Lorne Calvert iscurrently taking a much deserved 3 monthsabbatical.Lorne CalvertBoard ChairDawn Ballantine-DicksonA few years back we celebrated our 100thyear of St. Andrew’s College with a gathering ofalum, faculty and former residents. This yearwe celebrate our 100th graduating class. Wehave not planned great festivities, and yet wemark this milestone with seriousness and joy.Think of it: one hundred times the academiccommittee has approved students with theapproval of their various conferences to go outto serve the wider church. Most went to servecongregations, some became chaplains and others continued their studies and taught. Our students have ministered to familiesbeing reunited or suffering loss during and afterthe First and Second World Wars, in the joy ofthe roaring twenties and the desperation of theeconomic collapse of the thirties, in the hope ofthe fifties when churches were built to accommodate the growing number of children, andthe sixties when these children grew up andmany began to question the existence of God,the need of the church and the value of marriage. Since then we have discussed inclusivelanguage, the need to be treaty people, to protectthe environment; as well, our church hasordained women, gay, lesbian and trans people, and affirmed same sex marriage. We continueto welcome refugees, serve at food banks, question the causes of poverty, be involved in allsorts of social action once called mission, aloneand with other Christian and now multi faithgroups. This is not bad for a hundred years, considering that more was left out of this listthan was put in.We celebrate a hundred years of fashioningcourses to enable students to minister in thechanging United Church within a changingCanadian context. When someone calls thechurch merely a religious institution I knowthey are wrong. This is a community of faith. We grow as believers by allowing our faith to bequestioned. Our understanding of ancient textsgives us an insight to how the people of theirAdvent Meditations that were written by students, faculty and friends of the College will be distributed byemail and on Facebook each day of the Advent season. Ifyou are interested in receiving these meditations, pleaseemail standrews.college@usask.ca to be added to the list.2time understood how the Spirit of our LivingLoving God spoke to them in support or judgment. It takes a community to discern in whatway God is guiding us and we need ministers tohelp engage the community in this holy conversation. We listen to the questions people havebeen asking for a hundred, no, thousands ofyears: Where is God when I need God? Am Iforgiven? Is the world really going to hell? Whatis God calling me or us to do? Why can’t wehave all the answers? Who is our neighbour? How do I live a joyful faithful life? How do Ilove as Jesus loved? For a hundred years ourstudents have left this college equipped toempower this conversation, sometimes it isdone in prayer, in sermons or drama, in Biblestudy, at a board or leadership team, over coffeeat the truck stop, or holding hands across a hospital bed. There have been a lot of changes in the lasthundred years, and yet some things neverchange. One is our need, of God, of love, and ofneighbour, and the other is the assurance thatGod’s love never ends. No matter what challenges the next hundred years present, in struggling to answer these questions together and toassure each other of God’s steadfast love we willfind our identity as the church and as ministersto one another.See more photos fromSt. Andrew’s College events /www.standrews.ca

I still remember in my first year, sitting inthe meeting room at the college, mapping outwhat the next four years of my life were going tolook like. Ministry Residency far exceeded myexpectations in how I’ve grown in my selfawareness, in my call, and in my ministry. I havehad the privilege of journeying with two different and uniquely gifted congregations and I willcherish the time I have spent in each of them.Grande Cache United Church is located145 km north of Hinton, nestled in the northern edge of the Rocky Mountains. During thefifteen months I was there I was able to journeywith them through the joys and challenges ofbeing a small congregation. They welcomed mewith open arms, and through their love andsupport I was able to grow in my creativity forworship leadership (such as worshipping in acircle!), Messy Church, Godly Play, faith studies, and the unique ways in which I was able to offerpastoral care. I will never forget those quadingand hunting trips! With a federal prison in thetown, I was able to grow in ways I never expected as I spent some time in worship with theinmates. God’s love is meant to be shared withall and God’s ways of working through us willnever cease to amaze me!Since March 1st, I have been journeyingwith the wonderful people of Brooks UnitedChurch. This larger rural congregation hasembraced me as part of their Christian familyand I am looking forward to growing in newways with a congregation has a lot to offer inregards to cultural diversity, family and children’s worship, outreach, and gaining wisdomfrom retired clergy. I am truly thankful to theMinistry Residency program at St. Andrew’sbecause it has guided and prepared me for aministry with confidence! I am deeply gratefulto my Educational Supervisor Rev. SharonFoster, my Lay Supervision teams in bothGrande Cache and Brooks, the entire CIES committee in ANWC and the faculty at St. Andrew’sCollege for grounding me in my learning andmy faith as I persevered through the ups and the4downs. You have all inspired me and I will carrythat forward in my ministry.Ordination:June 4, 2016, British Columbia ConferenceBrenda BaileyAppointment:Cumberland United Church, Comox NanaimoPresbytery, British Columbia ConferenceLearning Site:Glengarry East Pastoral Charge (GEPC)Seaway Valley PresbyteryMontreal & Ottawa Conference.Ordination date:May 28th, 2016, Hudson, Quebec.I feel so abundantly blessed to have servedas ministry resident in Alexandria UnitedChurch, St. Andrew’s Dalhousie, Glen Sandfield, and East Hawkesbury United