Thanks again for yoursupport!John Kendall, CLT PresidentEd Chapin Gets His Due RewardsIt’s been a long time coming, but EdChapin, the Calusa Land Trust’s headRanger and Chief Land Steward washonored on December 6th with asurprise dedication of one of thenewest parcels named as the “EdChapin Preserve”. The parcels were acollection of lots to the south of LittleSmokehouse Bay, many of whichwere formerly owned by theHelvenston Family.Ed was successfully kept in the darkabout the renaming until the cover forthe preserve sign was taken down byCLT President John Kendall. Manyother Board of Directors attended theceremony including Frank Potter,Cathy House, Rad Hazen and ofcourse, Ed Chapin.Ken SterlingA native Southerner, Ken, 48, andhis two teen-aged sons are relativelynew residents of Pine Island, however,he has jumped at the opportunity tovolunteer to serve at CLT work parties2

It’s safe to say that Ed was shocked when he first read the sign bearing hisname, but days later when he told me the story, he showed an appreciativegrin. Ed is one of the plank holders, or founding members of the Calusa LandTrust and the amount of work Ed has performed since those early days maynot be able to be calculated, but it can be appreciated.Greg Lignelli, Rad Hazen, Ed Chapin, John Kendall, Cathy House and Frank PotterAmong his many tasks is first and foremost acting in the role of Head LandSteward, scheduling work parties on CLT preserves with willing volunteers.Anyone who has herded cats knows how interesting this can be.Ed also leads the popular Peter Ordway Mangrove Adventure paddling tripsthat show off some of our more inaccessible preserves from the water viakayak or canoe.Look for Ed’s column in each newsletter for a list of both upcoming workparties and paddles. It is planned in the near future to create a paddlelaunching site so that the public may enjoy the various preserves, both theCLT’s and the Lee County 20/20’s that are to be found in the area of LittleSmokehouse Bay.3

CallEd Chapin at 239-218-7531News of the Strange - Gas Can BorersIn the last three years some residents of theFlorida Panhandle have been finding small1/16th inch holes in their plastic gasoline cans. The cause of this mystery is the Camphor ShotBorer (Cnestus mutilates [Blandford]), which is avery small beetle that normally attacks the treesfor which they are commonly named.Native to Asia, they were first discovered here inMississippi in 1999 but the borers (aka: Gas CanBorers) may be found as far north as Ohio andWest Virginia and west through Texas. Onetheory is the addition of ethanol to gasoline hasmade the mixture hard to pass up for the tinybeetles. Volatile compounds such as ethanol5

are given off by stressed or woundedtrees. Trees in such conditions areeasier for the beetles to attack andovercome the trees defensemechanisms.Other local hosts include the loblollypine, sweet gum, chinaberry andsome native cherry and plum trees. For the trees, the borers introduce afungus that causes the damage. Forhome and boat owners, thedamages are possible fuel leaks on land or sea. From: PestPro Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 5, p.15 or http://pestpromagazine.com/dl/issues/SeptOct 2015 web.pdfWildflowers in bloom at Wigert Barron PreserveBalduina angustifoliaYellow ButtonsCarphephorus corymbosusFlorida PaintbrushPolygala nanaCandyroot orLow bachelors buttons6
