The Aggies dropped a heartbreaking50-47 overtime loss to Battle of I-10 rival UTEP on Sept. 19. After NM State took an early lead on their first drive, the two teams tradedtouchdowns often for a regulation score that was knotted at 44-44. The Aggies began overtime with the ball, and freshman ParkerDavidson hit his second career field goal, this time a 44-yard score, to give the home team the lead. On UTEP’s drive, Miner quarterbackRyan Metz found Cedrick Lang in the end zone for a 6-yard pass and the win. NM State led the game in passing yards with 285 yardscompared to UTEP’s 273 yards and in total offense with 551 yards to the Miners’ 542 yards. The Aggies scored on all six red zone chanceswith five touchdowns and one field goal from inside the 20-yard line. Davidson also went 2-for-2 on field goals. Larry Rose III continuesto lead the Aggies’ rushing efforts as he amassed 196 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. The sophomore averaged 9.8 yards percarry and had a long rush of 82 yards. Rose III now has 329 total rushing yards and three touchdowns. He averages 109.7 yards pergame and 6.6 yards per carry. Teldrick Morgan racked up 151 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. The Hanover, Md. nativehad a long reception of 78 yards against the Miners. He also collected 45 return yards and nine rushing yards for a game-high 205all-purpose yards. Morgan is second on the team in receiving yards with 249 on 13 catches. He averages 83.0 yards per game and 19.2yards per catch. Tyrian Taylor leads the team in receiving with 264 yards and three touchdowns on 14 catches. The junior chipped in39 receiving yards and a touchdown on two catches against UTEP. Tyler Rogers completed 14 of his 28 pass attempts for 285 yards andthree touchdowns. Rogers has seven touchdowns on the season and has thrown for 866 yards through the first three games. Overall,the junior has completed 60-of-111 pass attempts for a 54.1 percent completion rate. Jaden Wright garnered a career-high 15 tacklesagainst UTEP. He has a team-high 33 tackles on the season, with 19 unassisted tackles and 14 assisted tackles. The sophomore also hasone interception and one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. Derek Ibekwe ranks second on the team in tackles. He amassed12 tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery against the Miners. Overall, Ibekwe has 23 tackles, one tackle for loss and aforced fumble this season. NM State and New Mexico have a long history, with their first meeting occurring on New Year’s Day in 1894,eight years before the first Rose Bowl. The teams played six games against each other before New Mexico became a state. New Mexicoleads the series 69-31-5 and has won the last three meetings. NM State last defeated the Lobos on Oct. 1, 2011 as they captured a42-28 win in Albuquerque. UNM holds a 2-2 record on the season after defeating Wyoming 38-28 last Saturday. Lamar Jordan rackedup 150 rushing yards and one touchdown on 15 carries, while Jhurell Pressley added a touchdown and 109 yards on 17 carries. RichardMcQuarley gained 55 yards and scored two touchdowns on five carries.Storylines NM State’s game captains were Rodney Butler (defense),Alex Trujillo (defense), Robert Wagner (defense), TeldrickMorgan (offense) and Andy Cunningham (offense). NM State wore special commemorative helmets withthe Zia Sun Symbol as the decal. This is the first timethese decals have been worn on an NM State helmet. NM State led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. This isthe first time the Aggies have led at the end of the firstquarter since 2002 when they held a 21-7 lead againstUTEP in Aggie Memorial Stadium. This was the first overtime game for NM State since2005 when they fell 38-37 in double-overtime to Idaho inAggie Memorial Stadium. Greg Hogan scored his first touchdown of the season. Teldrick Morgan had a career-long 77-yard reception inthe third quarter. NM State scored on the next snap. Larry Rose III had a career-long 82 yard rush. On thenext snap, Rogers completed an 8-yard pass to TyrianTaylor for a touchdown.@NMStateFootball #AggieUp Jacob Nwangwa had his first career interception, whichhe returned 41-yards for a touchdown, in the thirdquarter. This was the first time an Aggie returned aninterception for a touchdown since Davon House againstHawai’i in 2010. Quarterback Tyler Rogers had his second career punt,this time a 23-yard punt for a touchback. Freshman Parker Davidson kicked his first career fieldgoal, a 38-yard field goal to give NM State a 16-9 lead.He also made a 44-yard field goal to take the lead inovertime. Tyler Rogers accounted for four touchdowns (3 pass, 1rush). He is the first Aggie to have done this since KennyTurner vs. Fresno State in 2011.

