A Message fromThrough the holy mysteries of our redemption, mayalmighty God release you from all punishments in thislife and in the life to come. May he open to you thegates of paradise and welcome you to everlasting joy.Amen.Father AnthonyWroblewskiThe Last Sacraments:When I was a child and would dosomething wrong, I usually waspretty quick to tell my parents thatI was sorry. Of course, my parentswere quick to accept. But, it nevergot me out of doing my time. Whatever punishmentwas meted out still had to be done. In a way, that’swhat happens when we sin. We go to confession, andGod is quick to forgive us our sins. Yet we still have todeal with the temporal punishment that comes due toour sin. That’s why I am grateful that the Lord has given us a chance to receive that purgation even after wedie. It is a beautiful prayer and is meant to speed the penitent soul to the gates of Heaven, removing the punishment due to sin that they have already confessed, or atthe very least, have fully repented from in their hearts. It does not guarantee someone will go straight toHeaven, but it clears everything off the road, so tospeak, so that the soul can freely choose to run towardthe arms of Jesus. The prayer is a supreme act of mercyand has great power, drawing on the authority given toSaint Peter to “bind and loose” (Matthew 16:19). It is agift to a soul on their deathbed and has the added benefit of giving peace to family and friends, assuringthem that they have done all they could do to bring asoul closer to the gates of Paradise. But as a person draws close to death, there is oneblessing in particular that the Church reserves for thismost sacred moment: the Apostolic Pardon. It is a pardon that can be given by any priest and has the specialpower of removing all temporal punishment due to sin.The Apostolic Pardon is typically preceded by the Sacrament of Confession, to the extent that the dying person is able to participate in the sacrament. The priestthen prays this last blessing:So when we recall the great gift that Christ gave us inHis death and Resurrection, we should be grateful thatHe gave the Church this wonderful gift that it can impart when a person readies themselves to see God faceto face. In my 26 years of priesthood, I can attest to thepeace and joy it has brought to countless people, andtheir families, that neared their last breath.Building Maintenance: The Diocese of Duluth's PastoralCenter is filling their building maintenance position. Aswe continue to journey through the “Bread of Life Discourse”, inJohn's gospel we continue to hear Jesus say that he is the Bread ofLife. He promises that the bread of life will be of his own flesh, given for the life of the world and those who partake of it will haveeternal life. How can I not keep talking about it!In today’s Gospel, people in the crowd are upset because Jesustold them that he was the bread of life that came down from heaven. They don’t believe this because they think they know Jesus, butthey don’t. To know a few facts about a person does not necessarilymean that we know that person well. The crowd knows about Jesus’ family but that is not enough to know him intimately. Jesustells us that when we listen to God, we will learn that Jesus comesfrom God, and when we believe that Jesus comes from God, webegin to see things more clearly. This is important for us to understand because there are manydetails about Jesus' life that we don't know. We may know somedetails like who his family is like the Jews in the Gospel. We mayknow when we celebrate His birthday and that he rose from thedead. But knowing these details would not tell us all we need toknow about Jesus either. The only way to know Jesus more intimately is in God’s Word to us, in scripture.Like the lens in a projector can help an image become clearer, scripture helps us understand better Jesus and the gift he gives usin the Eucharist. Scripture teaches us to have faith that Jesus isGod's Son who brings us salvation. That Jesus is from God andthat he gave us his Body and Blood in the Eucharist, which wecelebrate at Mass so that we may have eternal life.Seniors’ ResidenceSchedule a TourContact Gary Stang toplace an ad today!gstang@4LPi.com or(800) 950-9952 x5838(218) 727-8831 StAnns.com330 East Third St Duluth, MN 55805“We are your local non-profit Senior Assistedand Independent Living Community”Siding RoofingPlumbingIndustrial &Commercial(218) 722-3901 2,000 Sign on bonusProviding quality, creative services for people with mental illnessand disabilities, striving for successful independence.
