Matters of the MindPage 2Book ReviewSonja BeachamDalton Family Support GroupMind Estranged: My Journey from Schizophreniaand Homelessness to Recovery by Bethany YeiserMs. Yeiser has written a book to help us all: caregivers, mental health professionals, and people living with a severemental illness. Bethany Yeiser is a bright and sensitive collegestudent who is thrown into psychosis during her junior year. She travels to Africa, China and Asia and is witness to greatpoverty and despair. After returning to the United States, hermental illness keeps her from connecting with family andfriends. She goes undiagnosed for four years. Her life as ahomeless person is descriptive and heart breaking. I read herbook in a day. She is explicit in explaining how her thinkingwas skewed by delusions and voices. Ms. Yeiser is now symptom free. This book has given mea deeper understanding of my own son, and my hope for his life is stronger. You can find Ms.Yeiser’s book on Amazon: Homelessness-Recovery/dp/099034522XYou can follow her blog: http://www.bethanyyeiser.com/Check out this very enlightening -from-schizophrenia-homelessness-to-recovery/NAMI Georgia holds Annual Conference and ElectionsApril 25. Matters of the MindPage 8May is Mental Health MonthEach year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. Duringthe month of May, NAMI and the rest of the country are bringing awareness to mental illness. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care. Each year, the movement grows stronger. In 2013, President Obama proclaimed May asNational Mental Health Awareness Month and brought the issue of mental health to theforefront of our nation’s thoughts. We believe that these issues are important to address year round, but highlighting theseissues during May provides a time for people to come together and display the passion andstrength of those working to improve the lives of the tens of millions of Americans affected bymental illness.Watch for Upcoming Events to bring awareness to mental illness! Our website www.namiromega.org is being revised by the help of Berry College students. We will unveil it soon.
