Page 4Page 21Why Confirmation?PurposeThe purpose of Confirmation is to help students discover whatthey believe and to nurture students in their faith by helpingthem grow in their relationship with Christ.What is Confirmation?Confirmation is a two year program that prepares eachstudent for their Confirmation Day. Students typicallystart Confirmation in the fall of eighth grade. Studentswill confirm their faith during worship in the fall of theirtenth grade year.UMC Anoka uses the re:form curriculum fromSparkhouse Publishers. Re:form is designed to give eachstudent an understanding of the faith which they willconfirm.What is the goal of Confirmation?We have three primary goals in re:form Confirmationministry.1. We will provide instruction to prepare studentsfor their Confirmation Day. One year of Confirmationwill focus on The Bible. We will meet our Old andNew Testament Ancestors. The second year ofConfirmation will focus on elements of our faith.During this year we will learn more aboutour Methodist traditions, the Lord’sPrayer, the Sacraments, the Creed, andthe Ten Commandments.When a student is confirmed at UMCAthey will:- Profess their faith in Christ as their own toThe Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven,Hallowed be thy name,thy kingdom come, thy will be doneon earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread;and forgive us our trespassesas we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation,but deliver us from evil,for thine is the kingdomand the power, and the glory, forever.Amen.The 10 Commandments1. You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3)2. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or animage of anything in the heavens or on earth or in the sea.You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I,the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerateyour affection for any other gods. (Exodus 20:4-5)3. You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God.(Exodus 20:7)4. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.(Exodus 20:8)5. Honor your father and mother. (Exodus 20:12)6. You must not murder. (Exodus 20:13)7. You must not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)8. You must not steal. (Exodus 20:15)9. You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.(Exodus 20:16)10. You must not covet your neighbors house, wife, male orfemale servant, ox or donkey or anything else that belongsto your neighbor. We will provide a safe and nurturingenvironment where the Christian life is modeled byadult leaders. We will strive to engage studentsthrough videos, fun activities and games, projects,service, meaningful conversation. We will worktogether with you as a family, to bring the knowledgeof faith and God’s love to every student, encouragingconfirmands to grow in a personal relationship withJesus Christ that will hold them in their ups and downsof life.3. We will partner with you as parents to teach yourchild about the faith and to be a disciple of JesusChrist. We will walk alongside you to teach them theCreed, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord’sPrayer, and to provide for their instruction in theChristian faith, that they may lead Godly lives. We willstrive to be your best ally in these adolescent years,helping to deepen your relationships with each otherand with God. We will provide tools to connectConfirmation with your home: through studentanti-workbooks and online forums (see more aboutthe online forums on page 16).

Page 6ExpectationsWhat can you expect of UMC Anoka?Support!The staff and leadership of UMC Anoka will do all that wecan to support you during this vital yet sometimes tryingtimes in your youth’s life.Provide a safe, loving and welcoming atmosphere.Confirmation events are designed with every youth inmind. Every effort will be made to welcome youth, tolisten to their individual needs and desires for theConfirmation program and to engage them in learningand activities that will allow them to meet new peopleand make friends.Teach Biblically sound, relevant lessons.We will use the re:form Confirmation curriculum fromSpark House. Each Confirmation session will include ashort video (Encounter), hands-on-activities and discussion(Engage) and small group time for students to present theirpoint of view (Respond) to the sessions theme.Communication between church and home.We will inform you of Confirmation events and happeningsthrough e-mail, e-newsletters, announcements and ourUMCA Youth Facebook page.Page 19PrayerJohn 15:7– But if you remain in me and my words remain inyou, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!Philippians 4:6-7- Don’t worry about anything; instead, prayabout everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for allhe has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, whichexceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard yourhearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.Sharing your FaithMatthew 28:19-20- “Therefore, go and make disciples of allnations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Sonand the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all thecommands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with youalways, even to the end of the age.”Romans 1:16– For I am not ashamed of this Good Newsabout Christ. It is the power of God at work , saving everyonewho believes– the Jew first and also the Gentile.Trust in GodMatthew 6:33-34- Seek the Kingdom of God above all else,and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring it’sown worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.How we LiveMicah 6:8– He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.And what does the Lord require of you? Page 7Page 18Life VersesGod’s word is our hope and strength in times of troubleand the foundation on which we, as Christian base our lives.All confirmation students will be expected to learn 10 Bibleverses by heart. Below are some recommended verses!Christ the CenterJohn 3:16-17- For God loved the world so much that hegave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes inhim will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his son intothe world not to judge the world, but to save the worldthrough him.2 Corinthians 5:17– This means that anyone who belongsto Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; anew life has begun!Galatians 2:20- My old self has been crucified with Christ.It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live inthe early body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved meand gave himself for me.God’s WordJoshua 1:8– Study this Book of Instruction continually.Meditate on it day and night so that you will be sure to obeyeverything written in it. Only then will you prosper andsucceed in all you do.2 Timothy 3:16-17– All Scripture is inspired by God and isuseful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what iswrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong andteaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare andequip his people to do every good work.What is the role of the parent/guardian?Make Confirmation attendance a priority for yourchild.In order for your child to learn about the faith they willconfirm, they need to be present at Confirmation. Wehope that Confirmation will be a priority for your familyand that you’ll instill in your child that attendance atConfirmation is not optional.Make worship a priority for your family.The purpose of Confirmation is to prepare your childto confirm his/her faith and become a disciple of Christ.Worship is central to what it means to be Christian.Worship notes are meant to engage your child in theworship service, and can also provide your family withopportunities for faith-related conversations.Commit to daily faith conversationsEach student will have an Anti-workbook with pages thatwill be completed at Confirmation. An online forum willalso be available with session overviews and challengequestions. Please practice daily faith conversations withyour youth at dinner time, before bed or before school –find 10-15 minutes that works for your family daily! Usethis time to: Share highs and lows Read a short passage from scripture Talk about the verses you read, highs/ lows and thechallenge for the week Pray together Bless each otherTying faith to home is a vital part of faith developmentin young people and Confirmation ministry and will mostcertainly be a blessing to your family. Daily faithconversations help to keep communication open in thetough years of adolescence and beyond.Continued next page

