, he considers his most important professional award to be aDistinguished Teaching Award received in 1978 while he was a graduate teaching assistant atthe University of Michigan.Dr. Flynn is married to Helen Sheimo Flynn, a native South Dakotan and also a formergraduate student from the University of Michigan. She is a technology specialist and countylibrary director enjoying her third career and an avid reader of mysteries. Their son, Daniel, agraduate Xavier University (OH), is an international program coordinator for the JesuitVolunteer Corps (JVC). The Flynns share interests in music, sports, travel, and the beach.

This is the 19th year of Reading Eagle Company’s Berks’ Best scholarship project, which issponsored by Berks County Community Foundation. This project began as a way to highlight theteenagers in our community who study, work and share their talents without media attention.We’re honored to have dedicated judges who come from local businesses, community organizations and colleges.