DuringMartin’s second year, the Aggies began the season 2-0 for the firsttime since 1999. After topping Cal Poly in a 28-10 victory, NM Statedefeated Georgia State, 34-31, in its first Sun Belt Conference game.The Aggies also faced I-10 rival UTEP, Rio Grande rival New Mexicoand No. 17 LSU in 2014. Under Martin’s tutelage, Larry Rose IIIbecame the first freshman to rush for over 100 yards against LSUsince 2011. Later in the season, Rose III rushed for 229 yards againstUL-Monroe to become the first NM State player to rush for over200 yards since 2003 when Eric Higgins ran for 218 yards. This featranked Rose III as No. 7 all-time for single game performances.With Martin guiding him, Rose III amassed 1,102 yards over theseason to become the first 1,000 yard rusher since Kenny Turner in2011. This was also the first time a freshman rushed for over 1,000yards since Denvis Manns in 1995.As a team, the Aggies averaged 420.9 yards of total offense pergame after amassing 2,252 rushing yards and 2,899 receiving yardsthrough 12 games. Defensively, NM State had two players amasstriple-digit tackling on the season as Rodney Butler racked up 119tackles and Derek Ibekwe accumulated 102 tackles. In addition, 21student-athletes garnered double-digit tackles on the season. Inall, the defense had 1,028 tackles, fivesacks, 11 interceptions and 10fumble recoveries.NM State went 2-10 in 2013 during Martin’s first season as headcoach after playing one of the toughest schedules in the school’shistory. The Aggies faced five teams that had participated in a bowlgame the previous season while also playing two teams ranked inthe top 15 in the nation.NM State kicked off the 2013 season with a trip to Austin, Texas, toface the 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns and also made a trip to LosAngeles during the season to play No. 13 UCLA. The Aggies’ homeschedule included games versus Minnesota, which was the firstschool out of the Big Ten to play at Aggie Memorial Stadium, andBoston College, which was the first school out of the Atlantic CoastConference to make a trip to Las Cruces.The Aggies averaged 20.9 points per game and 382.2 yards pergame in 2013, including 141.8 yards per game on the ground and240.5 yards per game through the air. The team had a season-high224 yards rushing against Abilene Christian on Oct. 26 and aseason-high 380 yards passing and receiving versus Boston College@NMStateFootball #AggieUpon Nov. 9.Martin’s influence and system began to take shape during the finalfive games of the season as NM State went 2-3 in those games andhad fourth-quarter chances for a win in two of the three losses.Martin would start making an impact on the squad as soon as heaccepted the head coaching position. Before the season began, theAggies had four players placed on six different preseason watch lists,the most for any NM State football team in the school’s history. NMState also had 12 players honored on the College Sports MadnessIndependent Preseason All-Conference team and 11 players on thePhil Steele College Football Preview All-Independent team.During the season, senior safety Davis Cazares was nominated as aBulsworth Trophy finalist, honoring the most outstanding collegiatefootball player who began his career as a walk-on. Linebacker ClintBarnard would be named to the Capital One Academic All-DistrictVII first team. The Aggies would also pick up three FBS IndependentPlayer of the Week nods in 2013 under Martin, Cazares and Barnardon the defensive side and punter Cayle Chapman-Brown on specialteams.At the conclusion of the 2013 season, NM State would place fiveplayers on the All-Independent Football team including Cazares,Trashaun Nixon, Austin Franklin, Andy Cunningham and DavonteWallace.In 2012, Martin left his offensive coordinator position at NM State totake the same position for Boston College out of the ACC. The Eaglesranked 47th in the nation in passing offense, as Martin guided widereceiver Alex Amidon and offensive tackle Emmett Cleary to All-ACChonors. Amidon finished the season ranked 11th among all receiversin the country in receiving yards per game (100.8). He ranked secondamong all ACC receivers in both receptions per game (6.5) andreceiving yards per game.As the offensive coordinator for the Aggies in 2011, Martin helpedNM State rank 47th in the country in total offense and 26th in passing offense. He helped guide the Aggies to a win over Minnesota,the program’s first win against a team from the Big Ten. UnderMartin, the Aggies had three All-WAC selections in wide receiverTaveon Rogers, offensive tackle Davonte Wallace and running backKenny Turner. Quarterback Matt Christian led the Aggies with 2,158yards passing and 15 touchdowns in 2011.With seven seasons under his belt as the head coach at Kent StateUniversity and eight as the offensive coordinator, Martin was instrumental in building a true football program at the university. A totalof 20 Golden Flashes earned All-Mid-American Conference accoladesfrom 2007-10, including Eugene Jarvis, who was atop the activeFootball Bowl Subdivision running backs list with 3,722 career yardson the ground, and Brian Lainhart, whose 17 career interceptionswas also tops among active FBS players.In 2010, Roosevelt Nix was named the MAC Defensive Player of theYear under Martin’s watch. Also under Martin, four players were

