September 27, 2016Dear Parents/Guardians:Thank you for supporting your student’s participation in School House Rock live Jr. I wanted totake a moment to highlight some of the countless benefits of putting on a show with students.Having a regular creative outlet is not just part of a well rounded education – it is essential for astudent’s emotional health and well being. Producing a show brings the arts together andprovides growth opportunities for all varieties of learners. For example, kinesthetic learnersengage their bodies through dance, linguistic learners dive into the written and spoken word, spatial learners tackle set and costume design, and musical learners revel in the show’s score.Besides being incredibly fun, musical theatre helps young people develop many of the skillsnecessary for success in today’s world:Self-Confidence: Throughout the rehearsal and performance process, young performersdiscover how to take creative and emotional risks and learn to trust their abilities.Literacy: Students increase reading and writing skills at their own pace by immersingthemselves in the story, reading and re-reading their scripts, memorizing their lines and takingnotes at rehearsal.Communication: During rehearsals, students learn how to articulate their thoughts andquestions and carefully listen to direction in order to improve their performances.Imagination: Theatre is most dynamic when the imaginations of its participants are fullyengaged. Students make countless interpretive choices in design and performance to create adetailed, fictional world for their audiences.Empathy: Through character work and story creation, young performers explore the lives ofothers. First-hand perspectives of new circumstances challenge prejudices and aid in thedevelopment of well-rounded students and citizens.Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: The amount of work required to successfully put on ashow makes all participants valuable troubleshooters. Whether inventing mnemonics toremember lines, adjusting staging to show off everyone’s faces, or mastering a tricky scenechange, students have countless opportunities to creatively tackle challenges.Self-Discipline: Through prompt attendance at rehearsals and learning lines, music andchoreography on schedule, students acquire valuable self-discipline techniques and becomereliable and trustworthy members of an ensemble.

Community Awareness: A theatrical production provides ample opportunities to connect withour families and neighbors. Students can engage parents, community centers and local vendorsto help create sets, props, costumes and publicity.Public Speaking: Whether performing for their peers during rehearsal or for their school andlocal community during a performance, students gain expertise and confidence speaking in frontof a group.Curricular Integration: A musical provides a rich and engaging springboard for students toexplore many subjects in their classrooms and discover connections among various modes oflearning.Teamwork: Theatre requires extensive creative input from all its participants. Students buildensemble by working together to rehearse, construct, promote and perform their show. Everyrole – whether onstage or behind the scenes – is vital for the show’s success. As you can see, our students will gain valuable life skills through their participation in thisproduction. We’re looking forward to jumping into rehearsals and seeing you on opening night,if not before!Thank you for your continued support of your student during this educational experience.Sincerely,Scott D. MillerExecutive Director

Dear Parents of School House Rock Live Jr:We hope this musical production will be a great opportunity for your young star! We really appreciateyour help in getting your actor to and from rehearsal, stopping by to drop off those snacks and goodies, and being so supportive of the cast.In the next few months, we will be putting the final touches on our musical. Honesdale has beenproducing musical productions for many years and our patrons who come see our musical productionsevery year graciously support our program. When the patrons frequent the theatre, we hope this year we will be able to have a basket raffle, bakedgoods, and refreshments available to everyone in our grand hall. This is not only nice for our patrons, but provides needed fundraising for our theatre group called the Friends of the Operetta. In the past, allof these items are kindly donated by our parents of our theatre students. Therefore, we need your help! This year we are asking everyone in the cast to provide one raffle basket item (not to exceed 20), onebaked good item (individually wrapped – ready to sale), a pack of bottled soda (12oz), or case of waterbottles. The basket could be a basket for the movies, an ice cream party, or other great ideas you mayhave. If you can’t think of a basket idea; gift cards also make great raffle items! If you can’t provide abasket or gift card, we can always use your help in the hall by selling chances or baked good items. Withthis in mind, please help us, all monies raised directly benefit your student(s) participating in the musicalproduction. We ask that all items be dropped off in the Grand Hall during the week of our final technical rehearsals,by Thursday, November 17, 2016.In closing, thank you so much for all of your help and support!
