TransformingCommunities inChristAnnual Report2013-2014www.diaconalministries.com

Dear Friend,What does transformation look like?Transformation, for Diaconal Ministries Canada (DMC), looks like a communitythat is experiencing the love of Christ. Christ’s love reconciles, harmonizes, andbrings shalom –whether it’s a neighbourhood community, a community ofdeacons, or a community that is created through ministry partnerships.Christ’s love is a powerful love that flows from the cross and into communities. Itflows into communities because individuals, churches, and ministries arepassionate about forming partnerships, walking with their neighbours andworking together for development and growth.By the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, this is how transformationhappens. It brings people together, heals brokenness, and imparts peace.DMC is passionate about motivating and equipping deacons, churches andChristian ministries to work together to help realize a vision of communitiesexperiencing and living in the transforming love of Christ. So what does transformation look like?It looks like 16 deacons from Classis Quinte, meeting and learning together. It looks like Woody Nook Church in Lacombe, AB, hosting the artwork of Métisartist Ovide Bighetty. It looks like East Hill Community Church in Vernon, BC, getting to know theirneighbours through a Community Opportunity Scan.It looks like all these things, and more.So please share with us these glimpses, these celebrations of transformationthat you will find on the pages of our annual report. It is our prayer that they mayimpassion you; and further, that you may use that passion as we work together totransform communities in Christ.Shalom.Hans KaterExecutive Director, Diaconal Ministries Canada

equippingdeaconsHighlights 2013-2014 Currently, there are 18 Diaconal MinistryDevelopers (DMDs) across Canada, readyto serve, support, and bless deacons. Last year, approximately 55% ofdiaconates were contacted by DMDs. 25 churches held an offering for DiaconalMinistries Canada (DMC). 93% of the Diaconal Ministry Shares werecollected. Thank-you! These shares enableDMC to equip deacons across Canada, and help churches do justice and engagetheir communities.Over 700 people attendedDays of Encouragement in Ancaster (ON)Edmonton (AB)Ottawa (ON)DeaconsDialogueWhat happens when a deacon has an idea? She throws it on the table to see if anyonewill bite. When the rookie Diaconal MinistriesDeveloper (DMD) takes the bait, the two ofthem have a planning meeting and, presto,Deacons Dialogue is hatched. On March 27, at Cephas CRC inPeterborough, 16 deacons representing 6churches from Classis Quinte (West) gatheredfor some dialogue on what it means to be adeacon -including the challenges and the joysof the work they do in Christ’s name.Opening devotions from Acts focused on theapostles’ criteria for choosing deacons. Theydidn’t pick practical, “get-it-done” people. They wanted, first of all, those who were full ofthe Spirit and wisdom, like Stephen. Deaconsneed to nurture their spiritual life. The first half hour was spent looking at thedeacon’s mandate in the Form for Ordination. The discussion then moved to the challen S in the past year To date, 70 churches have completed a COSand, by necessity, limited it to the areaimmediately around the church. At this point, the team applied for an Operation Manna grantfrom Diaconal Ministries Canada -specificallyfor churches undertaking a COS.They received the funding and continued tointerview community leaders, accumulatecensus projections, and survey theneighbourhood door-to-door. After sharing theresults of the survey through “A CommunityConversation” public meeting, the teamreported that they were “blown away by theexcitement of the residents to make adifference in their community.”In their report, the team noted that “throughthese efforts and connections, we are startingto see East Hill Community Church become acentral hub in East Hill and through this [COS]we have identified a number of opportunitiesfor ministry.”As the church maintains connections withorganizations and the community, the teamwrites that “opportunities to provide supportshould arise naturally” and that they “can worktogether to build a stronger community in EastHill.” They are “looking forward to seeing howGod will use [the] church to bless East Hill inthe coming months.”—excerpts from the East Hill Community Church FinalCOS Reportwww.diaconalministries.com