Page 8Be involved in your student’s Confirmationexperience.Parent/guardian involvement is important in Confirmationand in each student’s faith journey. Parents/guardians arewelcome at Confirmation anytime.What is expected of each student?Attend Confirmation.Students are required to participate each Wednesday inthe large group time and in hands on activities and smallgroup discussion.Participate in Community Events.These events are just as much a part of Confirmation asare the regular Confirmation sessions and attendance isexpected. See page10 for a description of these events.Complete sermon notes.Twenty sermon notes are required for Confirmationstudents. Sermon notes may be completed during Sundaymorning worship, at another church service, or online ifyou listen to sermons or podcasts. Worship note pagesare available by the Youth Bulletin Board. Completednotes can be turned into the Family Ministries boxoutside the Family Ministries office (room 203). Sermonnotes should be answered honestly and with well thoughtout answers to be counted towards completed notes.Any special circumstances that prevent regular worshipattendance should be discussed with the Family MinistriesDirector. Worship note worksheets can be from anotherchurch but should be accompanied by a bulletin from thatchurch.Page 17Retreats/ EventsConfirmation/Youth RetreatAll Confirmation students are required to attend theConfirmation retreat. We will travel together to theMetropolis Hotel/Chaos Waterpark in Eau Claire fora weekend of fun, community building, and learning.This weekend will be an opportunity to be more presentin our every day lives, allowing God to use us in greatways. This is a required retreat for Confirmation studentsand open to all other senior high youth and young adults.The Youth Retreat will take place on October 11-13 andcosts 90. If you’d like to be a chaperone, let Dave know!

Service projects should includetwo church projects and two community projects. If youare unsure about the validity of an activity for servicehours, contact the Coordinator of Family Ministries tofind out. Upon completion of a service activity, studentsshould complete a service report form available from theworship notes box in the main office. These forms canbe returned to the box labeled “Sermon Notes andService Reports.”Greeters/ Ushers/ Readers during Sunday worshipservices.All students are encouraged to participate in worshipservices by greeting, reading scripture, playing music,or ushering. While this is not a requirement forConfirmation, it is a great experience to get involved asan adult member of the church. Students and theirfamilies can sign up for these opportunities in theCommunity Room. The first Sundays of the month arebest for this!Remember your Anti-workbook, Bible andOffering for every Confirmation session.All students are expected to bring their Bible and ajournal to every Confirmation session. We will use theseweekly so it is important to have them with you. It is thestudent’s responsibility to make sure they have theirBible and journal each week. The cost to replace a Bibleis 20. Students are also encouraged to bring offeringeach week which goes to a charity of the Confirmands’choice. This helps get them in the habit of beinggenerous and also helps those in need!
