IEC61508 SIL-3CErtIfIEd SyStEmSMicroNet-Plus & tMr APPlicAtioNsIn accordance with IEC 61508, TÜV Rheinland hasapproved Woodward’s MicroNet platform to be integratedinto SIL-3 based safety systems. The MicroNet platformcan now be integrated as a safety PLC to create an IEC61508 SIL-3 safety certified system. Both the MicroNetPlus and MicroNet-TMR platforms have been assessedby TÜV for use as a safety control platform in a completeSIL-3 safety system (MPUs, controller, trip solenoids, tripvalves, wiring, etc.).The MicroNet controller platform is a state-of-the-art digitalcontrol platform designed to reliably control and protectsteam turbines, gas turbines, and compressor trains usedin system-critical applications where the chance of a safetyissue or large economic losses may be possible.PLANTDCSMicroNetSAFETY MODULEMICRONETSAFETY SYSTEMCLOSED INDICATIONCONTROLVALVEGASPSTRIP VALVESGENERATOR,COMPRESSOR,OR PUMPTSTSPSREDUNDANT SPEED SIGNALSANALOG OR DISCRETE SIGNALSThe MicroNet Plus’ dual redundant and the MicroNetTMR’s 2-out-of-3 voted architecture ensures that correctdecisions are made, correct responses are performed, and the prime mover continues to safely operate nomatter the single point failure. The MicroNet TMR’ssuperior architecture and diagnostic coverage combine tocreate a system with more than 99.99% availability and99.999% reliability. For IEC61508 SIL-3 based applications, a safety certifiedMicroNet Safety Module (MSM) is required as partof the MicroNet system. The MSM functions as thesystem’s SIL-3 logic solver, and its fast (10 millisecond)response time and integrated overspeed and accelerationdetection/protection functionality make it ideal forapplications on critical high-speed rotating motors, compressor, turbines, or engines. However, thedeterministic behavior and fast scan rates ofWoodward safety logic solvers were designed incollaboration with turbine manufacturers to ensurethe fast response times required to shut down large, medium, and small turbines, quickly and safely. From the simplex to the triple-modular-redundant, Woodward has thesafety system to meet your asset protection requirements.sil-2turbomachinery safety logic solver* ProTech -SXDecADes oF eXPerieNce iN eVerYsAFetY MoDuleSensing turbine speed for the purpose of very quicklyand accurately sensing a turbine overspeed condition isa challenge for any safety PLC or overspeed detectiondevice. PrOtECtION BEyONdOVErSPEEdAlthough overspeed protection is a key function of any turbomachinerysafety system, advancements in computing technology allowWoodward safety systems to detect and even anticipate many differenttypes of unsafe operating conditions and safely shut down theturbine, avoiding costly catastrophic failures and people being hurt orkilled. Leveraging high-end processors and ield proven algorithms,Woodward’s line of turbine safety systems can function as the logicsolver for all related safety instrumented functions (SIFs).safety instrumented functions include:ÆÆÆÆÆÆÆÆÆTurbine overspeedTurbine over-accelerationAnti-surge control failure (compressor only)Lost lube/control oilEnclosure fireCombustor flame-out (gas turbine only)Turbine control failureLost gland seal steamStuck/slow shutdown valvedIAGNOStIC COVErAGE WItHQUICKtrIP BLOCK ASSEmBLIESEquipment safety standards require a high level of diagnostic coverageto verify the operational integrity of a safety system. One method ofassuring that this coverage meets the required safety integrity levelfor the respective safety instrumented function is to routinely test andverify operation of different components within the safety system.Diagnostic tests can be dificult to perform on safety system componentsthe turbomachinery is operating, without compromising the safety of themachine or reducing the integrity of the safety system. For this reason, inconjunction with steam turbine OEMs, Woodward created its “QuickTrip”trip block assembly. The QuickTrip trip bloc assembly is designed for use in steam turbineshutdown systems for quick and reliable dumping of the turbine’strip oil header. This integrated trip block assembly is intended for useon mechanical-drive or generator-drive steam turbines that use lowpressure (5-25 bar / 73–363 psi) hydraulic trip oil headers. The QuickTrip bloc’s fault-tolerant design makes it ideal for criticalsteam turbine applications where turbine up-time and availability areessential. This trip block assembly’s 2-out-of-3 voting design providesusers with a very high level of system reliability as well as compliancewith industry standard API-670.

TRIP VAlVe HeAltH MoNitoriNGThe reliability of shutdown components is of criticalimportance to ensure equipment, plant, and personnelsafety and health. Just as important is how fast theseshutdown components function in an emergencysituation. In situations where a turbine is operating atits full-load position and receiving 100% input energy,it is imperative when immediate loss-of-load conditionsoccur that the entire shutdown system responds quicklyenough to shut off the input energy source and safelyshutdown the turbine. For this reason American Petroleum Institute’sstandard API670 5th Edition now requires thefollowing in Section #8: “If specified, the machinevendor or responsible party shall verify that theresponse time of the entire overspeed detectionsystem including final control elements is fastenough to prevent the prime mover and any of itsdriven machines from exceeding their maximumallowable speeds.”To enable turbine users and operators to meet thisnew standard, Woodward’s turbine safety systemsencompass functions to measure and record the timeit takes to sense a shutdown condition (overspeedor other) to the time it takes for the inal element(trip valve) to shut off the input energy source. Thisresponse-time-based function records the responseof the system on a 1 millisecond basis and issuesan alarm if any component of the shutdown circuittakes too long to operate, allowing plant personnel tocorrect the problem before it is too late.* Throttle Trip Valve