Church. This fourpoint charge welcomed my residency with loveand care. What a great opportunity to learn andgrow in these faithful communities and familiesof God!First Appointment:Johnstown United Church, Seaway ValleyPresbytery.Elaine JulianLearning Site:Cumberland United Church, Comox NanaimoPresbytery, British Columbia ConferenceCumberland United Church is a small butlively and diverse congregation. We worship ina historic building that once sheltered strikingcoal miners, in a village that was built on coalbut is now a growing community that attractsyoung retirees, young families and mountainbikers. A few of our families are long-time residents of Cumberland, but many of our members live in the nearby communities ofCourtenay, Royston and Union Bay and aredrawn to the intimacy and inclusiveness of oursmall church.I am the second student minister to servethis congregation and have benefited from theirprevious experience. The church council andLay Supervision Team were very supportive ofmy learning goals and at the same time theyoffered me a true spiritual leadership role.Together we are discerning our church missionin a place that is very much part of the westcoast “spiritual but not religious” revolution. Iam honoured to be asked to continue to minister among these questing people of faith andhope.Lindsay MohnMy first impression of the town ofMortlach SK was a photo from a lovely restaurant with the most delectable looking crèmebrûlée I had ever seen. This persuaded me thatI should definitely agree to Mortlach UnitedChurch in Chinook Presbytery, SaskatchewanConference, as my residency site. The dessertsat the little restaurant were as delicious as theylooked, but it was the warm welcome in the congregation, the many events happening in thecommunity of 250 people, and the opportunityto spread my ministry wings that provided amemorable 20 months. I was fortunate to besupported by amazing colleagues in ChinookPresbytery and had the most wonderfulEducational Supervisor in Laura Balas. As theminister/admin staff/music director/accompanist I had the opportunity to participate in allareas of the church life, and particularly enjoyedexperimenting with children’s ministry programs. On June 5 in Regina I will be ordainedat the Saskatchewan Conference Service ofPraise, and my first ministry appointment is toserve in Delisle-Vanscoy Pastoral Charge in myhome presbytery of River Bend. St. Andrew’sCollege will continue to be an important part ofmy life and ministry as I remain in the community and serve the church in various ways.Doug NeufeldLearning site:Spirit Hills Pastoral Charge, Tugaske andCentral Butte, SK, Chinook Presbytery,Saskatchewan Conference.I have the honour of being the first studentat this new learning site and the experiencecouldn’t have been more rewarding. SHPC hadbeen going through some significant changes astheir minister of thirteen years had moved on toa new call and they closed the third point of thecharge in Eyebrow, SK. One might expect that acommunity going through such a drasticupheaval might have been considerably dysfunctional but I found them to be energetic, optimistic and just overall gracious. It’s sometimes difficult to acquirebasic amenities on short notice but the feelingof family provides great comfort. The spectrum of ministry experience hasbeen full as I’ve had the opportunity to exerciseall the elements of my learning goals and I’veeven had the benefit of a wonderful ecumenicalrelationship in the nearby community ofEyebrow. I couldn’t have been more blessedwith this appointment and I will miss themdearly as I move on to my first call.Ordination:June 5, 2016, Alberta Northwest ConferenceFirst Call:Trinity United Church, Brandon, MBJason RichardsLearning Site I:Kangnam Community Church, Seoul SouthPresbytery of the Presbyterian Church in theRepublic of KoreaLearning Site II:Oxbow/Alameda Pastoral Charges, Twin ValleysPresbytery, Saskatchewan Conference. My Ministry Residency experience hasbeen one of immense blessing. To be a globaloverseas intern was difficult, but I would nottrade it for anything in the world. I still miss thechildren of my Sunday morning English worship more than I ever could imagine. I missthem calling out ‘Jason Sungyosanim!’(Missionary) whenever they saw me. The biblestudies in Korea were also quite memorable.Witnessing my Korean students of all ages openthemselves up to interpretations never considered, and to personalize and internalize thepresence of God in their midst was an awesomemoment in my ministry.ReturningfromKoreaintoOxbow/Alameda has been quite a change fromthe Korean megachurch! Settling into the quietand the community has been a good way torecharge with what I know ministry to be. Ihave immersed myself in the life here, love thepeople and the vibrant churches open to alltypes of expressions of faith. I love it so muchthat I am only moving down the road when myresidency finishes. My next appointment will beat St. Paul’s International Pastoral Charge, consisting of Estevan and North Portal, SK, as wellas Portal, ND. It is part of Twin ValleysPresbytery in Saskatchewan Conference.Brad WudrichA big thank you to St. Andrew‘s Collegeand the MDiv Ministry Residency Program. As Isit here in Theodore, I am about to complete myresidency, plan for convocation and then ordination in Regina, SK on June 5, I am full of gratitude to the communities of Theodore andSpringside SK. It has been in these two ruralcommunities, where I have been ministering, learning and growing in ministry. At St. Andrew‘s I acquired all the tools andknowledge necessary for ministry, and in the 20month residency part of the program, I was ableto try out those tools, hone and improve myskills and discover my gifts and challenge myassumptions first hand in these communities offaith, knowing that I had the support and backing of both the college and the pastoral charge.During my time in Theodore and Springside, rcelebrations of life, their joys andsorrows; baptizing new lives, remembering lives in Christ lived, uniting couples in marriage, and ofcourse pinching some perogies alongthe way.