selected in the NFL draft including Jameson Konz (2010 - 7th round, Seattle Seahawks), UsamaYoung (2007 - 3rd round, New Orleans Saints), Jack Williams (2008 - 4th round, Denver Broncos)and Julian Edelman (2009 - 7th round, New England Patriots), with Young becoming thesixth-highest pick in the history of the program.From 2002-04 Martin’s teams averaged nearly 30 points per game and posted the highest offensive totals in back-to-back years in school history. From 2002-03 alone, scoring offense increasedby 10 points, touchdowns grew from 24 to 40, total offense was up by more than 40 yards pergame and passing yardage increased by nearly 100 yards per game.Over the past four years, Martin’s offense at Kent State recorded a remarkable 16,907 yards oftotal offense, averaging 422.6 yards per game during that spanned including 26.3 points a game.In 2004, that trend continued as the Flashes’ increased their scoring, touchdowns, passing yardsand total yards per game.In December of 2006, Martin signed a four-year extension that kept him in Blue and Gold through2010. The extension rewarded a 2006 campaign that saw Kent State pull off the fourth-largestturnaround in the nation, improving by five wins over the previous year’s total.Martin arrived at Kent State following 11 seasons at East Carolina University, the last seven ofwhich he was in charge of the team’s offense. He was at ECU for all of Steve Logan’s tenure there,serving as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for two seasons (1992-93), thenanother two years as wide receivers coach (1994-95) before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1996.Included in the performance was a five-game winning streak, including four straight MAC victories - the Flashes’ longest conference streak ever. Furthermore, the nation’s 25th-ranked team intotal defense in 2006, limited Miami and Bowling Green to a combined 17 points as Kent Statewon road games against the RedHawks and Falcons in the same season for the first time since1972. Kent State saw five players earn All-MAC accolades.In addition to his head coaching duties, Martin also served as quarterbacks’ coach and was theoffensive coordinator for all but the 2009 season.Martin is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier quarterback mentors. His list of protégésincludes three-time All-Conference USA selection and current NFL passer David Garrard, record-setting CFL quarterback Marcus Crandell and other pros Richard Alston and Joshua Cribbs,who both played quarterback in college under Martin before switching positions in the NFL.In 2005, Martin’s spread passing attack posted the third-highest yardage total in school historywhile the team’s 15 touchdown passes were the sixth most in a single year at Kent State. TheFlashes also reached the 30-point mark three times in 2005, running the total number of gameswith at least that many points to 16 since 2003.At East Carolina, Martin played a significant role in the development of quarterback David Garrard, who broke 28 school passing records and total offensive records from 1998-01. In addition,Martin coached the top three receivers in ECU history. During Martin’s time at ECU, the teamadvanced to five bowl games; the Liberty Bowl in 1994 and 1995, the GMAC (formerly MobileAlabama) Bowl in 1999 and 2001 and the galleryfurniture.com Bowl in 2000.Prior to joining the staff at East Carolina, Martin was a graduate assistant at the University ofKentucky, his alma mater, from 1986-87 and then spent the 1988-91 seasons at East TennesseeState University, where he coached the running backs his first year, then served as the offensivecoordinator and quarterbacks/wide receivers coach his final three seasons.Martin was a four-year letterwinner at Kentucky from 1981-84, spending time as a part-timestarter at quarterback before injuries limited him to the holder role. A native of Oak Ridge, Tenn.,Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Kentucky in 1985.Martin and his wife Vicki have a daughter, Molly, and two sons, Cory and Bobby.In Martin’s first season, the Golden Flashes posted a 5-6 overall record, winning their final fourgames for the program’s longest winning streak since 1976. The team also finished in fourth placein the MAC East Division with a 4-4 mark while producing three All-MAC players and two honorable mention All-Americans.Martin also handled the offensive play-calling duties and the unit responded to his coaching,scoring 335 points and racking up 4,168 yards, the second- and third-highest totals, respectively,in school history.Under his guidance, the Flashes averaged 30.5 points per game, just the third time in schoolhistory a team averaged 30 or more points. The team also set a single-game scoring mark in its69-17 win over Eastern Michigan Nov. 13. Four times in 2004 the Flashes totaled more than 400yards on offense, including two games over 500.Additionally, in two years tutoring All-MAC quarterback Joshua Cribbs, Martin saw Cribbs developinto one of the top dual threats in the country. Always a talented runner, Cribbs finished his careeras the owner of KSU career records for total offense, passing yardage, touchdowns, points andcompletions. He also ranked fourth nationally in total offense and completed a school-record64.5 percent of his passes. As a team, the Flashes had a completion rate of 62.8 percent, also aschool record.While his spread offensive style is his calling card, Martin revamped his defensive coaching staffand saw that unit go from ranking 12th of 14 teams in the MAC in total defense in 2003 to firstin the league in 2004. It marked the first time since 1987 that the team led the MAC in totaldefense and just the second time since joining the conference in 1951. Kent State also ranked15th nationally in total defense.Martin was named the school’s 19th head coach on March 1, 2004, replacing Dean Pees. Martinjoined the Kent State staff in January 2003 as offensive coordinator. After just one year on thestaff, Martin made an instant impact on the Golden Flashes’ offense.
