Panther2200 South 5th Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57105APRIL 2017Cultural ResponsivenesBy Dr. Brian Maher, SuperintendentWalk through the halls of any of our schools and you will no cean eclec c mix of students. The tall students, the s ll-growing students, the out-going, the shy, the athletes, the musicians, the ar sts, the booklovers. The Sioux Falls School District is a diverse community of learners. And, while diversity can be defined in many ways, conversa ons nearlyalways bring us back to the topic of race.Patrick Henryphone numbersMain afeteria367-7642Each year for the last 20 years, the Sioux Falls School District has graduallybecome more reflec ve of our world. One third of the 24,000 students we serve –8,000 students – iden fy as a race other than Caucasian. Many have moved to SouthDakota to escape war and other atroci es in their own country. Some have come withtheir families from other parts of the United States to enjoy the safety of Sioux Falls andthe success of our business climate. This has provided the District with an opportunityto build a school culture that celebrates differences while realizing that, as humans, weall bring equal value to our community.Yet, up un l this point, our efforts “develop strategies to enhance a culturallyresponsive workforce” have fallen short. Now, that specific priority statement isembedded in the School Climate and Culture sec on of the District’s Strategic Plan.I’m proud to say our team is already making strides in this area. The Sioux FallsSchool District has iden fied a “Think Tank” – or group of school leaders - who willpar cipate in a summer conference on diversity thanks to a partnership with the Schoolof Educa on at the University of South Dakota. Other professional developmentopportuni es are also in the works. We hope to hire quality administrators, teachers, educa on assistants and other professionals with diverse backgrounds to serve in ourschools. The Dean of the USD School of Educa on, Dr. Donald Easton-Brooks, haspledged his full support to come alongside the District as we meet with our own diversestudents and encourage them to consider a career in educa on. These mee ngs arealready underway. Students interested in becoming educators will travel to Vermillionthis spring to tour the USD campus and visit with professors and students. A highschool class to develop future teachers is also a real possibility. Our community is changing. And, the public schools are choosing to change withit. We are excited to see where these efforts lead us.
