Black Lives MatterReading/Watch List - KS3Right now, our whole world has come together to mourn the tragic death of GeorgeFloyd and so many other black citizens who have been killed unfairly due topolice brutality. The truth is, racism is still alive, not just in America butall over the world. All of our social media feeds have been taken over with#blacklivesmatter and videos, pictures and other content which show how thisdevastating issue is still causing unbelievable pain and grief to people acrossthe globe. It is down to each and every individual to be educated on the history of racism, and what racism is like in the 21st century. This is the only way we’ll ever beable to make a change - through the power of knowledge. However, because the use of social media is so widespread and unregulated thereis lots of disinformation (fake news) being spread. It is hard to properly learnabout such a complicated issue through tweets that are only 280 characters long,or one instagram post!I have created a list of books, articles, podcasts, films and TV shows whichdiscuss a number of issues. I know this is a long document but it’s because Iwant to give you a range of content and something that will please everyone, asnot everyone is into reading!Topics: Police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement The lives of young black people Racism in the UK and US Immigration/Being a refugee

NOT MY BUSINESS by Niyi OsundareThey picked Akanni up one morningBeat him soft like clayAnd stuffed him down the bellyOf a waiting jeep. What business of mine is itSo long they don’t take the yamFrom my savouring mouth? They came one nightBooted the whole house awakeAnd dragged Danladi out,Then off to a lengthy absence. What business of mine is itSo long they don’t take the yamFrom my savouring mouth?Chinwe went to work one dayOnly to find her job was gone:No query, no warning, no probe –Just one neat sack for a stainless record. What business of mine is itSo long they don’t take the yamFrom my savouring mouth? And then one eveningAs I sat down to eat my yamA knock on the door froze my hungry hand. The jeep was waiting on my bewildered lawnWaiting, waiting in its usual silence.

The Race Industry by Benjamin ZephaniahThe coconuts have got the jobs. The race industry is a growth industry. We despairing, they careering. We want more peace they want more police. The Uncle Toms are getting paid. The race industry is a growth industry. We say sisters and brothers don’t fear. They will do anything for the Mayor. The coconuts have got the jobs. The race industry is a growth industry. They’re looking for victims and poets to rent. They represent me without my consent. The Uncle Toms are getting paid. The race industry is a growth industry. In suits they dither in fear of anarchy. They take our sufferings and earn a salary.Steal our souls and make their documentaries.Inform daily on our community.Without Black suffering they’d have no jobs.Without our dead they’d have no office.Without our tears they’d have no drink. If they stopped sucking we could get justice. The coconuts are getting paid.Men, women and Brixton are being betrayed.
