CHECK STARTERQUESTIONS? Hand out - SAL Module for Check Starter

MARSHALFUNCTION?Ensure that those swimmers entered in anevent, and who report ready to start, arerecorded as reporting and passed on to theCheck Starter for the right event.Swimmers need & expect consistency fromsession to sessionNOTE – Marshal & Check Starter are positionswhere officials actively interact with Swimmers

Coming in to SOPAC through the back entrancegives the Marshal a chance to check the setupof the Marshalling Area before they see theReferee, sign on and receive any instructions.Look to see if there areany issuesHow many rows do you want? How many lanes? One row per laneis a good ideaHow many chairs per row?How many heats do you want seated?

Adjust the size of the Marshalling Area according to the needs of the meet

At NSW and Australian championshipswe use separate Marshalling Areas for Males and FemalesAt Area Meets, or other pools, this may not be possible

What do I need to do my job?My pencil caseWater– Marshals arestuck at the tableProgram – a completeone, from the RefereeDecide, with your fellowMarshals, which Programyou will pass on tofollowing Marshals

What do I need from my Pencil Case?A ruler, ortwoRed pensBlue/black pensHighlightersCo-ordinate with anyfellow Marshal

Get to the Marshalling Area earlyand set up your table

If a swimmer reportsearly, before you’refully set up, markthem off on theMaster ProgramDon’t forget totransfer thisinformation to yourHeat Sheetor to pass it on toother Marshals ifthe event is to beswum in anothersession

On your way to the Marshalling Area collect the Heat Sheets from the Chief RecorderThey’re also called UK Timing Sheets, and Judges’ SheetsCheck each event foropportunities toamalgamate or re-seedAn early amalgamationis a good amalgamation

Arrange the Heat Sheets for the first event, or two, on the table

and the Marshalling Area is ready for customers

The swimmers should come to the Marshalling Table to reportSometimes they will tell you their nameOften, they will point to their name for youSometimes they point in errorso, always read, aloud, to them, the name you are goingto markIf you’re not sure of the pronunciation, ask

When they report, mark them off, on the Heat SheetTell them their heat number and lane numberSome swimmers will ask if theycan report for two eventsbecause they are close togetherThey can be ‘half-marked’ toensure they aren’tamalgamated out of their nextevent

Ask the swimmers to sit in the seatsYounger swimmers probably willOlder ones may mill aboutDon’t stress it

Mark, on the Heat Sheets, those swimmers who withdraw, or who are reported as withdrawing

As the time to close the event approaches, call the names of thoseswimmers who have not, yet, reportedWhen the names of all swimmers whohave not reported for the event havebeen called three times, they have beengiven every opportunity to report, andthe event can beCLOSEDMark on the Heat Sheet eachtime you call their name

When does an event close?GR9.1.1 MARSHALLING PROCEDURE:This rule should be printed in the program, along with the starting instructionsAny swimmer who fails to report to the Marshal at leastten minutes prior to the scheduled time for the start ofthe session on that day if entered in the first or secondevents,or at the time of the start of an event at least two eventsprior to the event in which they are enteredshall be deemed to be withdrawn.10 minutes beforethe scheduled starttime2 events beforetheir eventNOTE:For example if entered in Event 9, the swimmer must have reported to theMarshal before the start of the first heat of Event 7.Each heat of 800 metre & 1500 metre events should be considered as an event. This isbecause of the length of these events.Where there are multiple 800 & 1500 metre heats, it is reasonable to ask athletes, or arepresentative, to report early to declare their intention to swim. For State meets withheats & finals, ALL swimmers must confirm their intention to swim in the morning

When closing anevent, mark thefirst Heat Sheetwith the time ofclosingand the number ofthe event and heatthen in the water(if you can see thescoreboard)Sign/initial theHeat Sheet

Report to the Refereeimmediatelyif there is the chance of anamalgamation, or a re-seedTake the relevant HeatSheets and have asuggestion ready

RESEED, AMALGAMATE, COMBINE?What is the difference? Reseed– Omit withdrawals– Reseed the event on the computer– New Marshalling sheets are generated Amalgamate– Move swimmer(s) from slowest heat(s) intovacant lane(s) / lane(s) vacated bywithdrawal(s) Combine– Combine events – CAUTION Records

A Heat Sheet marked for an amalgamation should look something like this

It’s not always easy to check costumes when swimmers reportBut don’t worryThe Check Starter also has a responsibility to check costumes

Check swimmers, as they report forany tapingTake anyswimmerwith tapingto theReferee, fortheirdecision

If the Referee approves the taping, mark this on the Heat Sheet, so thatthe Check Starter knows it has beenapproved.

Let them besome are quiet, preparingSome are chatty and social

CLOSING QUESTIONAt SNSW Meets, when do Marshals close event &then evaluate for Reseed / Amalgamation? If the first two (2) events, ten (10) minutes beforethe session startsOtherwise, when the event two (2) events priorstartse.g. If Event 9, the Marshals will close when Event7 starts

CLOSING MESSAGE - REMINDERThe Check Starter and Marshal positions requirea high level of interaction with AthletesDirectly dealing with swimmers requires CAREand RESPONSIBILITYAvoid any contact and unnecessary conversationwith Swimmers
