Equipment requirementsIn addition to your Studio software, an efficient Studioediting system requires certain levels of hardwareperformance as noted in this section. Remember toothat while specifications are important, they do not tellthe whole story: the proper functioning of hardwaredevices can also depend on manufacturer-supplieddriver software. Checking the maker’s web-site fordriver updates and support information can often behelpful in solving problems with graphics cards, soundcards and other devices.Note: Some features mentioned here require free orpaid “activation” via the Internet, depending on yourversion of Studio.Computer Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon 1.8 GHz or higher xii(2.4 GHz or higher recommended). Intel Core 2 ori7 2.4 GHz required for AVCHD editing (2.66 GHzfor AVCHD 1920)1 GB system memory recommended, 2 GB requiredfor AVCHD editingWindows 7, Windows Vista with SP2, orWindows XP with SP3DirectX 9 or 10 compatible graphics card with 64MB (128 MB or higher recommended); 256 MB forHD and AVCHD editingDirectX 9 or higher compatible sound card3.2 GB of disk space (plug-ins extra)DVD-ROM drive to install software.Pinnacle Studio

The following items are optional: CD-R(W) burner for creating VideoCDs (VCDs) orSuper VideoCDs (SVCDs). DVD-/ R(W) burner for creating DVD, HD DVDand AVCHD discs. Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray discs (StudioUltimate). Sound card with surround-sound output for previewof surround-sound mixes. The hard driveYour hard drive must be capable of sustained readingand writing at 4 MB/sec. Most drives are capable ofthis. The first time you capture, Studio will test yourdrive to make sure it is fast enough. Video in the DVformat occupies 3.6 MB of hard drive space persecond, so just four and a half minutes of DV videowill consume a full gigabyte on the drive.Tip: For capture from video tape, we recommend usinga separate hard drive in order to avoid competitionbetween Studio and other software, includingWindows, for use of the drive during capture.Video capture hardwareStudio can capture video from a variety of digital andanalog sources. Please see “The Import From panel” onpage 20.Video output hardwareStudio can output video to: Any HDV, DV or Digital8 camcorder or VCR. Thisrequires an OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394 (FireWire)Before you startxiii

Output toanalog camcorders or VCRs is also possible using aPinnacle Studio DV or other OHCI-compliant 1394port if your DV or Digital8 camcorder or VCR canpass a DV signal through to its analog outputs (seeyour camcorder manual and Chapter 16: Makingyour movie, for more information).Abbreviations and conventionsThis guide uses the following conventions to helporganize the material.TerminologyAVCHD: A video data format used by some highdefinition camcorders, and for creating DVD discs thatcan be read on Blu-ray players.
