If you believe youare suffering from severe dehydration, consult ahealthcare professional immediately.Under normal blood concentrations andconditions, the following should not significantlyaffect results: Elevated blood triglycerides Reducing substances such as uric acid andascorbic acid Acetaminophen Dopa Methyldopa L-dopa TolbutamideDO NOT CHANGE YOUR TREATMENT BASED ON ASINGLE RESULT THAT DOES NOT MATCH HOW YOUFEEL OR IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOUR TEST RESULTCOULD BE INCORRECT.If you are experiencing symptoms that are notconsistent with your blood glucose test resultsand you have followed all instructions describedin this owner’s manual, contact your healthcareprofessional.Owner’s Manual8Owner’s Manual9

PRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterPRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterTest results below 60 mg/dL (3.3 mmol/L) indicatelow blood glucose (hypoglycemia). Test resultsgreater than 240 mg/dL (13.3 mmol/L) indicatehigh blood glucose (hyperglycemia). If yourresults are below 60 mg/dL or above 240 mg/dL,repeat the test, and if the results are still below 60mg/dL (3.3 mmol/L) or above 240 mg/dL (13.3mmol/L), consult your healthcare professionalimmediately.Inaccurate results may occur in severelyhypotensive individuals or patients in shock.Inaccurate results may occur for individualsexperiencing a hyperglycemic-hyperosmolarstate. Please refer to the test strip package insertfor additional important information.Alternate Site Testing (AST)There are important limitations to Alternate SiteTesting (AST). Please consult your healthcareprofessional before performing AST.What is AST?Alternate Site Testing (AST)means you can use partsof the body other thanyour fingertips to checkyour blood glucose levels.Prodigy meters allow you totest on your palm, forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh.See Figure 1.What is the Advantage?Fingertips feel pain moreFigure 1readily because they are full ofnerve endings (receptors). At other body sites, nerve endings are not so numerous and you willnot feel as much pain as you will experience atthe fingertip.Owner’s Manual10Owner’s Manual11

PRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterPRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterWhen to use AST?Food, medication, illness, stress and exercise canaffect blood glucose levels. Capillary blood atthe fingertip reflects these changes faster thancapillary blood at other sites. Therefore, if youare testing your blood glucose level during orimmediately after a meal, physical exercise orstressful event, take the blood sample from yourfingertip only.*To increase accuracy when using AST, rubthe puncture site before extracting blood. Analternate site device is required to perform AST. Ifyou do not have an alternate site device but wouldlike to use one, please contact Customer Care at1.800.243.2636.Use AST only:v Two hours or more after your last meal.v Two hours or more after taking insulin.v Two hours or more after exercise.v During a relaxed and calm state.Do not use AST if:v You have reason to believe you havehypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.v Your routine glucose results are oftenfluctuating.v You are pregnant.Owner’s Manual12Owner’s Manual13

PRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterPRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterAbout Prodigy Test StripsKey Functions of the Test StripAll Prodigy meters measure the amount of sugarin the blood, commonly referred to as bloodglucose. Blood is applied to the opening of theabsorbent channel on the end of the test stripand is automatically drawn into the test strip. The test strip consists of the following parts:Please refer to the “Performing a Blood Glucose Test”section for complete instructions.Important Test Strip Information Store test strip packages in a cool, dry placebetween 39 F–104 F (4 C–40 C). Keepaway from direct sunlight and heat. Do notrefrigerate. Do not store in your car. Store your test strips in their original vialonly. Do not transfer them to a new vial orany other container.Absorbent ChannelApply a drop of blood and it will bedrawn in automatically. With clean, dry hands you may touch the teststrip anywhere on its surface when removingit from the vial or inserting it into the meter.Confirmation WindowShows whether enough blood has been drawninto the test strip’s absorbent channel. Do not clean the testing site with alcohol.Instead, wash the test site thoroughly withsoap and water only.Test Strip HandleHold this part to insert the test strip into the teststrip port on the meter. Immediately use a test strip after removing itfrom the vial, replace the vial cap and close ittightly to prevent exposure to moisture.Contact BarsInsert this end of the test strip into the meter.Push it in firmly until it will not go any further.Figure 2Owner’s Manual14Owner’s Manual15

PRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterPRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose Meter Only apply a blood sample or a controlsolution sample to the test strip’s absorbentchannel. Applying other substances to thetest strip’s absorbent channel will causeinaccurate results. Record the discard date on the vial labelwhen you first open it. Discard remainingtest strips 90 days after the first openingdate. Do not use test strips beyond the expirationdate printed on the package. After removing the test strip from the vial, insert it directly into the meter. Do not laythe test strip on any other surface.Intended UseProdigy blood glucose monitoring systemsare intended for use outside the body (in vitrodiagnostic use only) and should only be used forblood glucose (blood sugar) testing with freshcapillary whole blood samples. These systems are intended for use in the homeand in clinical settings and should not be usedfor the diagnosis of diabetes or for the testingof newborns. Consult your healthcare provider ifunusual readings occur.Test PrincipleBlood glucose is measured by an electricalcurrent that is produced when a blood samplemixes with the reagent (special chemicals) of thetest strip. The electrical current changes with theamount of glucose in the blood sample. Prodigy meters measure the strength of the electricalcurrent, calculate your blood glucose leveland then display your result in either mg/dL ormmol/L.Warning: Keep the test strip vial away fromchildren; the vial cap and the test strips canbe a potential choking hazard. Never chew orswallow a test strip. If this occurs, please seekmedical assistance immediately.Owner’s ManualIntroduction to Prodigy Meters16Owner’s Manual17

Theexample describes a way to bring the sampleand the test strip together. Other techniques maywork just as well. Keep experimenting until youfind a technique that consistently works for you.Tip One —Smaller has its AdvantagesBecause the Prodigy AutoCode meter is soeasy to move around, you can experiment withmany different approaches to determine whichworks best for you. Get comfortable holding themeter in one hand while testing. The meter canbe moved towards your finger as easily as yourfinger can be moved to the test strip.Tip Two — Aim for the TipThe tip of the test strip contains an opening to theabsorbent channel in the center where the bloodshould be applied. The absorbent channel drawsFigure 3040Owner’s Manual41

PRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose MeterPRODIGY AutoCode Blood Glucose Meterthe blood into the test strip, much like a straw, when the tip touches the blood sample. Bloodshould be applied only on the very tip. Bloodapplied to the bottom or sides of the test stripmay cause inaccurate readings. It is important thatthe test strip does not bend at all when applyingthe sample.Tip Three — Using a Sideways ApproachW
