COURSES OVERVIEWSaint Joseph High School provides courses in the academic, honors, and advanced placement level. The tier of classes enables students to proceed at a level commensuratewith their ability and interest in a given academic area.ACADEMIC COURSESSaint Joseph High School provides academic courses that meet the requirements for graduation and prepare students for college.HONOR COURSESThe Saint Joseph High School Honors Program is designed to recognize students who attended Saint Joseph High School for four years and who have successfullyenrolled in the most rigorous Honors and AP curriculum available. There may be no incidents of dishonesty or any major disciplinary incident. The Honors ProgramCommittee meets annually to review the graduating class and to determine eligibility.ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSESSaint Joseph High School participates in the Advanced Placement Program offered by the College Board. Advanced Placement courses afford the students theopportunity to earn college credits for prescribed courses while at Saint Joseph High School. Students enrolled in an Advanced Placement course are required to takethe Advanced Placement Examination. Examination scores will be provided to the students and may be sent to colleges or universities. The college or universityreserves the right to accept the score for college credit. A monetary fee is required and payable upon enrollment. Enrollment is dependent on current grades and atthe discretion of the academic department and the Guidance Department. Advanced Placement Courses receive greater weighting in student’s grade point average.CO-CURRICULAR COURSESCo-curricular courses are an extension of the learning experience, and students may be awarded high school credit. They take place outside of the regular school day.Students interested in participating in these activities for high school credit will need to adhere to attendance and participation policies. The co-curricular courses donot waive any of the requirements for graduation. Students may still participate in these activities without receiving high school credit.DUAL ENROLLMENTSaint Joseph High School participates in Dual Enrollment in conjunction with local colleges and universities. This program recognizes prescribed courses at SaintJoseph High School as equivalent to those offered at the colleges and universities, thereby, granting college credit for successful completion. A monetary fee for thisprogram is required by the colleges or universities. Dual Enrollment courses receive greater weighting in student’s grade point average.COURSES FOR ADVANCEMENTAny course taken to advance a level in any subject during the summer must receive approval from the Dean of Studies and the Department Chair. These credits willnot be included in the student’s transcript or GPA. The course will not count towards the total graduation credit requirement.COLLEGE OPTIONSeniors at Saint Joseph High school may choose to participate in the College Option Program. This program allows students to enroll in elective courses at a localcollege. Participation requires the approval of the Dean of Studies.COURSE PLACEMENT APPEAL PROCESSStudents wishing to appeal a placement decision for a course must meet with the teacher to discuss placement and submit a letter to the academic departmentand Guidance Department. The letter must include the reasons for appeal, qualifications, and interest in course. The letter must be signed by student and parents.Decisions will be determined by the instructor, academic department chair, counselor and Assistant Principal, Dean of Studies. All decisions are final.HONORS PROGRAMThe Saint Joseph High School Honors Program is designed to recognize students who attended Saint Joseph High School for four years and who successfully enroll inthe most rigorous Honors and AP curriculum offered. In addition, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 or higher, no quarter or exam gradelower than a “C”, and no incidents of dishonesty or any major disciplinary incident. Students who meet the requirement of the Honors Program earn a Saint JosephHigh School Honors diploma at graduation.PROGRAM OF STUDIES5

COURSES FORMATIONIntegral to the education provided at Saint Joseph High School is the formation of young men. In addition to course offerings, the school provideseducation beyond the classroom to promote self-growth, healthy attitudes, and responsible behavior. The goal is to assist students to realize theirpotential and provide them with skills necessary to pursue continued studies.GUIDANCE DEPARTMENTThe Guidance Department consists of a team of counselors whose goal is to provide students with individual direction as they transition from middleschool, navigate through high school, and prepare for college. Counselors assist students with course selection, study skills, time management, andstandardized testing. They prepare students for college by providing opportunities to explore careers and by providing information on the college searchprocess, the application process, information on military services, and financial aid. ACADEMIC AREAS COMPUTER SCIENCE AND APPLIED TECHNOLOGYThe Computer Science & Applied Technology Department offers several courses that prepare students for college work and for technology use in their personal andprofessional lives. Courses range from word processing and spreadsheet applications to computer graphics and design as well as studies in various coding languages.In addition, the department sponsors a FIRST Robotics Challenge team that participates in local and national contests. Students may also qualify for the NationalTechnological Honor Society.Computer Animation - 03602.5 credits, semesterGrade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12Prerequisite: noneThis course introduces students to the basics of computer animations, including animations scripting and layout, creating cell animations, and Web graphics.Students gain experience in making a script by manipulating graphics to create an animation sequence using key-framing and onion skinning techniques. Studentslearn to manipulate images by changing the size, direction and shape of their image, and they will learn to download animations onto the Web.Computer Science I: Java - 01492.5 credits, semesterGrade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12Prerequisite: NoneStudents will be introduced to computer programming through the object-oriented language called Java. They will learn about data types, control statements,iteration, and user-defined methods. Students will learn to create artwork with afocus on the design elements and principles of art and will develop their personal creativity through problem solving and individual interpretation. Students willalso learn to extend the concepts of these programs through the function of motion features in Photoshop, which they will use to create short movie clips, withadvanced work produced in Adobe Premiere. As a final project, students are required to create a movie clip about a historic or scientific topic that they will designfrom inception to conclusion, including graphics that they create in Illustrator, photos that they edit and amalgamate in Photoshop, text that they compose, andsound track music that they include.PROGRAM OF STUDIES7

Human/computer interaction emphasizesthe major components of the computer, effective searching, social media, and email etiquette. Problem solving teaches design, code programming, testing, andverification skills. Programming includes using Scratch to build data structures. Students who enroll in this course will develop the foundation to advance in webdesign, graphics, coding, and animation. Access to a video camera is highly suggested. Sports broadcasting students will be trained in the various aspects of live online radioand video streams for sporting events. Flexibility with the schedule is required as students will need to take turns broadcasting, producing, filming, and spottingfor games during each athletic season. Photography/videography/TV/radio production is open to all grade levels. Sports broadcasting is open to junior or seniorstudents. Co-curricular courses are an extension of the learning experience, and students may be awarded high school credit. These courses take place outside of theregular school day.
