Sunday, November 5, 2017A GOOD EXAMPLEOF PUTTINGONE’S“ORDINARY”ABILITY AT THESERVICE OF OURPARISHNot all of the goodworks that people aredoing for our parishare “visible.” One ofthose areas is theMinistry of the AltarLinens, consisting oftwelve women whoregularly care for thelinens used at Mass.Perhaps, thesewomen don’tassociate what theyare doing as a form ofministry. It is, and asignificant one at that!I want to express mygratitude to theseselfless “Servants ofthe Lord: TheresaSquillace,” JudyLambert, JoannaVasilescu, JoanneBonke, MariannaAntonacci, ChristinaMcCarthy, MarySoley, MickeyO’Donnell, GladysSteltz, MarianneD’Alto, ElizabethNabet, MargaretHubbard and BellaCeraso, for thewonderful service theyprovide for us in thisministry. If you’d like to becomepart of this ministryplease contact BellaCeraso at (516) 7314209.Page Three“Stewardship as a Way of Life”In the past I have written and spoken about how words areimportant. Words like “Catholic” and “parishioner” are amonga number of nouns to which I am referring.“I am a Catholic” or “I am a parishioner” are commondesignations, which identify who we are. I’d like to suggestthat there are deeper spiritual and biblical words that betteridentify us. Two are “disciples” and “stewards.”Now, I am not suggesting that seeing oneself as a “Catholic”or “parishioner” is incorrect. They just don’t tell the completestory of who we are nor necessarily point to a sense ofpersonal spirituality.Thankfully, we have a greater access to the Word of Godwith a wider variety of the Scriptures being read at Mass, more people are attending Scripture study groups and stillothers are reading the Bible on their own. All of this is havinga wonderful impact on those who are attentive to God’s Wordand manifesting in them a deeper biblical spirituality.Jesus speaks about “discipleship” and being “stewards.” Thedisciple is one who “listens” to Jesus and “learns” from histeachings putting what he/she has learned into practice. TheEvangelist St. James says, “What good is it, dear brothersand sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by youractions? (James 2:14)The “steward” is the one who recognizes that everything thathe/she has is a gift from God. The appropriate response tothis is gratitude to God for his gifts, using these gifts (ourtime, talents and financial resources) not only for our selvesbut also for God’s purposes and at the service of others.Ultimately, you and I are being invited by Jesus to live as“intentional disciples” and as “good stewards.” Intentionaldisciples make a daily commitment to follow Jesus. What talents or skills do you possess that can be used for thebenefit of others? So often, many people don’t make aconnection between their abilities, talents and skills and thepotential for placing them at the service of others. What areyours? How can you use them for others in loving service?435 St. James

Page FourThe Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary TimeWhat’s Happening in Faith Formation? This week our Level Three students are learning We Are the Church, and that the Apostles led theChurch. The Apostles lived with Jesus for three years. They ate and drank with him and they heard his wordsevery day. They saw him heal the sick and raise the dead. Where ever they went, the Apostles beganto tell everyone about Jesus Christ. There is a wonderful book in the New Testament that tells thestory of the work of the Apostles in the early Church. It is called Acts of the Apostles. In that book,we read that the early Christians listened to the teachings of the Apostles and looked after one another“according to each one’s need.” (Acts of the Apostles 2:45) The Church grew because Christiansfollowed Jesus, loving and serving one another.Question of the week: How do our lives reflect the lives of the Apostles?November 2nd is All Souls Day (The commemoration of all the faithfully departed). For the whole month of November our students will be praying for the Holy Souls of the faithfullyDeparted. The prayer they will be praying is:Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen. The prayer is short but powerful. The parents of our students can pray this prayer together each night.Upcoming Events:Monday, November 6: Second and Final Level 8 Retreat, in the Church from 6pm to 9pm.Thursday, November 9: Retreat for Level 7 parents in the Church from 7:00pm to 8:00pmSaturday, November 18: First Penance for the Level 2 students in the Church, 12noon and 1:30pm.OUR PROGRAM STILL NEEDS SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS – please contact our office if you canhelp out. Macbeth: a tribute to King James I Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606, during King James’ reign. King James was a devout advocate of the “Divine Right of Kings.” The setting is Scotland, King James’ homeland. Banquo was an ancestor of James and is shown in the play to be a virtuous person.
