bra t i n gyearsce leVoices for Children of Broward CountyCurrently, there are over 3,400 children in Broward County who are in the care of theState, many having been removed from their homes, due to abuse, neglect orabandonment. Taken away from their parents or caregivers for their own protection,these children enter the world of foster care and the dependency system with only abagful of possessions and in need of a stable and nurturing placement.Voices for Children of Broward County (Voices) is part of a unique collaboration withthe 17th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program. Our goal is to work with everychild that has an open and active dependency court case, and to meet each of his or heressential needs during this transitional period and to give the child a voice throughoutthe entire court proceedings by appointing him or her with a volunteer Guardian adLitem.Voices was established in 2011, due to a gap in state funding for the Guardian ad LitemProgram. The allocated funding was not enough to fully cover all of the programmingneeds and does not cover items such as emergency needs of the children assigned to theprogram; moreover, it does not include funding for goods, services andprograms purchased for the children to help bring normalcy to their lives.Since then, Voices has been investing in the lives of young people who have faced thedeep wounds from a crisis of parenting. In helping them to secure the basic life needs,essential education, and social experiences they equally deserve, we are ensuring thateach young person in the care of the State, in Broward County, discovers their ownresilience and strength. Voices is committed to leveling the playing field for youth inthe dependency system, so that every child is included, has an opportunities to prosperin, and contribute to society.

Advertise—Make sure you advertise your drive. Use theflyers provided in this kit to spread the word. Mention thedrive in a newsletter or email potential participants. Createan event on Facebook to help get the word out. Considerusing Twitter or other social media sites to communicatewith participants. Make it fun—Consider making your drive a competition toencourage donations! Develop a game, Facebook page, orother interactive aspect for your drive. Be creative and havefun!
