Lesson 1Understanding SalvationI.What is man’s condition outside God?A. Man is and a slave to it.Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin,and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned Romans 5:12While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for bywhom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. II Peter 2:19The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they havedone abominable works, there is none who does good. The LORD looks downfrom heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt;there is none who does good, no, not one. Psalm 14:1-3Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.Psalm 51:5All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way;and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.I John 1:8B. Man has no toward God. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and menloved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. John 3:19The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?Jeremiah 17:9C. Man has no of the things of God.But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they arefoolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.I Corinthians 2:14D. Man’s mind and were affected by this separation from God.To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelievingnothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. Titus 1:15Discipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler3

And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yetnow He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight Colossians 1:21-22E. Man is spiritually .And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins Ephesians 2:1F. Man is on the road to .There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.Proverbs 14:12If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; andthey gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:6 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on thosewho do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished witheverlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of Hispower II Thessalonians 1:8-9When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, thenHe will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him,and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep fromthe goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left .Then He will also say to those on the left hand, “Depart from Me, you cursed, intothe everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:31-33, 41He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will becondemned. Mark 16:16II.Who is the source of salvation?A. A sinful man does not have the to redeem another sinful man.None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom forhim Psalm 49:7He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatlymoved. Psalm 62:21. We redeem ourselves through additional sacrifices ofanimal blood. For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the veryimage of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offercontinually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then wouldthey not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, wouldhave had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is aDiscipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler4

reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls andgoats could take away sins And every priest stands ministering daily andoffering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. Butthis Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at theright hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made Hisfootstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are beingsanctified. Hebrews 10:1-4, 11-142. We be redeemed by our ancestors.Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heavengiven among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12B. God must take the to redeem man.1. God is our salvation. Also draw out the spear, and stop those who pursue me. Say to my soul, “I amyour salvation.” Psalm 35:3Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation.Psalm 62:12. Jesus is the by which we can be savedJesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to theFather except through Me.” John 14:6III.How did God provide salvation for us in Jesus?Just as thoroughly as sin contaminated mankind, God’s salvation will deliver or healmankind. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your wholespirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.I Thessalonians 5:23A. Jesus came to earth to live a life of to God.Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form ofGod, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of noreputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.Philippians 2:5-7B. Jesus gave His life as a for our life.Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered himstricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for ourtransgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought uspeace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, haveDiscipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler5

gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on himthe iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open hismouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearersis silent, so he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:4-71. We would receive His .For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become therighteousness of God in Him. II Corinthians 5:212. He would receive our of being dead and separated fromGod.For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died forall, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longerfor themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.II Corinthians 5:14-15For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life, through JesusChrist our Lord. Romans 6:233. Jesus’ death would provide for a regeneration or of ourold spirit.Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one isborn again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him,“How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into hismother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom ofGod.” John 3:3-5IV.What must we do to receive this salvation?A. We must believe in Jesus through faith. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessedby the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith inJesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all havesinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His gracethrough the redemption that is in Christ Jesus whom God set forth as apropitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previouslycommitted, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might bejust and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:21-26B. We must believe that Jesus died and rose again. Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, whichalso you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you holdDiscipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler6

fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For Idelivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sinsaccording to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again thethird day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then bythe twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whomthe greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep.I Corinthians 15:1-6C. We must receive Jesus into our heart and mind to become children of God.He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as receivedHim, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe inHis name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the willof man, but of God. John 1:11-13D. We must acknowledge Jesus as Lord of our lives. .that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heartthat God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart onebelieves unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made untosalvation. Romans 10:9-10V.From what must we saved?A. We are saved from sin.And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He willsave His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21B. We are saved from emptiness and the traditions of men. knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers I Peter 1:18C. We are saved from our enemies. That we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us Luke 1:71D. We are saved from the curse of the law.Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us(for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” Galatians 3:13E. We are saved from wickedness and lawlessness. who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed andpurify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.Luke 19:10G. We are saved from fear. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is thestrength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1H. We are saved from condemnation. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who donot walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of theSpirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.Romans 8:1-2VI.What is the nature of God’s Salvation?A. God’s salvation is abundant.O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, and with Him isabundant redemption. Psalm 130:7B. God’s salvation is eternal. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all whoobey Him Hebrews 5:9C. God’s salvation is available now.For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvationI have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day ofsalvation. II Corinthians 6:2D. God’s salvation is for all. Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in thename of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of theHoly Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who areafar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:38-39E. God’s salvation is both complete and progressive.1. Our spirits are saved when we are born again. But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. I Corinthians 6:17But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwellsin you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.Romans 8:9Discipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler8

