2The Role of Stake Leaders andthe Partnership with BSALearning Objectives:1. Understand the Scouting organization and its value to the Church.2. Understand the need for quality Scouting programs and their potential for real growth.3. Identify the relationship roles of stake leaders in Scouting.Active LearningReview the BSA Organization and Scouting in the Church BSA structure: national, region, area, council, district, and unit. Why did the Church adopt Scouting as an activity program for Primary boys andAaronic Priesthood young men? What do the programs of Scouting provide for adults? (Youth Protection Training, other training, Tour and Activity Plan, and liability coverage.)LDS-BSA Relationships in the Stake and BSA How can you strengthen the relationship with BSA and the Church? Review Scouting Handbook, 2.4 and 3.1, on page 38; see also page 50. Identify possible committee assignments and functions (such as membership, training, Friends of Scouting, advancement, rechartering, safety, and so on). How can you effectively oversee the Aaronic Priesthood and Scouting?Review pages 46–47.Define a Quality Scouting Program That Supports the Priesthood 4What are the results of an effective Scouting program? How can advisors influence the Scouting program?Ponder the words identify, invite, and include. 3Aaronic Priesthood ActivitiesLearning Objectives:1. Gain a vision of the purpose of activities.2. Become familiar with the needs, interests, and characteristics of young men so you canplan better activities.3. Learn about the vital role of reflections and sharing in linking activities with gospel knowledge.Active LearningIntroduction: Think about the principal objective of this conference: strengthen the AaronicPriesthood. Consider these questions as you move through this session: What role do activities play in strengthening the Aaronic Priesthood and achieving real growth? What key roles do stake and ward shepherds play in achieving real growth and engaging young men in fulfilling their duty to God?Quiz Yourselves What primary factors should quorum presidencies and advisers consider in selectingand planning activities for young men? (See Handbook 2, 8.13.) How do quorum presidencies and advisers determine the kinds of activities that shouldbe planned? (See Handbook 2, 13.2.1.) For whom are activities planned? Think about real growth and how it is achieved (seeHandbook 2, 13.2.3). Who is responsible for planning activities? (See Handbook 2, 8.13.) What are the benefits of planning a yearly calendar? (See Handbook 2, 13.2.6.)Play the Game: Deacon, Teacher, or Priest: What struck you as you played the game?Watch This Hands-On Activity and Then Reflect: The Puzzle: What made this demonstrationso powerful?Pair Share about Reflections What are reflections? Why are they so important?Review Reflection Ground Rules6 No put-downs. Every response is welcome and valid.

Show positive appreciation for input. Ask open-ended questions like these: What did we learn about ourselves from this activity? What spiritual connections can we make to the activity?Look at the Youth Activities Website Look at “Plan with a Purpose” on the Church Youth Activities website (lds.org/youth/activities). Consider these concepts: asking questions, counseling together, and planning based onneeds and interests.Act (Ponder, Plan, Perform)What are your current spiritual impressions about these questions: How well are the activities in your stake and wards strengthening the Aaronic Priesthood? How well are the activities in your stake and wards contributing to real growth?Who is strengthening the shepherds in your stake and wards? What other spiritual impressions have you had? What are obstacles to planning high-quality activities, and how will you address them?ShareShare your impressions, feelings, and potential plans with others.Resources:A. 4Strengthening Aaronic PriesthoodHolders through QuorumsLearning Objectives:1. Review the importance of regular bishopric interviews.2. Consider why it is important that Aaronic Priesthood quorum presidencies regularly holdand conduct quorum presidency meetings.3. Learn the importance and key elements of a quorum meeting.4. Identify ways to strengthen Aaronic Priesthood holders through quorums.Active LearningIntroduction: Think about the principal objective of this conference: strengthen the AaronicPriesthood. Then consider this question as you move through this session: At the completion of their Aaronic Priesthood years, will the young men in your stakebe ready for Melchizedek Priesthood ordination, temple ordinances, missionaryservice, and continued service to God and others?View Video: Brother Tad R. Callister Pair Share: What would you like the young men to have learned and experienced bythe time they have completed their Aaronic Priesthood years?Bishopric Interviews A member of the bishopric interviews the deacons and teachers quorum presidentsand the priests quorum assistants regularly. These interviews help leaders identify theprogress of each member of the quorum and the quorum as a whole (see page 48;Handbook 2, 8.3.1).Quorum Presidency MeetingsConsider these questions as you view the video “Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Presidency Meeting”: What is the role of advisers and bishopric members? Were priesthood keys being exercised? What valuable lessons and experiences were apparent during the presidency meeting? Can you duplicate this experience in your stake? Will this work using smaller quorums?Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Meetings8Consider these questions as you view the video “Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Meeting”: Does the use of an agenda make a difference to the meeting? In what ways were these young men preparing for their future roles as missionaries, husbands, and fathers?

Act (Ponder, Plan, Perform)Consider these questions as impressions come: Are your young men fulfilling the purposes of the Aaronic Priesthood? Are the quorums in your stake led by advisers or young men? Do your advisers and bishopric members understand their roles? How will they learn? What can you do to strengthen them? What plans are you considering? Can you envision reaching them? Can you overcomeapparent obstacles?ShareShare your impressions and feelings with others. Share some of the plans you are considering.Resources:A. Video: Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Meetings (philmont.lds.org)B. Video: Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Presidency Meeting (philmont.lds.org)C. 5Fulfilling My Duty to GodLearning Objectives:1. Review how the Duty to God resource can help young men understand and fulfill priesthood duties, become more converted, and gain spiritual strength.2. Recognize that Duty to God provides many relationship opportunities for shepherds.3. Identify ways to significantly improve implementation of Duty to God in homes, quorums, wards, and the stake.Active LearningHow well do you understand the Duty to God resource and its purpose? Ponder the following: When a young man turns 18, what do you want him to know? What characteristics do you want him to have? Who do you want him to be? Be prepared to share your thoughts. Learn the development sections of Duty to God. Share what a young man would know, what characteristics he would have, and who he would be if he excelled in each area. Duty to God was created with the intent that young men would recognize that their priesthood duties are never “done.” Discuss the importance of the “Learn, Act, Share” modeland how using it will help them become better fathers, husbands, and missionaries. How does Duty to God strengthen shepherding relationships? Think about the people who were shepherds in your life. What did they do? Search the Deacon, Teacher, or Priest sections of Dutyto God, and look for opportunities for “shepherdingmoments.” Discuss ways to shepherd while learning, acting, and sharing. Duty to God invites a young man to share and interactwith his family over 60 times. When implemented, how does this affect his relationship with his family? Part of shepherding with Duty to God is for the shepherd to have an understanding of the program andlove for each young man. How does this happen?10

How can you help get Duty to God fully implemented? In small groups, share successful implementation practices you have seen or wouldlike to implement. Share these practices with the entire group. Discuss ways to integrate Duty to God in other Church functions.1. How can a home teacher help?2. How can Duty to God and Come, Follow Me work together?3. How can the Relief Society help implement Duty to God?Act (Ponder, Plan, Perform)Write promptings you received and your plans to implement Duty to God more fully. Includewhat you will do to inspire others to join young men on their journey and to train and provideongoing support to stake leadership, bishoprics, quorum presidencies, Young Men presidencies, and advisers. Implement your plan.ShareRegularly share with others your thoughts, ideas, plans, actions, special experiences, successes, and lessons learned. This allows plans and actions to be improved, enhanced, and“re-shared” to improve performance and outcomes.Resources:A. Video: My Duty to God (philmont.lds.org)B.
