CONTEXT: The City of VeniceVenice is a unique city with origins in 400 AD. Elizabethans(1558-1603) were fascinated by Venice and it featured in many worksof literature of the period. It is built on a series of islands that cover alagoon - this means that it has no roads but instead uses a networkof canals as a means of transportation.

Understanding SettingIn order to understand the events of the play fully, you must have anunderstanding of the CONTEXT of the place in which the events are set.Centre of Finance andCommerceVenice was famous for its Rialto a world centre for trade andcommerce built over and aroundthe Grand Canal. It was known asthe ‘Port to the East’ and itsmerchants became extremelywealthy.Dependent on Sea BorneTradeVenice is an insular country thatdepended on the sea for thetransportation of goods.Good CreditVe n i c e e n j o y e d a s t r o n greputation throughout the worldfor strictly enforcing its laws.