2. Our souls are being saved through the work of the Holy Spirit insanctification. not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to Hismercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of theHoly Spirit Titus 3:53. Our bodies will be saved or redeemed at the Second Coming of the Lord. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even weourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, theredemption of our body. Romans 8:28Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all bechanged—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For thetrumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall bechanged. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal mustput on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and thismortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that iswritten: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your sting? OHades, where is your victory?” I Corinthians 15:51-55VII. How should we respond to this great salvation?A. We must not this great salvation. how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first beganto be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him Hebrews 2:3B. We must be glad and in His salvation.Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but ratherrejoice because your names are written in heaven. This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that Godis light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship withHim, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk inthe light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the bloodof Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. I John 1:5-7E. Acts 4:20Discipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler10

Lesson 2RepentanceI.What does it mean for a person to repent?A. Repentance is a change of mind resulting in a complete .1. The word “repent” means to turn around and go the other way regarding amatter. It refers to an internal change of heart and mind that results in a newdirection for the whole life.2. Repentance is translated from an Old Testament Hebrew word meaning toturn back, to return, and to recover and from a New Testament Greek wordmeaning a fundamental changing of the mind.3. Charles Finney defined repentance as an “intellectual and hearty giving up ofall controversy with God upon all and every point. It implies a conviction thatGod is wholly right, and the sinner is wholly wrong, and a thorough and heartyabandonment of all excuses and apologies for sin.”Therefore thus says the LORD: “If you return, then I will bring you back; youshall stand before Me; if you take out the precious from the vile, you shall be asMy mouth. Let them return to you, but you must not return to them.Jeremiah 15:19B. Repentance is not to be seen as something negative but as ainto God’s salvation. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted II Corinthians 7:10aII.What are some wrong concepts about repentance?A. Repentance is NOT feeling “ ” or sorry for what I have done. And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, hesent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Now as he reasonedabout righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid andanswered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.”Meanwhile he also hoped that money would be given him by Paul, that he mightrelease him. Therefore he sent for him more often and conversed with him. Butafter two years Porcius Festus succeeded Felix; and Felix, wanting to do the Jewsa favor, left Paul bound. Acts 24:24-27B. Repentance is NOT feeling bad or a having a sense of becauseof the consequences of our sin.Discipleship, Student Manual Bill Scheidler11

The Bible calls this kind of regret “worldly sorrow.” Worldly sorrow is simplybeing sorry for “getting caught” or being sorry for the resulting consequences ofour sin but not necessarily being sorry for the actual crime or offense committed(II Cor. 7:10). worldly sorrow brings death. II Corinthians 10bC. Repentance is NOT saying “I am sorry” or even owning up to orwhat I have done.D. Repentance is NOT asking for forgiveness or paying outof a sense of guilt to pacify an offended party.E. Repentance is NOT external change or of lifestyle with noheart change.F. Repentance is NOT merely “ ” in God.You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--andtremble! James 2:19G. Repentance is NOT “going to church” or being (Mt. 3:8; IITim. 3:5).All of these things mentioned above may be aspects of true repentance, but they areNOT true repentance in and of themselves.III.Why is Repentance necessary?A. God has commanded us to repent (Acts 17:30-31).Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all meneverywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain.

Like evangelism, the word “discipleship” is not in the Bible.3 By adding “ship” to it, discipleship literally means “the state of learning” or “following a teacher.” Some people like to refer to it as apprenticeship, which we think is a good description.4 At its roots, Christian discipleship means to follow and learn from Jesus.
